K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

By Josh Katzowitz

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via CBSSports.com’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

WHOA!! Hold the phone! Wasn't that ugly Winter Classic beatdown on the East Coast? And what about the riots in Chicago when the Bulls won and the BS riots they had when Paterno got fired... Let's focus on the issue at hand. Ridiculous people are everywhere!

I just don't know what to think of the west coast anymore. Vancouver riots with punk rock kids that don't even watch hockey .... riots in the street when the lakers win the title, that fan who got beat up at the baseball game, this 49er getting death threats .... This is just the sports related topics. There are all kinds of weird stories that come from out there.

Not sayin gthe dude deserves to have his life threaten but I think he should be pulled from special teams. Funny how history repeats itself but if you look up Kyle Williams last game in college @AZ State. His fumble in the 4th QTR with the score tied 17 - 17 cost AZ State the game. Arizona beat AZ State 20 -17. It's obvious this guy can't play under pressure! I wonder if the front office knew about these issues.

Not sure if many of us 9ers fan knew this but after reading this I wouldn't have had Kyle any where near our special teams especailly in a NFC Championship Game. Obviously this guy has issues with holding on to the ball. If you look up his last game at AZ State against AZ he did the same exact thing in the 4th QTR to lose against his rival school. AZ State lost to AZ 20 - 17 because Kyle Williams fumbled the ball. This s very upsetting but still he does not deserve to be threaten like he has been, I think he deserves to be pulled from special teams until he can control his issues with holding on to the ball.

Football games are predetermined and if you haven't figured that out yet than you may not see the $$$$$$
Not all games are done but when dream matchups and fan appeal equals big paydays for networks
and owners then outcomes need to be altered. That's part of the business!!! Raven receiver crosses the plane
with ball in possession and is then ripped out. The league is suppose to look at every TD and it didn't. When a scorer
hits the pylon, running back crosses the plane, it's a TD. What's the difference? Kicker misses a field goal and
never missed one from that distance? Something fishy here???

Amazing how truly stupid people are.  Sure Williams could have made a couple better choices but a lot of players and coaches could have.  Why aren't these people complaining about the player(s) that were supposed to be covering Bear Pascoe or Hakeem Nicks on their touchdowns?  Why aren't they complaining about Greg Roman for calling that dumbass reverse in the rain, Brad Seely for even allowing Williams to do anything but fair catch the ball after his prior muff and let it bounce and then grab it on the run antics in this and the last game?  What about Harabaugh?  He had the final say on these things?  Blame him.

To me, these folks that are griping and ready to throw Kyle Williams under the bus are not fans.  They're Poseurs...  Bandwagoneers...  They're not at the games through thick or thin.  When the team is winning they're on board.  But when the team is losing, they're nowhere to be found.  Chumps!  One and all!!!  My game ball would go to all you losers that jump on the bandwagon when the going is good and bail like cowards when the going gets tough.

How many great 3rd down grabs did Williams make this year to keep comeback drives alive for the 49ers?  And yet a few bad plays in the playoffs and everyone is ready for him to walk the plank.  Sickening to know that these are the morons I get grouped in with because I've been a 49er fan since I was 7 years old.  Oh well...

Thank you 49ers for remarkably exceeding expectations.  I can only hope this group stays together for a while.
