Bruce Allen has been hired to be Oakland's next coach (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

Dennis Allen, the former defensive coordinator of the Broncos, has been hired to be the next Raiders head coach,'s Mike Freeman has confirmed (the news was originally reported by Fox’s Jay Glazer).

Reports out of Oakland suggested Allen had done well in his two interviews with the Oakland front office and that early favorite Winston Moss, the Packers assistant head coach, had not.

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

In his only season as the head of Denver’s defense, he helped lead a unit that propped up quarterback Tim Tebow for the last half of the season and allowed the Broncos to win the AFC West and beat the Steelers in the first round of the postseason.

Glazer writes that the two sides still have to negotiate a deal, but with Allen, the Raiders will get a coach whose defense finished in the bottom half of the league standings but who was lauded for the improvements his unit made in the final half of the season.

Although Moss -- who knows new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie quite well from their days together in Green Bay, leading to the speculation that he had a good chance of landing the job -- seemingly fell out of favor during the interviewing process, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg reportedly had a good shot at landing the job.

The Raiders also interviewed Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice and former Dolphins defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, while Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy declined his chance to interview.

Considering former owner Al Davis was such a big proponent of hiring offensive-minded coaches (see: Hue Jackson, Tom Cable, Lane Kiffin, Art Shell, Norv Turner, Bill Callahan, Jon Gruden, etc.), seeing a defensive-minded coach hired is an interesting concept.

It shows that Mark Davis, Al Davis’ son who is now in charge, will take a different tact than this father. Only time will tell whether this new path is the beginning of a Raiders resurgence or if Al Davis had the right idea the whole time.

First of all I'd like to say that CLARKCALLY,your comments & expectations are pretty reasonable & realistic but I can almost assure you that even if he makes the playoffs & happens to go one & out that he'll be gone as quick as Hue Jackson, who by the way I saw no problem with as far as a Head Coach. As far as your comments SERPHNX,from your mouth to the Davis kid's ears.I truly don't know why after every season,as a Raider fan who should be used to this nonsense,I'm still surprised when the Head Coach inevitably gets fired after the season, every freakin season.

Well, now it comes full circle.  We've had every personality as a Head Coach.  We've had the egomaniac (Hue), the incompotent (Shell, Callahan), the lost (White, Bugel).........maybe, just maybe, we can have a sense of order in leadership.  Time will tell if this is a good hire or not.  I'm very optimistic because besides the one year as DC in Denver there isn't much of a body of work.  He's got his work cut out for him because we've got a brutal schedule next season.  As a fan I'm going to be realistic and say the chances of us going to the Superbowl are slim but I think a playoff birth (at minimum) is an acceptable goal.  All I want him to do is:

1.  Get us to the freakin' playoffs.  With the offense, an off-season, and healthy guys there's no reason why we can't win the AFC West.
2.  Deal with the penalties.  We had more penalty yards than rushing yards in several of our games.  That's pathetic.
3.  Trim dead weight.  I think this will be Reggie's area where he really puts his stamp on this franchise.  OL will not have 4 false-start penalties a game and still have a job.
4.  Get the team ready to play.  The Raiders, in my opinion, only had 2 games where all 3 phases of the team played well (Jets and Chargers in San Diego).

i like the hiring..  we havnt had a defensive minded coach in over 50 years since Madden..    our defense has been bad in a long time even with having really good players on the defensive side

2 questions..   Can he turn things around by year 2  and will the raiders give him at least 3 years to do so ?

Raiders D had a terrible second half of the season, so MAYBE there's some logic to this hire. We'll see!

This is not good for the Broncos.  Our defense kept us competitive this past season.  Next year will be a disaster for the Broncos.

Just another Davis loser that'll fire head coaches each and evey year.

Should've just sold the franchise and let the new owner that's not related to any of the Davis's move the team as well. And maybe change that ugly team logo and those ugly black and white uniforms to something better. God, for as nice as Oakland, California is, the Raiders make it seem like it's one of the most trashies cities in the world.
