The Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching search has been quiet the last few days but on Sunday night a potentially earth-shaking report emerged that has Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly leaving his gig in Eugene to take a job with the Bucs.

That report comes from KGW Sports' Michael Berk who says that Kelly is "working to finalize a deal that would make him head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs."

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

Berk adds that Kelly will "make the jump" if he can "come to terms on a contract," so let's hold the horses on assuming that this is a done deal, at least for now.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Tribune confirms Berk's report, noting that general manager Mark Dominik and the Glazer family met with Kelly "this past week" and that "both Kelly and the Bucs are proceeding down a path they mutually hope will result in an agreement in the next 24-48 hours."

And then there's this:

"We got Chip Kelly!... Let's go #Buccaneers," Bucs wide receiver Arrelious Benn tweeted Sunday night, before adding that he was only "asking" if the Bucs landed Kelly.

Kelly became the offensive coordinator for Oregon in 2007 and served in that position until head coach Mike Bellotti became the school's athletic director and Kelly took over as head coach.

He's won the PAC-10 Coach of the Year award twice and made a BCS bowl each of his three seasons at Oregon, in large part thanks to his high-powered spread offense that's piled up points for the Ducks since he came to Eugene.

Report: Chip Kelly 'close' to landing Bucs job

well this a complete surprise to me, but i cant think of a reason to knock it. kelly is one of those offensive wizards, so you have to think he will come up up with an offense that will work in the nfl. maybe he can get tebow for halfback part tiemthrower when the broncos get ridof tebow. myfirst thought is that kelly will do well.n

Couldn't be worse than Saban...

...although I predict he'll come close.

Saban is a solid administrator and a good recruiter (how can any buy what that pipsqueak sells I don't know) for a program that gets a ton of breaks from the media, the refs and the NCAA.
Kelly is a solid recruiter but a one-trick pony (spread) that has excelled in a weaker conference.

This will be a close race to see who is really the poorer coach.

Chip should do well in the pros. If not he can always return to the college ranks just as Saban did. He would be a very sought after coach at the college level. Good luck Chip you have remarkable skills and I wish you well. Not that it's a done deal with Tampa yet. A talent like yours is indeed rare. Oregon should do well as long as we don't lose recruits already committed.

Report: Chip Kelly 'close' to landing Bucs job

The Bucs coaching job right now is not a good job. Little talent, too many thugs, and no support from the owners. Unless he's getting a large pay raise Chip should pass and wait for a better offer. The Bucs need a complete overhaul. It's probably going to be 3-4 years(because of the next 3-4 years of top 5 NFL picks) before they are playoff competitive again. Coaches usually aren't given that kind of time to improve a team.

Report: Chip Kelly 'close' to landing Bucs job

I guess it was too much to hope Chip would finish his career at Oregon.  Still very happy to have had him and if he leaves will hope for the best from him.  He doesn't like the media though, so that could be a challenge in the NFL.

In fact, Chip down right has contempt for members of the media.  Bunch of no-talent jackals like Doyel.
