K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

Typical of 49er fans. I went there for a road game recently with my wife and 2 young daughters and you would not believe the venom and filth they spewed our way. Don't tell me it was an isolated fan becaused it happened on at least a dozen occasions. Trashbag fans.  On;y fans worse are Chicago fans

no one deserves to be threatened on twitter or via any other means. that said, this guy should definitely NOT have a job next season. i, or any other idiot on here, could fumble a punt for free let alone for the money this guy is making. never ceases to amaze how a "professional" player can absolutely suck one when the lights get bright. go get a 9-5 job, williams. same goes for billy cuntsniff. what a joke these playoffs - and the entire '11 NFL season for that matter - have been.

Look the Bill Buckner analogy is hardly original. In fact in the world of sports its has pretty much attained generic status, and is a common saying when someone  really fucks up. This weekend both Harbaughs, Williams, Cundiff, Allen, and in my books Vernon Davis all kinda buggerred up prety good. However, the Harbaughs are coaches, and Williams lone fumble to end it, was so monumental as to rank with our friend Billy Buckner's miscue, shall we say. It is pretty unusual in all pro team sports to have three flubs of this size though in only two games, in the same year. I'm not a hater, in fact my team is Indianapolis, and I really don't care who wins the past two games so long as New England doesn't win the all the marbles. It was entertaining ball to say the least, i'm just giving an objective point of view by saying a spade is a spade, and telling it like it is. Pure and simple the aforementioned fucked up is all i'm saying, not the Team, not the refs.  ( for a change). They are what we call goats in sports... nuff said, end of story, and adios til next time..

That is not a death threat.  People can say they hope you die, and that is very VERY different from saying "I'm going to kill you."  It's too bad that he can't hold onto the ball and that he was holding it out with 2 hands like an idiot.  It's something a cocky pro does even though it's mechanically stupid and you learn to hold the ball correctly when you are a child.  It's just like in baseball when they catch a fly ball with one hand even though everyone knows you are supposed to use two hands to be fundamentally correct.  This kid doesn't deserve death threats, but I also don't see any, either.

Keep your head up Kyle......when Braylon Edwards and Josh Morgan were out, you stepped up.  Hope you're a part of the team next season.  Thanks for a great ride 9ers!  It was great to finally have hope for the Super Bowl rather than expecting a losing season.

Hey Death Threatener you should feel ashamed of yourself threathening the poor guy. Face it that wasn't even his origional job and he's doing in in the championship game!!!!! If you a real fan you should feel happy that the Niners even made it this far. You should get a life and grow up because you sure are making this guy's life miserable.Undecided

Here we go again with the extreme fanatics again. People should just get over it if thats their team and remember its only a game. you can always root for 'em next year. No matter what the outcome was violence is not the answer SF fans dont you remember MLB opening day at Dodger Stadium. We should not wish the death of the player especially his family, just cause it cost your team a championship and you some money. If you dont have the money to lose then dont bet. Team sports is not always a guaranteed win, thats why there are odds and point spreads. Let it go, remember there's always next year!!
