Spags will join Payton in New Orleans for 2012. (US Presswire)

By Ryan Wilson

Earlier this week, Gregg Williams, the Saints' defensive coordinator for the previous three seasons, took the same job in St. Louis to work for his old boss in Tennesse, newly named Rams head coach Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. There had been speculation before New Orleans' season ended in San Francisco last Saturday that Williams might choose to follow Fisher so it wasn't surprising when it eventually happened.

Williams was reportedly torn about leaving the Saints but the defense, which struggled against the run in 2011, could be better in 2012: Rapid Reporter Larry Holder confirms through a league source that New Orleans has hired Steve Spagnuolo who, up until two and a half weeks ago, was the Rams head coach. He landed that gig after serving capably as the Giants' defensive coordinator in 2007-2008, which includes shutting down the 2007 Patriots, one of the most high-powered offenses in NFL history, in Super Bowl XLII.  He was fired from St. Louis after sandwiching a 7-9 season around one- and two-win seasons.

Now he'll join Sean Payton's staff. And unlike St. Louis, where injuries and lack of talent meant that the Rams had to hold opponents to fewer than 10 points to have a chance to win, Spags will lead a defense whose best weapon isn't named Vilma or Smith or Ellis, but some guy named Drew Brees. And he's good for at least 35 points every time he steps on the field.

This guy has only been a DC in the NFL 1 year, he can not in anyway be compared to Wade!

Hard to think of a better acquisition the Saints could have made in or out of a jersey for next season. I do wonder about the pieces Spagnuolo has to work with, especially considering he'd probably want to remake the Saints D leaning on varied blitz packages as learned from the late great Jim Johnson. It might take Spags two or three years of solid drafts and a defensive playbook rebuild to get him where he needs to be, but I don't think the Saints' offense is going downhill any time soon.

I agree with other posters that a head coach job is probably not Spags' strong suit, which is not a knock against him. It just doesn't seem like he's comfortable with that side of the ball. The Saints would do well to be patient with him and not expect immediate results.

IMO - the Saints defense just got better.  Greg Williams has established himself as a top flight coach with several teams already.  But Spags is much younger, fresher, and I think, more innovative.  Williams is a bit predictable.  That's part of the reason the 49ers beat him, and why the Patriots always beat him.  That said, the Rams need overhauling from Top to Bottom.  So maybe this is a win-win.  Except for the Eagles.  I was sure Spagnuolo was going back.  Wow.  The non-Eagles thing is the biggest part of this story.  Philly had a choice of Spags or Juan Castillo and chose Castillo?  Really??  I guess the front office of a certain NFC East team still thinks they are the "Dream Team".  Philly missed an opportunity.

I thought Williams might have waited to see if any HC jobs were floated his way.  True the Bills thing didn't work out.  But - Bills?  Sorry Buff fans, but there were just so many needs there at the time.

great hire for NO.. there is no way spags D can be any worse than williams which would mean a trip to at least the NFC championship... guess only time will tell but on the surface looks like a major improvement

If the Saints' defense catches on, the rest of the league is in trouble.

Spags is like Wade Phillips, not a gread head coach, but as a defensive coordinator, he is top notch. New Orleans did really well with this hire. Take it from a Giants fan, I know. I was hoping to get him back if the Giants defense did not pick up like it did the end of year.

Report: Steve Spagnuolo joins Saints staff

Don't jump for joy just yet. He also runs a blitz heavy 4-3. He's probably not as bad as Williams, but Spags needs to get this team back to fundamental football before they even crack a playbook.
