Raiders to interview at least 4, including Tice

TiceBy Josh Katzowitz

While Winston Moss seems to be the favorite to win the Raiders head coaching job because of the Packers assistant head coach’s connection with new Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie, the organization is interviewing at least four other candidates for the job.

As the Chicago Tribune reports, the Raiders have asked permission from the Bears to interview new offensive coordinator Mike Tice, and although Chicago just promoted Tice to replace Mike Martz, the team can’t stand in Tice’s way*.

Along with Tice, the Raiders will interview Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, according to Delawareonline.com. Also, the Raiders will take a look at Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and Denver defensive coordinator Bruce Allen (hey, if you’re going to fly to Denver anyway, you might as well get two interviews with one stone).

“I think it’s very complimentary to this organization that they’re having that opportunity and to their work,’’ Broncos coach John Fox told the Associated Press. “I think any assistant coach’s aspiration is to be a head coach. It speaks for what this organization has accomplished this season. Time will tell.’’

Latest coaching moves
*This became an issue earlier this week when the Bears refused the Vikings request to interview Chicago secondary coach Jon Hoke for for the Minnesota defensive coordinator job.

Already, the Raiders have interviewed Miami interim coach Todd Bowles.

Moss most likely will receive a call as well. He played for the Raiders in the 1990s, and McKenzie, formerly an executive in Green Bay, and Moss know each other quite well.

“There’s always opportunities to put yourself in the same position as a head coach would and see how you would do things or what you would change or what you would add or what you would take away,’’ Moss said. “So with that being said, I’ve done that, I feel good about the vision, the goals, the beliefs that can be instilled within an organization that would give me the opportunity to be a head coach.’’

Why fire Hue and then even interview as "has been, retread" like Mike Tice?  To come in and clean house means a complete change in the atmosphere in Alameda.  I'm talking about proven leadership like Gruden, Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Coordinators from the Packers or Patriots, etc.

Mike Tice as the HC of the Raiders would put this organization right back where it has languished for a decade, in the toilet of mediocrity.  What the team needs is a leader who emphasizes discipline and consistency and can help lead this team in those areas.  After the debacles in MIN, does anyone really think Tice is that guy?!  They don't need some rising star wunderkind, or some failed NFL HC, or some OC/DC from a team with a spotty record.  They need to commit and woo one of the premier OC/DCs on a team that is doing it right.  How about the OC in GB or NO or even PHI?  Better yet, how about the DC from PIT, HOU or BAL?  All of those organizations (well maybe not PHI) are solid programs that show solid fundimentals in focus and disciple and implementation of a system.  If Oakland  is going to clean house and install a new GM and HC, they need to make sure they plug in a HC who has experience running an NFL operation, and who has a demonstrated record of running a focused/disciplined system.
I know it'd be next to impossible for them to lure Cower in or Gruden back, but grabbing a top coordinator should be their primary focus here, not interviewing guys who were horrible HCs and coordinators on teams that aren't much better disciplined than the Raiders themselves...

What coach would rationally want this job, except for the fact that it carries a head coach's paycheck? Okay, there is some talent there. But the Oakland Raiders corporate culture is just weird. Front office and on the field. The "outlaw" thing flew in the 60s and 70s. Not today. Not for a long time.

I wholeheartedly agree.  Definitely a good Tight-End, OL Line and serviceable offensive mind but definitely don't hand Tice the reign's to be a Head Coach.

I don't think Tice deserves another head coaching gig.  This list is a little scary, makes me think Al is still leading the coaching search.  Personally I would like to see a head coach with a defensive background since that is where we need the most help.  No retreads.

Tice destroyed Minnesota. Avoid this guy in any leadership role.

As a Bears fan, I want Tice to stay.  He was moderately successful with the worst talent on the offensive line the last 2 years.  I want to see what he can do.  When he was head coach of the Vikings, they were always near the top in offensive rankings.  Get a #1 receiver and a left tackle and this is a different team.

Hiring Marty Mornhinweg is the dumbest move any team can make. The guy is not head coaching material. There is also some debate as to whether he is a good offensive coordinator since Andy Reid calls about 95% of the plays.

i think the raiders whould hire todd haley so they can win 2 games. just kidding. now that what's his name is gone, maybe the raiders can hire someone decent and have some stability. the raiders have some talent, but they need  tomake some moves that make football sense. moore and more the teams that win dont just go for speed and atheletic ability.hart, not getting hurt, being good in the loker roon, and guts in the fourth quarter is what is winning games.
