Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Las Vegas and's NFL experts may not give the Ravens much of a chance against the Patriots in the AFC Championship game but not everyone is sold on New England. Take unbiased observer, former Ravens defensive coordinator, and current Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who appeared on WFAN Friday to make his bold prediction.

“First off, the Ravens are going to win this game,” he told Mike Francesa. "But the truth is this. The only way you’re going to beat New England is if you have a great defense. And when you look at the teams that won – obviously Buffalo was the one exception – the Giants had a great game defensively, they were able to get pressure on the quarterback, make plays in the back end. The Ravens had beaten New England before with a dominant defense."

Seems reasonable enough, especially Ryan's implication that the Jets, who finished the season 8-8 and missed the playoffs, didn't have a great defense (they went 0-2 against the Patriots in 2011). And he alluded to that during his conversation with Francesa.

"We beat New England three times but we did it creatively … a different type of defense, (Tom Brady) wasn’t comfortable," Ryan said. "There are only a few teams…Pittsburgh, was more physical than New England. That’s why they won. So the Ravens, in my opinion, are going to take a similar approach to how the Giants played them. Meaning, they’re going to rush four guys on them, I truly think they’re going to rush four. I think Terrell Suggs might be the difference in this game. I don’t know how many guys can block Terrell Suggs. I’ve got the answer: none of them. So I think Suggs is going to be huge but they’ve got to be physical. And the Ravens’ offense does have to show up. They have to protect the football."

It's no surprise that Ryan likes Baltimore this weekend; he has ties to the organization and he's bound by rivalry to loathe New England. But he also lays out a game plan (if not wholly convincing then certainly credible) for stopping Tom Brady's high-powered offense. Ryan, after all, was the Ravens' defensive coordinator in 2007 when a not-very-good Baltimore team almost upended the undefeated Patriots. (Of course, Ryan's decision to call a timeout late in that game, when it appeared that Baltimore had stopped Brady on 4th and 1, played a non-trivial part in the outcome.)

Wide receiver Wes Welker, one of Brady's favorite targets, was asked Friday about Ryan's prognostication. "That’s Rex for you," he said according to Rapid Reporter Greg Bedard. "Hopefully we can prove him wrong."

As for slowing that tenacious Ravens' defense, guard Logan Mankins suggested more no-huddle.

"I think it helps," Mankins said via Bedard. "(The Ravens) do a lot of different things, so maybe (the no-huddle) will make them not do so many different things."

After a win over the Texans last week, Joe Flacco and the Ravens will take on Tom Brady and the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in the AFC Championship. Jason Horowitz and's Pat Kirwan preview this game. Watch the game on CBS at 3 PM ET.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

I hope this game goes to 14 overtimes to decide the final and neither team is ever the same again. Ugh!

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

I think the Ravens can win as well. The Ravens have a better defense by far and have a good running game which will keep the Patriots off the field.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

I think Rex Ryan is the only one who doesn't know he's getting fired.Woody's just waiting for the ok from Peyton.I'm kinda glad he picked the Ravens; It re-assure's me of a Pats win.Ryan didn't pick the Ravens based on anything except his hatred of BB  the Pats. What an ass clown.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

I couldn't agree more with your comment about the leadership.  "Flash" coaches come in and try to sell a song and dance but it only lasts so long.  His brash let everyone do what they want, I'll do the same, talk sh++ is over the top and the top is coming down.  I like it since the JETS are the most deplorable team in the league, but wonder why teams hire this crap.

How about being professional!  Any idea what that's about?

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Rex Ryan and his Patrick Ewing type of predictions just sealed the Ravens fate. This guy needs to worry about  his team...the locker room his divided, there is no leadership on the Jets. He is looking at 6-10 in 2012<br />

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Coming from a Jets fan...Rex , shut the hell up. If you only coached as good as you run your mouth. Show some class and mind your own business. If you want to bring the Jets to a class organizations, lead by example.....words mean nothing......

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

If for some reason people are thinking just beccause the Steelers beat us that the Ravens will too you are fools.  For the record we own both teams with a winning overall record with Brady at the helm.  The only win the Ravens have against the Pats is the playoff game that Welker was hurt.  Don't underestimate the Pats defense now that they have Chung, Spikes and Mayo healthy. When Brady is going this good he is hard to beat especially at home where he owns a 9-2 playoff record.Cool

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

I think it will be a good game but don't think this is the best Ravens defense - I think the 2009 D was much better.  The Patriots offensive line and receivers will be the difference, and of course Brady.  Joe Flacco (why is this guy always crying that he isn't getting the proper respect) is a mid tier QB in the NFL at best.  I hate to say this but Mark Sanchez is better than good old Joe.  Joe wins because of the D most of the time and when he manages the clock they are a better team.  I do think that the Patriots defense is the worst D that is still in the playoffs but it will show up and make plays.  I am not referencing the Denver game and you can toss that one out the window.

Comparing games against the Steelers where the Ravens scored 25 and 23 points is ridiculous.  I can pick a game too - how did the Ravens do agains Seattle and San Diego (neither team made the playoffs).

Referencing a game from 2009 really doesn't mean much, even though the Ravens defense is almost the same.  The Patriots have changed on offense, for the better believe it or not, but of course the D is the major concern.  I think the defense will hold up and that will be lights out for the Ravens.  As much as I dislike the Steelers the Ravens are right next to them but with more arrogance (the JETS are just dopes).

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

As a Ravens fan I was feeling pretty good about the game, but if Rex Ryan is guaranteeing the Ravens will win then I might as well bet the farm on the Patriots.
