K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via CBSSports.com’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

there isn't a fanbase that isn't capable of the same thing.   sports have become so intertwined with our society that people somehow take it personal if a team (or player) fails.   i'm as guilty as anyone,  but i'd like to think that i wouldn't wish for Andy Dalton to die because he throws an interception....

If this story was about the Eagles and an Eagles fan making death threats, it would headline the 5 o'clock news.

I say lump or stereo-type all 49ers fans to be crazy, creepy wackjobs like so many of you out there do to Philly fans. Fair is fair. Hell, I've heard quite a bit from some of you big mouthed San Franciso fans... about how Philly fans are so horrible. Have to say... I absolutely enjoyed you guys getting so close to the SB... and them coming up empty. Thank god the Giants (which by the way I can't stand) won... because when you've been out of the playoffs for eight stinking years, you don't deserve to go right to the SB. That's like going to Best Buy to buy a $199 32" TV during Black Friday, and cutting the line all the way to the front. You have to pay your dues... and thank god you guys didn't get to the SB. You already got your lucky, one in a million World Series win by clicking on every possible cyclinder at the right exact time. That's all we all needed to hear... was how great your 49ers are, after winning a SB when everything came together perfectly. The 49ers WERE great... in the 80's and 90's with Montana and Young. At least you have your memories on tape. Enjoy next year's downhill slope, finishing below the Seattle Seachickens.

While I can't stand the NY Giants, at least they have paid their stinking dues and are typically a playoff team every other year.

Yes indeed, those San Franciscans sure do love their football don't they?  A little too much in my estimation - Grow Up!

I do not care about death wishes or lame threats, He played bad, cut this guy and go on . You cannot blame 1 person for a team loss. Fix it and move on.

Death threats are ignorant at best, but I disagree with his teammate because this guy was the direct cause of the 49ers losing. It's admirable and they're good teammates to have his back, but two bad screw ups in a game of that magnitude is...well, beyond the pale.

I follow the Cowboys so naturally, not being a fan of the Giants I watched the game thinking that Alex Smith alone would be the demise of the niners great season. So, trust me as a Cowboy fan, I would not be tweeting ill will towards any Cowboys players after a loss in the NFC Championship Game!!!! Some fans get too emotionally involved. Unless of course you bet big money.

ok i'm a packers fan. we fucked up with 4 turnovers in the giants game. i am not blaming it on one player, the whole team lost the damn game! we weren't ready to play playoff football which we will hopefully correct by next year. niners couldn't stop the giants when they needed to, point blank. and the 49ers were 1/13 on 3rd down, thats not gonna cut it! bottom line is one player doesnt lose the game, its a team effort.
