K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

By Josh Katzowitz

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via CBSSports.com’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

This is why some people need to get a life, its just a game... being a fanatic is to support your team and know the greats that played... seeing the super bowl wins with your family and cheerishing every moment..Look at all the crazy things that happen, not in football but in sports alone......it happens its what makes the game fun and how one thing can change the course of the game......the niners could have won it easily they stopped the giants from scoring on the muffed punt.........Look at the giants last superbowl, how lucky was david tyree? Billy buckner letting an easy ground ball that a little kid could of caught? point is it happens. anyone who watched the first game new it was tough for both teams, so going into the game you should have known this would be down to the wire! And for those finatic fans, you arent members of the team so stop going around acting like your part of the team to play all those games and then loose. Put yourself in that young mans shoes! half of us here cant even play out there, and they lost so we going to blame one man? throughout the whole season their defense rocked, williams was part of that as he was part of that success. and they were all part of that lose...............................

.......In five years i garuntee no one will remember what he did. without using google tell me who won the super bowl 5 years ago 10 years ago 26 years ago..... just as life and games come and go so do we.........so really whats the point? there are more severe things in this world to freak over then a game

Yeah the guy messed up, but it was the whole offense that couldnt move the ball on 3rd downs.  The 49ers better get more weapons for next year.

So why is the fool, self-centered idiot TE for the 49er's getting a pass for his personal fouls?  He was part of the problem.   Yes, he made a couple of good plays...but really?  "Hey world, check out my TD dance and watch me cheapshot someone when they're not looking."  Can't win with him, huh Coach Singletary?  How does this POS get a pass for his antics?  Stay focused, people!  Take into consideration the complete picture.  Shameful.  Team, right?

The guy messed up pretty bad, especially on the one that hit his knee. The other one was actually a good play by the defender. He deserves some ridicule, but death threats are taking it a little far.

This is a pathetic thing to hear about. Yes Williams blew some crucial plays, but  that does not give ANYONE THE RIGHT to threaten anyone with threats of physical force!
To those who think this is "ok" then you really should have a hard look at yourselves. You have done nothing but disgrace 49ers fans!!!

The bottom line is that football is a game. The poor guy is surely being hard enough on himself. Anyone who feels that the guy should fear for his life because he made some big "GAME" mistakes, should be beat about the head themselves.

My friend, the one going on about the poor poor Philly fans--the Sixers actually beat the Lakers in the 83 Finals with Moses Malone and Dr. J, Mo Cheeks and Andrew Toney--nothing like letting the facts get in the way of a good sob story!!

I said going back the last 25 years... before the chamionship of the 76ers then... which is more than 25 years... almost 29. I'm talking about the 2001 series against Shaq and Kobe... you tool.
