Bears say Forte can play in Pro Bowl; should he?

ForteBy Josh Katzowitz

OK, see if this makes sense.

Bears running back Matt Forte was placed on injured reserve this season after injuring his knee on Dec. 3, and already obviously displeased with the way Chicago hadn’t given him the contract extension he so dearly wanted, he said he wouldn’t return to play unless he was 100 percent.

“I'm not going to rush to get back on the field and play while I'm hurt, because (if) you're not at 100 percent you may injure it even more if you do that,” Forte said then.

Right, that’s fine. Smart even. If the Bears won’t pay him what he feels he deserves, there’s no sense in Forte possibly hurting himself again if he’s not completely healthy.

But Thursday the Bears announced Forte had passed his physical and had cleared him to play in the Pro Bowl. It sounds like that’s exactly what Forte will do.

And all I can think is: why? Why would he risk getting injured again as he moves into free agency?  Yeah, the Bears very well could place the franchise tag on him, but I’m betting they won’t if he tears his ACL during the game (hey, Robert Edwards effectively ended his career during that week of celebration).

Is he, as one Twitter follower suggested, simply flipping the bird to the Bears? If that’s the case, it seems like an awfully big risk for a few minutes of pleasure. Not sure I understand.

Get out there Matt! Play in the Pro Bowl and take the chance of never seeing that big contract. All the teams know what you can do on the field. Good Luck!

Right, I'm just saying crazy things can happen. And why put yourself in a position that increases the risk? -Katzowitz

I don't consider Cutler consistent enough to be considered an elite QB, so I'd classify him as a mediocre one
I really have to agree with you here. Let me say that I am neither a Chicago Bears fan, or necessarily a Cutler fan. But i have to say that he might not be entirely consistant, but i am consistantly amazed at the fact that this guy has as much sucess as he has had in Chicago. His o-line is horrible. This man has about 2 and a half seconds after he gets the ball before he is running for his life behind that line. Combine that with the fact that the Bears dont seem interested in providing him with a true #1 WR. That is unless the acquiring of an aging, under-achieving Roy Williams is considered the solution, I think this team should go after Vincent Jackson with a vengence. He would command double-teams, and free up the speedy wr's they have with Hester, and Johnny Knox (if his back heals up) Then they should concentrate their draft on the best O-line prospects out there. Give Cutler the time in the Pocket that Brady has, and Cutler will carve up defenses.

Sit your ass down somewhere Forte, your doing to much!  Re-aggravate that injury and watch that contract extension go bye-bye...don't be stupid dude, go on Vacation and relax.

I agree he shouldn't play. Not in his current situation.

Unless he has already been franchised what do the Bears have to do with his decision? I would show up and do the events but playing is a risk I would not recommend he take.  You cant get paid if you cant play.

I think he's doing it to try and get a bigger payday, and also to show that he's not injured anymore.

As for the RB argument, that depends entirely on who your QB is. If you have a good QB sure it doesn't matter who your RB is. But if your QB is mediocre or worse, you are better off with a stud RB. I don't consider Cutler consistent enough to be considered an elite QB, so I'd classify him as a mediocre one.

Great running back, who deserves a nice pay day.  I would not play in the glorified exhibition game (Pro Bowl) and risk additional injury.

RBs are low on the NFL food chain.   Forte will get tagged and end up with a very nice 7-8 million dollar contract.  As you see what happened to AP and even Forte last season teams are much better off going year to year with RBS.
