The Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching search has been quiet the last few days but on Sunday night a potentially earth-shaking report emerged that has Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly leaving his gig in Eugene to take a job with the Bucs.

That report comes from KGW Sports' Michael Berk who says that Kelly is "working to finalize a deal that would make him head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs."

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

Berk adds that Kelly will "make the jump" if he can "come to terms on a contract," so let's hold the horses on assuming that this is a done deal, at least for now.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Tribune confirms Berk's report, noting that general manager Mark Dominik and the Glazer family met with Kelly "this past week" and that "both Kelly and the Bucs are proceeding down a path they mutually hope will result in an agreement in the next 24-48 hours."

And then there's this:

"We got Chip Kelly!... Let's go #Buccaneers," Bucs wide receiver Arrelious Benn tweeted Sunday night, before adding that he was only "asking" if the Bucs landed Kelly.

Kelly became the offensive coordinator for Oregon in 2007 and served in that position until head coach Mike Bellotti became the school's athletic director and Kelly took over as head coach.

He's won the PAC-10 Coach of the Year award twice and made a BCS bowl each of his three seasons at Oregon, in large part thanks to his high-powered spread offense that's piled up points for the Ducks since he came to Eugene.

Report: Chip Kelly 'close' to landing Bucs job

brian, what about Harbaugh first at Stanford now with the Niners, I'd say that was a successful transition.  I think Kelly to the Bucs at least on paper would be a great hire...I would prefer Chip Kelly as my Chiefs coach vs Romeo Crennel any day.
This looks like a real head coach choice that could get the florida football fans excited about something in their state.

I cannot come up with a successful transition from college to pros, so help me out.  Spurrier, Saban, Carroll, Petrino (could have been the worst ever), Kiffin.  There's no reason to believe that Kelly will be be any better.  Here's my real question:  Should Oregon players be allowed to transfer, without penalty, if the coach leaves on his own accord?  I'm sure Kelly told them all he'd be there for the full four (4) years, and if he's not, doesn't it make sense they should be allowed to move to another school?

Report: Chip Kelly 'close' to landing Bucs job

Cheating Ducks! When Chip Kelly leaves a high profile program and a successful one at that to a wasteland of NFL mediocrity like PEte Carrol has done...it is only to escape NCAA penalties as many here have mentioned. I laways knew that Chip Kelly was a cheater. The on huddle offense is not legal in college football. It never was...and yet the Oregon Ducks have used it over and over again...only tomget pawned when they play against teams from other conferences.

He is just running from NCAA and penalties that will be given to the Ducks. Why do you think some of the top players are leaving early as well? Guess they learned from Pete to get out before the strom hits, what a joke

Kelly would be better off going to the Raiders where he is a play or two away from making the playoffs - but alas Raider fans he's not - so tough!

Very hard for college coach to make the transition to the NFL - ask Sabin, Holtz, Carrol, or any one of the others that have tried it.

Quick.

Someone ask Mike Freeman if Tampa Bay will be the "Laughingstock of the NFL" if they hire Kelly like he said about Indianapolis hiring Tressel.

Of course Freeman would probably fawn all over the Kelly choice. Of course Tressel whipped Kelly in the 2010 Rose Bowl with what I would consider to be a MUCH more Pro oriented Offense and Defense.
