NewtonBy Josh Katzowitz

Now that the Patriots and Giants officially are heading to Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI, that means nobody from New England and New York will be flying to Honolulu this week for the Pro Bowl.

Which means we get tons of additions and deletions to the roster!

Here’s the list so far.

-Panthers standout rookie quarterback Cam Newton will replace Eli Manning on the NFC roster. As you well know, Newton threw for 4,051 yards passing, the most ever by a rookie quarterback in NFL history while recording 21 touchdowns and posting an 84.5 quarterback rating. Newton also rushed for 14 scores, the most ever by an NFL quarterback.

-Bears defensive end Julius Peppers will take over for New York’s Jason Pierre-Paul. This is Peppers’ seventh Pro Bowl appearance, and it’s the first time since Richard Dent in the mid-1980s that a Chicago defensive end has made the roster in back-to-back seasons.

-Jets guard Brandon Moore will replace New England’s Brian Waters on the AFC roster. This is Moore’s first Pro Bowl selection. Ravens guard Ben Grubbs will take over for Logan Mankins.

-Bad news for Tim Tebow. According to Pro Football Talk, Ben Roethlisberger “definitely” is attending the Pro Bowl festivities, meaning Tebow, the second alternate, will be staying home this week (and maybe going on tour with Brad Paisley instead).

-As the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton replaces Tom Brady, tight end Jermaine Gresham replaces Rob Gronkowski and defensive tackle Geno Atkins replaces Vince Wilfork.

Cam Newton and other Pro Bowl roster additions

Probably because Stafford is a jerk. And the Pro Bowl is for the players people want to see not the players who necessarily put up the stats. There is a difference. Besides, Cam Newton, ,, and Drew Brees had awesome seasons too. They earned it just as much given their own circumstances. Just congratulate them and move on.

Kazitheus1776,
Stafford is a jerk, really?? Why dont you post something to back that up. Oh, becuase Stafford has done NOTHING to prove that he is a jerk, in fact he has dont the complete opposite.

I agree that all of those guys had awesome seasons, including Cam. I am just saying that Stafford not only had a better season, so did his team. Just because the Pro Bowl is about who people want to see, doesnt mean it should be about that. Stafford had the 5th most yards in the history of the NFL. He also threw for more TD's than Newton had total, rushing and throwing combined. Stafford had 41 and Newton had 35. Also, Newton had 17 INT, and Stafford had 16 INT. Based on stats, Stafford should be in the Pro Bowl.

Newton had a great season, rookie of the year by far, but Stafford deserves more credit for the season he had.

Cam Newton and other Pro Bowl roster additions

Both Stafford and Newton have their own specific accolades and both deserve pro bowl recognition but c'mon, Cam just revolutionized the game, give him due credit.
Can you explain to me how Newton revolutionalize the game???  Running QBs have been a part of football for years.  It is not like Cam Newton invented the wheel or something.  Randall Cunningham did what Newton is doing now 20 years ago.  Just because he is used as a goal line back because of his size doesn't mean he revolutionized the game.  Tebow is used in the same sense.

Fact is -- Cam's stats were nowhere near what Stafford did.  On top of that -- in their head to head battle -- Stafford threw for 338 and 5 tds, while Newton handed the game to the Lions by throwing 4 interceptions.

Exactly how did Newton "revolutionize" the game? Hell, Steve Grogan, a pocket passer primarily, ran for 12 TDs in 1976. That's 30+ years that QBs have run and not broke that record. His rushing yards is nowhere near the most for a QB. Cam had a great season yes. Extremely impressive given it being his rookie campaign. This does not mean he revolutionized the game. Mike Vick used to run a lot more too. So did McNabb when he first came into the league. Andre Ware, Kordell Stewart are a couple others. The fact that he set a single season record does not revolutionize the game. What makes him better than Vick however is that Cam is far more accurate at this stage of his career as a passer.

If the probowl was based on stats, Eli would not have gotten in to begin with. Stafford would have beat him out for the 3rd spot handily.

Cam Newton and other Pro Bowl roster additions

Adding Cam Newton to the Pro Bowl roster will make it even funner to watch, given that he will play at least for some time. Newton, Brees and Rodgers will represent the NFC very well.

By the same token Newton is the only QB to ever run for 14 TDs.  This is such a hard year with so many statistically great years for QBs.  Personally I'd rather see Stafford, although I really think in such a physical sport as football that the Pro Bowl is just a meaningless chance to end a career.

I see where you're coming from Mike, but what All Star game is not a populatiry contest?  Maybe the winning team in the Pro Bowl should determine home field advantage for the Super Bowl.  Laughing

This whole mess could be avoided if they just put the Pro Bowl back to being after the Superbowl. It was a dumb idea to move it in the first place, an even dumber idea to move it away from Hawaii with hopes of playing in Miami (that failed).

Stafford and Johnson can stay home and rest.  The only thing that brings Newton's stock up is his running ability, but he is not going to do that in the Pro Bowl so he is going to have to throw and hand off, which he can do, just not as good as Stafford, obviously.

Stafford is a jerk?!?!  Really???  Stafford has been nothing but the consummate professional since joining the Lions organization.  He has suffered thru a string of injuries his first two years, but you never heard a single complaint.  He busted his tail rehabbing and got back on the field this year and became one of only 4 QBs in the history of the NFL to ever throw for 5,000 yards and 40 tds in a season.

While I agree Rodgers and Brees had unbelievable seasons -- Eli Manning had a great year, but not as good as Stafford.  Cam Newton had a great year for a rookie, but not even close to the season Stafford had.

The only reason Manning and Newton were picked for the Popularity (Pro) Bowl is -- Manning plays in NY and his last name is Manning.  Newton was crazy popular before the NFL and it carried over to his rookie season.

That is the main reason why the Pro Bowl is a joke -- it has just as much to do with popularity as it does with production.  The funniest part of it all -- Even if Newton isn't able to go to the Pro Bowl, Stafford STILL doesn't go in his place -- Tony Romo is the 2nd alternate.  LMAO.  That should tell you all you need to know about the Pro Bowl.

Stafford has a season that only 3 other QBs in the history of the NFL have ever had, yet he is the 6th QB in the line for the Pro Bowl in the NFC.  HAHA!!!  Wonder why no one takes the Pro Bowl seriously?!?!
