On Sunday night we passed along a report that the Rams were offering Brian Schottenheimer their offensive coordinator position and also mentioned the likelihood of Gregg Williams leaving the Saints to join Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. Though there's been no confirmation of the former news, the latter appears to have happened, as Williams reportedly will join Fisher with the Rams.

Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports that Williams, who's contract was up in New Orleans, is leaving the Saints to complete the Titans reunion.

Williams worked with Fisher in Tennessee from 1997 through 2000 before leaving to take the Bills head-coaching gig. In his final season with the Titans, his defense was the top-ranked unit in the NFL. After leaving Buffalo, Williams worked with the Redskins and Jaguars before helping lead the Saints to a takeaway-fueled championship defense and a Super Bowl victory.

His last two years haven't been as impressive, however, and he was potentially headed to an awkward contract situation until Fisher took the job in St. Louis.

Williams will take on a pretty big task, as the Rams were 26th in the NFL in points allowed and 22nd in yards allowed. The Rams also ranked 23rd in interceptions but were decent at sacking opponents.

Anybody else find it funny that they are picking up the 2 coaches they faced when the Rams won their last Super Bowl?

We just put up 36 on Greg William's defense. I can't say I'm worried about this hire.

Report: Gregg Williams leaves Saints for Rams

I'm not a Saints or 49er fan. I watched the game for the pure fun of watching a great offense against a very strong defense. The offense overcame 5 turnovers to stay in the game. All the defense had to do was slow down the offense- not even stop them but hold a team with the M.O. of settling for field goals to field goals and they couldn't do it. This game was about the 9er O and the Saints D. Roman Harper is great on the blitz but can cover deep. Can anyone tell me why they weren't bumping the WRs at the line and doubling Davis with a LB underneath and Safety over the top on the last drive? Everyone in the room i was watching with knew Davis was going to be the main target on the last drive. Why didn't Williams know that? Just to be transparent, there were no NFL defensive coordinators at my house on Sunday so it obviously didn't take a defensive genius to see this. Great TE and mediocre WRs- who do you double.

Good hire by the Rams.  I could see the Rams gettting some good players in the draft and turning this defense around just like the Texans did by hiring Wade Phillips last year.  They already have some decent talent on that defense and some high picks in this year's draft.  I could really see this defense being good next year and the Rams being a surprise team.

Report: Gregg Williams leaves Saints for Rams

Rebel41, I am a disgruntled Saints Fan, and it stems from Gregg Williams' refusal to play smart, to recognize that there is a time and place for blitzing and not blitzing, and to realize the shortcomings of your defenders.  The Saints were leading that game by 3 with 40 seconds left and SF at their own 33.  This was a miracle considering 5 turnovers, and it took so much energy to be in that position.  Sf had 1 timeout left.  Make them complete passes in the middle of the field, make a tackle or 2, and the games ends.  WORST case scenario for Saints should have been an Akers long field goal attempt to secure overtime.  Williams refuses to acknowledge that Malcom Jenkins could not cover Vernon Davis and that Roman Harper couldn't cover Oprah Winfrey if she was out ther.  Don't blitz and let the game go after the Heart that the whole team (defense included for 56 minutes) poured into grabbing the lead with no time left.  He is too arrogant and egotistical... His way or the Highway... Well, the Best team lost Saturday to a team that out-played the Saints that day.  Problem is, the Saints overcame all of their mistakes, and Williams defensive calls exposed the inability by the secondary, and the rest is history.  I hope St, Louis enjoys Williams.  His m.o. always works at first, and then the units fizzle.  Check the stats... Washington, Buffalo, wherever... same pattern because he won't adjust.  A good defense is an unpredictable one that makes plays.  The Saints were as predictable as it gets this year.  WHO DAT!!

OMG !!!  The pathetic and the predictable !!!  Sorry Rams fans but I thought Fisher would be a great hire. So far he turned around and hired one of the WORST offensive coordinators out there who only got his job based on Daddy's name. Then he takes the guy that coached the weakest part of the Saints. When Alex Smith and company slap 30+ points on your defense and produce a game winning drive like he did against your defense time to hang it up. I am sure he would of been canned if he did not leave, what a shame the way that offense played to get zero support from the defense.
Another poster mentioned missed tackles etc but I will say what about the over all scheme? It was terrible. The only guy catching the ball was Davis so fix your coverages !!!
I have to say I am not sure my Jets have done any better hiring "Flintstone", I honestly would of kept Mr. Predictable instead, atleast he has experience as an "OC" even though he is pretty bad.

Great hire for the RAMS. These two powered a Great defense in Tenn. Now the Rams can turn it around. Seems like Saint Fans posting here thinking Williams missed tackles and played with no heart. But they are wrong. Its the Saints players that are a soft defense and that is why they are out of the Playoffs

Thank God this arrogant idiot is gone!!  Too bad for the Rams... Suddenly, no defensive back will be able to catch, defenders will forget their assignments in week 16 or later, and the Rams poor offensive will have to score 35 every game just to have a shot.
