NewtonBy Josh Katzowitz

Now that the Patriots and Giants officially are heading to Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI, that means nobody from New England and New York will be flying to Honolulu this week for the Pro Bowl.

Which means we get tons of additions and deletions to the roster!

Here’s the list so far.

-Panthers standout rookie quarterback Cam Newton will replace Eli Manning on the NFC roster. As you well know, Newton threw for 4,051 yards passing, the most ever by a rookie quarterback in NFL history while recording 21 touchdowns and posting an 84.5 quarterback rating. Newton also rushed for 14 scores, the most ever by an NFL quarterback.

-Bears defensive end Julius Peppers will take over for New York’s Jason Pierre-Paul. This is Peppers’ seventh Pro Bowl appearance, and it’s the first time since Richard Dent in the mid-1980s that a Chicago defensive end has made the roster in back-to-back seasons.

-Jets guard Brandon Moore will replace New England’s Brian Waters on the AFC roster. This is Moore’s first Pro Bowl selection. Ravens guard Ben Grubbs will take over for Logan Mankins.

-Bad news for Tim Tebow. According to Pro Football Talk, Ben Roethlisberger “definitely” is attending the Pro Bowl festivities, meaning Tebow, the second alternate, will be staying home this week (and maybe going on tour with Brad Paisley instead).

-As the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton replaces Tom Brady, tight end Jermaine Gresham replaces Rob Gronkowski and defensive tackle Geno Atkins replaces Vince Wilfork.

Cam Newton and other Pro Bowl roster additions

2 rookies in the pro bowl tells alot about the sorry state of quarterbacking in the NFL.

Only an idiot neglects the rushing portion of a QB's reportoire. Especially when that player ran for the 2nd most TDs in the league, and despite being a QB added another 700 yards rushing.

There's no doubt that Rogers and Brees deserved the Pro Bowl nod, as did Eli. However, you can't tell me this guy isn't more important than the 15th QB in the NFL, in his rookie year. I mean... comeon man. You know as well as I do that all but perhaps 6 franchises would be just as good or better off with Cam as their QB. And since 6 QB make the Pro Bowl, it doesn't matter to me that the NFC had 3 inarguable guys who made it.

After all, it isn't like Cam was top 5 in QB for TD he was responsible for.
So there is no doubt Rodgers and Brees deserved the pro bowl nod -- I agree with that.  Then you say, Eli Manning deserved it to.  Here are some stats for you:

E. Manning -- 4933 yards passing, 29 tds, 61.0% completion, QB rating 92.9 -- Giants finished 9-7
M. Stafford -- 5038 yards passing, 41 tds, 63.5% completion, QB rating 97.2 -- Lions finished 10-6

If the NFC had 3 guys who, as you say, inarguably deserved to make the team -- How is it that Stafford threw for more yards, threw for more tds, completed a better %, had a higher QB rating and his team finished with a better record while playing a tougher schedule - so if Manning inarguably deserved to make it -- what about Stafford?

Now on to the Panther fans who say Newton revolutionized the QB position this year -- Here are some stats for JUST this year:

C.Newton -- 253.2 yards pass/game, 44.1 yards rushing/game, QB rating 84.5
M. Vick   --  254.1 yards pass/game, 45.2 yards rushing/game, QB rating 84.9

Obviously Vick missed 3 games, so Newton's year end totals are higher, but Vick put up exactly the same numbers as Newton in a year that was considered a failure by his standards.  Yet in Carolina, you seem to believe Newton invented the wheel, when Vick basically put up better numbers than Newton sans the rushing TDs.

And NOT to take anything away from Newton and his rushing TDs -- it is an extremely impressive record to break, BUT, 6 were for 1 yard out and three others were less than 5 yards.

I'm not saying Newton didn't have a great year for a rookie, but there is exactly zero chance he had the 4th best year for a QB in the NFC in 2011.

What Newton had was an impressive ROOKIE year -- it was not a pro bowl caliber year and DEFINITELY not a pro bowl caliber year in the NFC in 2011.  One guy made the comment that sums it up perfectly -- the NFL is trying anything to get ratings for the Pro Bowl -- Cam Newton is a popular player who will help ratings.  THAT is the reason he is going to Pro Bowl, not because he outperformed the other QBs in the NFC.

For those doubting that Cam revolutionized the game: did any other QB rush for 14 touchdowns? Nope. How about throw 400 yard games in his first 2 games in the NFL? Nope. 4000 yards through the air and 500 on the ground? Nope. How about tds for a rookie with 35? Nope. Point is, this kid came in with the world against him, the majority of the media, no offseason, many haters and he shut them up. Cam deserves the pro bowl. Stafford had his opportunity of glory and that didn't end well. Taking an offense from 32nd to 7th is incredible. Give Cam the credit he deserves.
They have an award for what Cam Newton did this year -- it is called Rookie of the Year.

His numbers were so impressive the 4000 yards put him 10th in the NFL.  His 60% completions put him 18th in the NFL.  His 84.5 QB rating put him 15th in the NFL.  His 21 passing TDs were 12th in the NFL.

As a matter of fact -- Michael Vick actually averaged more yards passing per game than Cam this year, more yards rushing per game then Cam this year and had a better QB rating than Cam this year.  So how exactly did Cam revolutionize the game??  Because he was used as a short yardage back in goal line situations???  Tebow was used the same way last year.

The perfect example of how popularity plays a major role in the Pro Bowl -- Tebow was a Pro Bowl alternate for the AFC and the guy didn't even complete 50% of his passes on the year.  LOL.

i am a little shocked that stafford did not make the probowl. i am however happy he isnt playing. do not want an injury in a meaningless game (robert edwards). that being said every year us lion fans have to hear how a lion qb hasn't been in the probowl since moses showed us the 15 commandments...oops ten Ten commandments (see mel brooks history of the world), when he did have a monster year of 5k passing and 41 TD.

looking forward to the season opener and its only 1/23.

geez people...lighten up. Anybody who ever watched the Pro Bowl of All Star game?...whatever the F you want to call it  everyone knows that this is just a popularity contest, much like the baseball All Star game...just give some credit where credit is due...the NFC had some AWESOME representation this year....Brees, Rodgers, Stafford, Manning, Newton, and more...they had phenonmenal seasons...they can't ALL be in the game, but they all deserved it...plus they all have their own specific attributes...some have the advantage of great receivers,...some have great running ability...some have the advantage of great defenses which give them the opportunity to free up their game plan....not everyone will be selected, although they may deserve to be...at least the NFC QB's will kick their AFC counterparts ass when it comes to talent

Roethlisberger is going to play? Two weeks ago he could barely walk, and now he`s ready to go? If he was really that hurt, you`d think the Steelers organization would tell him he`s out, so he can get his hurt ankle healed up... Or maybe he needs the money to pay-off all of those out of court settlements.Innocent
