Report: Philbin won't retain Bowles in Miami

BowlesBy Josh Katzowitz

Todd Bowles has been linked to the head coaching openings in Oakland and, considering he was the Dolphins interim after the organization fired Tony Sparano, in Miami. Instead, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross hired Joe Philbin as the head coach, and now, it appears Bowles is out of a job completely.

That’s the word from the South Florida Sun Sentinel, which writes that Philbin won’t return Bowles to his previous position as defensive coordinator and won’t consider him for a secondary coach job.

Since he was hired last week, Philbin has met with Sparano’s holdover assistant coaches, but he apparently is interested in hiring Bengals secondary coach Kevin Coyle as Miami’s new defensive coordinator.

Bowles -- who went 2-1 after replacing Sparano -- was in charge of the Miami defense for the past four seasons, and this year, the Dolphins ranked sixth-best in the league in points allowed.

Report: Philbin won't retain Bowles in Miami

May I ask exactly why everyone is pushing Matt Moore out the door?  Why should Miami break the bank with an untested FA or trade away their draft for an unproven round 1 rookie?  I say you take the best available player  (a top 10 draft pick isn't all that bad whether it's a QB or not) and only go after a top FA if the player can help you win in the next 2-3 years, and I dont think Miami has enough pieces in place to make that happen.  Someone will throw stupid money at Flynn and take a chance.  I think you might get a better return on investment if Manning proves to be healthy.

Im wondering whats gonna happen with our draft pick. With Flynn being a FA this year and prob has a good chance of Miami signing him with Philbin at HC. Just wonder if Flynn would be another Kolb but if Philbin brings in WC offense then it would be a good thing to maybe sign Flynn, but i wouldntbreak the bank and would still try to draft a QB in the 2nd round as insurnace. You could still find a Andy Dalton talent this year, after top 3 qbs theres about 5 or 6 still worth looking at esp in 2nd and 3rd round.

I dont like this move unless Bowles was not committed or satisfied with being the DC - which we may never know.  The defense let the team down early but carried them after Moore got going at QB.  Is the bengals secondary coach an upgrade?

for someone that was the interim head coach, it is usually best to let them go. it will probably not work out. you could not really expect him to be loyal.

Whle Bowles did a fine job for the fins, it was the right move. The last thing Philbin needs is to have a Bowles hangover. It will also eliminate potential dissection by certain players who were not happy Bowles did not get the job. Fins needed a total cleaning. Let's all hope McCarthy wasn't lying n his praise for Philbin. My family and I are getting tired of sitting in the sun, getting sun burned and losing games. It is time to go back to the playoffs!!!

I don't know about HC material, but he definitey will ge scooped up by someone as a DC probably, and he will be the new go to interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule for HC hires.....

I completely understand and respect new HC Philbin's desire to populate his coaching staff with whomever he feels most comfortable (especially if he feels they give him the best chance to win).

Expect Todd Bowles to be scooped up quickly though ... he is HC material.  And a little more seasoning should ensure that he will be a success when he gets a HC stint.

clean house

the dolphins roster and staff is terrible---the new coach needs to start over.  But, with their bad GM, nothing will change down there--more losses in 2012.
