Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Las Vegas and's NFL experts may not give the Ravens much of a chance against the Patriots in the AFC Championship game but not everyone is sold on New England. Take unbiased observer, former Ravens defensive coordinator, and current Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who appeared on WFAN Friday to make his bold prediction.

“First off, the Ravens are going to win this game,” he told Mike Francesa. "But the truth is this. The only way you’re going to beat New England is if you have a great defense. And when you look at the teams that won – obviously Buffalo was the one exception – the Giants had a great game defensively, they were able to get pressure on the quarterback, make plays in the back end. The Ravens had beaten New England before with a dominant defense."

Seems reasonable enough, especially Ryan's implication that the Jets, who finished the season 8-8 and missed the playoffs, didn't have a great defense (they went 0-2 against the Patriots in 2011). And he alluded to that during his conversation with Francesa.

"We beat New England three times but we did it creatively … a different type of defense, (Tom Brady) wasn’t comfortable," Ryan said. "There are only a few teams…Pittsburgh, was more physical than New England. That’s why they won. So the Ravens, in my opinion, are going to take a similar approach to how the Giants played them. Meaning, they’re going to rush four guys on them, I truly think they’re going to rush four. I think Terrell Suggs might be the difference in this game. I don’t know how many guys can block Terrell Suggs. I’ve got the answer: none of them. So I think Suggs is going to be huge but they’ve got to be physical. And the Ravens’ offense does have to show up. They have to protect the football."

It's no surprise that Ryan likes Baltimore this weekend; he has ties to the organization and he's bound by rivalry to loathe New England. But he also lays out a game plan (if not wholly convincing then certainly credible) for stopping Tom Brady's high-powered offense. Ryan, after all, was the Ravens' defensive coordinator in 2007 when a not-very-good Baltimore team almost upended the undefeated Patriots. (Of course, Ryan's decision to call a timeout late in that game, when it appeared that Baltimore had stopped Brady on 4th and 1, played a non-trivial part in the outcome.)

Wide receiver Wes Welker, one of Brady's favorite targets, was asked Friday about Ryan's prognostication. "That’s Rex for you," he said according to Rapid Reporter Greg Bedard. "Hopefully we can prove him wrong."

As for slowing that tenacious Ravens' defense, guard Logan Mankins suggested more no-huddle.

"I think it helps," Mankins said via Bedard. "(The Ravens) do a lot of different things, so maybe (the no-huddle) will make them not do so many different things."

After a win over the Texans last week, Joe Flacco and the Ravens will take on Tom Brady and the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in the AFC Championship. Jason Horowitz and's Pat Kirwan preview this game. Watch the game on CBS at 3 PM ET.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Anyone remember Buddy Ryan, Rex's dad?  He was a solid football man, but just like Rex is shaping up, he had a better way with words than wins.  He never got the Eagles to the promised land after dissing Ditka and taking the Bears' Super Bowl glory for himself. I was able to meet him once and he was a straight up guy--and Heaven knows, I regret his health now.  But the sins of the father are the sins of the son.  I like the Ravens, but I'm not pickin' 'em.  And I don't DISlike Rex, but I don't pick him to take the Jets to the promised land, either.  And a Rex Recovery in NYC doesn't seem likely either based on a lot of past history, not just his own.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

My apologies go out to the Ravens and all their fans. I don't see any reason to watch this game now. Someone just tell me the final score when it's over.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

ok, that podcast ( after the second sentence of the article ) talking about flacco at the start was just really bad. One of the two guys sounds like a complete idiot and has no clue what he's talking about. He says the word " like " at least twenty times per minute and starts off by bashing Flacco, and then not even 2 minutes later says " I've always been Pro-Flacco" the other guys says " really?! " and the fool responds: " I mean I've never really been Pro Flacco " suggesting while he likes Flacco but not reallly. Come on man which is it. It's crud like this that make me wonder how these guys get on Cbs and other outlets.  I have seen users on this site write better stuff than a lot of these so called "experts".

Back to the podcast, it isn't all bad if you can stand the one fool giving his opinion.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Actually, this is sheer briliance on Rex Ryan's part. The more prognostications you throw out, the more likely you are to hit on ONE of them. I won't be surprised if Rex starts offering his predictions before every contest, " There's no way FLuffy loses to Fifi in the domestic poodle division at Westminster" or debatable question, "I'm positive Coach Caldwell will stick with the Colts."

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

You've got to be kidding me. I'll admit right off I'm Patriots guy. Still I respected Rex as a seemingly intelligent guy. But how can you take the guy seriously anymore. Santonio captain? Jets win the Super Bowl every year? Lockerroom blowing up? [LT says worst ever], foot fetish. Come'on Rex, why're you even opening your mouth. Go home, study tape, shut up.

Rex Ryan: 'Ravens are going to win this game'

Ryan has a right to his opinion and I like the Ravens but they won't have a chance to go up gillette and beat Brady on Sunday. The Ravens are lucky the texans didnt have a QB or they would have got beat bad last week. The defense is stout but their season is coming to a end just like Rex Ryan season and the jets weeks ago. Ryan need to worry about getting a new QB because Sanchez sucks and he is the teams down fall. Ryan needs to keep his mouth shut for once and just focus on fixing his team and making the playoffs next season!!!!!!!!!!
