K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

By Josh Katzowitz

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via CBSSports.com’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

Lol. Wonder what cundiffs twitter looks like?? Lets just lay it down here. Its williams fault. Those are mistakes in sports you do NOT make especially in the playoffs and in the NFL. and this knucklehead makes milliins of dollars per year to **** it all up. His team should be ripping him a new one. It his fault and if its not then he was a hell of a lot larger contributer to their loss then a, what is he, oh yea. A PUNT RETURNER (what a loser) should ever be. All you have to do is waive your arms and catch the ball. Thats what he did the last few times. Waivers alert. This guy belongs in the garbage. But not dead of course. Threatening is immature

The 49ers played a great game. It just is a higher playing field when you get to the championship games. They needed to play better on third down. Less fumbles would have helped. But in the end you have to play mistake-free ball to advance. The niners season was not tainted at all by the loss. They still played well enough to take it to OT. Go NINERS!!!!!

1 of 14 on 3rd down?  12 of 26 passes completed, but only one to a WR all day long!? Please, that kind of showing doesn't belong in the SB.  That's what lost the game. Sure, this kid screwed up, but really, death threats? The people who did that are bottom feeding scum who are miserable and want to spread their misery. The bottom line is that the Niners needed more from Smith and they wouldn't have been in that situation to begin with.

30 People getting arrested & 120 people getting kick out doesn't mean anything. It obvious SF was doing everthing possible to control the unruley fans & for 120 to get kicked out says a lot. SF did recieve a lot of negative attention last year because of what happened in preseason & what happened to Brian Stow. If you lived out here you would have a better grasp on what's happening & everyone ignorant like the people that commited those rude acts aren't the faithful Frisco fans. If you read the threads on here it's plenty of us true 9er fans supporting Kyle Willaims still & knocking those idiots that threaten him. It's the rest of the country that's passing judgement on a entire fan base for something a few ignorant people are doing. Single those idiots out not the 9er nation nor Frisco. I know I can speak for the true 9ers fans & walk away happy with the results from this year. Haven't been to the playoffs in 9 years, haven't had a NFC Championship home game in 14 years. This what we accomplished without an offseason so I'm looking forward next season. Yes I'm dissappointed with Kyle Williams because both of those plays really effected the outcome of the game but I still don't wish any ill will on the man he's human just like the rest of us!.

I guess Alex Smith completing less than 50% of his passes and only 1 to a WR and the offense going 1 for 13 on 3rd down was all Kyle Williams fault.

90% of people are decent it is the other 10% that cause all the laws and rules to be written.  The overwhelming majority of people understood.  We have all had days where we fouled everything we touched up.  It is just that our mistakes are not played out to millions on TV.

I feel sympathy for him, and he will be a very motivated player next year.

Do not take it too hard Mr. Willams.

LoveUtley where are you getting these stats from? It obvious you don't live in this state nor can you read. Come with solid proof before you go running your mouth with a bunch BS trying to make 9er fans look bad.
