It's no secret that people were curious what the Broncos -- or, more specifically, John Elway and John Fox -- plan to do with Tim Tebow going forward. We mentioned the Denver problem in Sorting the Sunday Pile and early word out of Denver is that Tebow will be the starter in 2012.

Divisional Round Recap

Elway said so himself on Monday, and also added that he wants to work closely -- and personally -- with Tebow to improve during the offseason.

"Tim has earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp next year," Elway said at his press conference Monday. "He made some good strides."

We mentioned this on the podcast: the Broncos are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place with their quarterback situation. They might not love Tebow and his "pure passing skills" (or whatever), but he led them to a division title in 2011.

Plus, there are no real viable options for Denver to upgrade. Look at the list that's Ryan Wilson put together, and tell us who exactly the Broncos are going to get to come to Denver who is a better option than Tebow. But because they currently only have two quarterbacks under contract, they will be shopping for another one in the offseason.

"Right now we've got two quarterbacks under contract," Elway said. "We have to obviously be in the market to find some more quarterbacks in free agency or the draft."

They certainly need to sign a veteran, but one of the best options out there (Brady Quinn -- no, really) was already Tebow's backup in 2011. And what veteran is going to want to come to Denver and have to compete with Tebow? Did you even see the Broncos fans last year? They're insane.

Drafting a quarterback isn't out of the question, but it's unlikely that there'll be anyone worth taking out there when Denver makes its first-round pick. It's just a terrible market to need a quarterback if you're sitting in Denver's spot.

So they did the smart thing and put all their support behind Tebow right now, minimizing the questions that will be asked over the next several months. Next up? Try to develop him as much as possible.

"There are things that I can add," Elway said. "Where I can help him ... I'm looking forward to it."

Elway: Tebow 'earned the right' to start in 2012

Phillypower: Elway is one tough guy. He will see Tebow and the Broncos through whatever transitions come. What I don't get are some people who trash Elway and question his career, his integrity and his knowledge of the game.

Tebow's a winner
Really? What has he won?  Seriously.

Fewer than 10 NFL games in two years?  Fewer NFL games than rookie qb Andy Dalton?

In his two years with the Broncos they haven't had a winning season.

As a Gator he doesn't have more SEC championships than Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerffel, Terry Dean, Rex Grossman, Jessie Palmer or Chris Leak.

And he won the same number of national championships as Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Greg McElroy and JaMarcus Russell.

Are all these guys "winners? too?

Lilpig: I remember when Palmer ran a 4.7 40 and had great feet. Then came the beatings at USC and Cin. Let's trust Tebow doesn't go through the same.

Elway: Tebow 'earned the right' to start in 2012

is that how you judge someone by 1 year of experience?

yes, when they only complete 40% of their passes and struggle to throw for 150 yards. Let's not be crazy here, seems like half are saying he is a superbowl caliber QB and the other half saying he is crap. he is in the lower 5 of of starting QBs but maybe not the worst. he is definitly not a top 20, sorry, and for that alone I think you need to try to get better at that position.

I went back 5 years and could not find one QB that started more than three games that had a completion percent as low as tebow. I bet I could have gone 10 or even 20. bottom line is that even if you are going to say he is not horrible, you can not say he is good. Denver should be looking to improve at that position.

Fair enough johnofsd, It was a little dig at Palmer and although Tebow hasn't come close to Palmer's achievments, Tebow does hold some good and bad, some strange, odd, unusual, yet impressive statistics so far in his brief career.

Tebow will be entering his third year in the league.  My guess is that the improvement you saw this year was his big leap.

I don't get the love for Tim Tebow. He can only play in the "option" style offense. Patriots give up almost 300 yards a game yet Tebow can't get 150 yards and threw for the 4th worst completion percent in 30 years in the playoffs. Why? Because the Patriots wouldn't allow Tebow to run the option successfully and he was forced to stay in the pocket and he's not good in the pocket. At Florida he was only good in the "option" offense. The fact is, his whole career has been built around the "option" offense. The Broncos changed their offense to the "option" is what helped Tebow win.

And that said he still only managed back-up QB style numbers. He's gonna have to learn how to throw a tight spiral so his receivers can catch the ball and he's gonna have to learn how to throw from the pocket. Because teams are gonna start making him throw from the pocket after seeing what the Patriots did.

Yet even though he's only a one dimentional QB and only puts up backup QB style numbers some people still think he's gonna be a superstar. His wins were because the defense kept the game close and because the running game was good enough to help him have the space to run the option. Hell any QB can put together a winning streak for their team. Dolphins backup QB did and even put up better numbers and could throw out of the pocket. But people want to give Tebow all the credit for these close wins that wouldn't of happened if the defense didn't keep the game close and they didn't have any run game.

People just need to understand eventually one dimentional players get figured out. And if you can't learn another dimention, you end up known as a would've, could've, should've.

Elway: Tebow 'earned the right' to start in 2012

Elway should stay true to his convictions and cut ties with Tebow.  Tebow is a very competitive player who wins with a strong belief in himself and god but I dont think that he will ever be the type of player you can build around.  He is too eratic and inacurrate to the point where it is difficult to practice with him.  All championship teams practice the way they play on game day.  It is impossible to become a well oiled machine with Tebow at the helm.

I also wonder how dedicated he is to improving on the field and helping to make his team better.  All of the great quarterbacks are devoted to the sport and study every chance they get in order to gain a competitive edge.  Football is not that important to Tebow.  It's impossible to devote the amount of time you need to get better at your craft while spending so much time out in the ministry praising god and trying to make a difference in the world.  Im definately not knocking him for his beliefs but I am looking at the big picture as it relates to trying to build a championship caliber team.  I dont think you can do that with Tebow.

Elway: Tebow 'earned the right' to start in 2012

Tebow's a winner.  And his passing will improve.  The greatest improvement a new QB in the NFL shows is usually between his first and second years as a starter.  It takes time to get up to the tempo of a new playing level.  I predict great things for Tebow in the NFL.

Elway didn't always throw the most pretty pass either. Tebow will benefit a lot from Elways mentoring. Tebow will never be Brady but he can be a better than average QB.
