Bruce Allen has been hired to be Oakland's next coach (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

Dennis Allen, the former defensive coordinator of the Broncos, has been hired to be the next Raiders head coach, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman has confirmed (the news was originally reported by Fox’s Jay Glazer).

Reports out of Oakland suggested Allen had done well in his two interviews with the Oakland front office and that early favorite Winston Moss, the Packers assistant head coach, had not.

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

In his only season as the head of Denver’s defense, he helped lead a unit that propped up quarterback Tim Tebow for the last half of the season and allowed the Broncos to win the AFC West and beat the Steelers in the first round of the postseason.

Glazer writes that the two sides still have to negotiate a deal, but with Allen, the Raiders will get a coach whose defense finished in the bottom half of the league standings but who was lauded for the improvements his unit made in the final half of the season.

Although Moss -- who knows new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie quite well from their days together in Green Bay, leading to the speculation that he had a good chance of landing the job -- seemingly fell out of favor during the interviewing process, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg reportedly had a good shot at landing the job.

The Raiders also interviewed Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice and former Dolphins defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, while Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy declined his chance to interview.

Considering former owner Al Davis was such a big proponent of hiring offensive-minded coaches (see: Hue Jackson, Tom Cable, Lane Kiffin, Art Shell, Norv Turner, Bill Callahan, Jon Gruden, etc.), seeing a defensive-minded coach hired is an interesting concept.

It shows that Mark Davis, Al Davis’ son who is now in charge, will take a different tact than this father. Only time will tell whether this new path is the beginning of a Raiders resurgence or if Al Davis had the right idea the whole time.

Very good hire.  He was very well respected in New Orleans, and he learned a great deal there.  He made a huge leap from secondary coach to D coordinator to head coach in a VERY short time frame.  He will immediately improve the Raiders.  Good luck to him.

The fact that the Denver defense was not a top defense statistically was, in large part, due to the offense, which led the NFL in three-and-outs, putting the defense on the field that much more. The defense was the key to the Broncos resurgence during the season; how would Tebow had come from behind to win close games had the defense not kept the games close to begin with...?

Now, I will say that I would have preferred someone with a larger body of work (my preference was Fewell), but not having as much experience has not always been a death knell; I'll say wait and see before I say that this or that 'will happen'. Of course, I don't pretend to know everything that people who are paid to do the job don't...

Anyone who comes to these boards and claims to know if a coach will become a bust or become the next Bill Parcells is an idiot.  Let the guy have a chance, sit back, and enjoy the ride.  He is known for discipline, and God knows the Raiders need that.

Ha! 5 years??!!! Are you kidding me?? NO ONE gets that long anymore.... The only way he makes it to 5 years is if he gets this team to the Super Bowl by year 2 or 3 (and given the Raiders' recent history with coaches, he may not even have that long!)..... And do you see that happening??!! He coordinated a defense for 1 year and they finished in the BOTTOM HALF!

Not exactly a John Fox/ Marvin Lewis/ Tony Dungy (guys who were long ESTABLISHED defensive minds who were around for a while as head coaches---2 of them, of course, are still head coaches) type of hire......

Allen, quite frankly, is a fraud......and everybody will see this in the fall.

Just let the guy have the job for 5 years. There may be a few off games, do not get crazy.
The team needs time to grow.
Just let this guy do his thing and hopefully they can be great again.

All those fired coaches have one thing in common with Andy Reid, equal amount of Super Bowl rings. As a matter of fact I
have as many Super Bowl rings as the entire Philly organization. A loser like you and your wet dream team shouldn't "pile on"
a real organization, just get one ring before you run your mouth.

As for this hire, this is a BAD decision..... So what if he's a military-style disciplinarian and that the Broncos defense "improved" in the second half of the season..... THEY WERE STILL RANKED IN THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE LEAGUE!!

And, naturally, like any suspect defense, they were absolutely blasted by the Patriots in the playoffs.....

This hire will be Reggie McKenzie's undoing in Oakland. You heard it here first....

Art Shell went 54-38 with the Raiders from '89-'94..... How is that incompetent??
