Spags will join Payton in New Orleans for 2012. (US Presswire)

By Ryan Wilson

Earlier this week, Gregg Williams, the Saints' defensive coordinator for the previous three seasons, took the same job in St. Louis to work for his old boss in Tennesse, newly named Rams head coach Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. There had been speculation before New Orleans' season ended in San Francisco last Saturday that Williams might choose to follow Fisher so it wasn't surprising when it eventually happened.

Williams was reportedly torn about leaving the Saints but the defense, which struggled against the run in 2011, could be better in 2012: CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Larry Holder confirms through a league source that New Orleans has hired Steve Spagnuolo who, up until two and a half weeks ago, was the Rams head coach. He landed that gig after serving capably as the Giants' defensive coordinator in 2007-2008, which includes shutting down the 2007 Patriots, one of the most high-powered offenses in NFL history, in Super Bowl XLII.  He was fired from St. Louis after sandwiching a 7-9 season around one- and two-win seasons.

Now he'll join Sean Payton's staff. And unlike St. Louis, where injuries and lack of talent meant that the Rams had to hold opponents to fewer than 10 points to have a chance to win, Spags will lead a defense whose best weapon isn't named Vilma or Smith or Ellis, but some guy named Drew Brees. And he's good for at least 35 points every time he steps on the field.

I had a feeling this would be the move. Us "Who Dats" were happy with giving up a billion yards a game as long as we got turnovers but that hasnt happnd since the SB. Its time for a change & Spags is definitly someone who can turn this ship around. Being from Jersey i am very familier with what Spags did with the Giants, lets hope it translates in the WDN. We need to get better in all positions on D. Harper & Jenkins cant cut it as cover Safteys. It makes me sick that Vernon Davis got that catch, we could not step up when we needed it. We go into SF vs 1 of the best D's in the league & score 32, our D gave up 36 to a mediocre Offense, that cant happen. Thanks for 2009 Greg, but see ya later. Welcome to the Nation Spags. Lets get it done!!

SPAGS IS O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D ANYHOW. MAYBE THE EAGLES CAN GET  JACK DEL RIO? HE COULD CERTAINLY TEACH THEIR LB CORE. BETTER SUITED AS A D-COORDINATOR THAN A HEAD COACH, THAT'S FOR SURE
Eric l lewis, I can tell you're one of those classic Iggles homers. You coveted Spags as your new DC and when he chose the Saints over your team, you posted this transparent little backlash because it hurt your feelings.

Spags  is the man and will turn that D around Gregg Williams is a fraud and so overrated. Kind of scary with him on the defensive side with that high powerd offense. GOOD luck to spags we miss you have a feeling osi's a saint next year

vik19-
Steve was not a great Head coach.  He is a great defensive coordinator and that is what he should do!
Agreed and love the hiring of Spags.

Why would Spags want the eagles job (REALLY WHY) I think his chances of going to another superbowl are far greater with NO.
