K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

By Josh Katzowitz

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via CBSSports.com’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

San Fran fans are too busy getting put into comas and shooting each other in NFL preseason games. 140 arrests at NFC Championship game. Real classy. Find it funny how that doesn't make headline news. Liberal scumbags.

The people tweetn' his death, are the same people that wouldn't be able to catch the punt let alone hang on to it.  Grow up and get a life!  I'm sure you "dropped the ball" a few times in your work environment, but your boss still kept you on staff.  I wonder if Lee Evans is getting death tweets for dropping the game winning TD with 19 secs left against the Pats.  Athletes are just humans too, even pro athletes.

I can't believe that we have people in the U.S. that are that stupid and ignorant, to go as far as making a death threat on a pro player.  Hearing about a death threat on a football player is crazy.  I didn't realize that we lived in a country with crazed soccer fans.  Williams made a mistake he has to live with it.  I would love to meet this person that has never made any mistakes in his pathetic life.  Hey 49ner fans, good season, walk away with heads up.  You could have had a season like my colts.  Maybe I need to send out my death threat.  Oh that's right I'm not a crazy, lunitic of a fan and understand you have ups and downs.  What a loser.

I would like to add one more thing.  The knuckle heads who posted about not feeling bad for the kid is ridiculous.  I played college ball and also tried out for the Jets in 83.  Who ever played at that level and didn't make a mistake is being ridiculous.  The first muffed punt was purely by accident the ball takes weird hops, it's a football.  The second fumble is totally on the player but that is what makes it a great game!  Mistakes will make or break you, this time it broke the 49ers!  In regards to Harbaugh he is a players coach and he lives or dies by his players, this time he took it on the chin.  If he was smart he would back this player up 100% building even more trust and faith with all his other players!!!

First of all who ever was ridiculous enough to post such comments is not human.  It's just a game and games are won on mistakes.  It has really no effect on our lives, it is there for entertainment!!!  I love the game of football and I never miss a game, that being said I do get upset when my team loses but after a few hours life is back to normal.  It is sad that people take so much regard for a game played by over grown children!!!

These animals with death threats obviously have nothing else to live for!

The 49ers played a great game and with that defense and Alex Smith becoming a good QB the fans have a lot to look forward to!!!

1 of 14 on third down. That is why they lost the game. I'm assuming those that made the threats are degenerate gamblers more than they are actual 49'ers fans. Making death threats on Twitter that can be traced right back to you = not too bright.

Some of these comments are just plain stuoid. Attacks at this kid hey how long has he been returning punts, it was Ted Gin Jr s job all year. Attack on Harbaough what you 9er fans want Singletary back. You wouldn't have even made the palyoffs. You should be happy you made it that far.

What a shame you have to feel bad for this kid. I know all the arm chair quarterbacks know how easy it is to play professional sports. It is only a game, get a life. Everyone has their muscles on when they can type. Hopefully Twitter can trace the tweets and let the idiots really face the music.

Ftballgenius just like when you were wrong about the Monta Ellis situation.  CBS should be ashamed to let racists post on here like ftballgenius and every other fake ID he uses.
