Bruce Allen has been hired to be Oakland's next coach (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

Dennis Allen, the former defensive coordinator of the Broncos, has been hired to be the next Raiders head coach, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman has confirmed (the news was originally reported by Fox’s Jay Glazer).

Reports out of Oakland suggested Allen had done well in his two interviews with the Oakland front office and that early favorite Winston Moss, the Packers assistant head coach, had not.

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

In his only season as the head of Denver’s defense, he helped lead a unit that propped up quarterback Tim Tebow for the last half of the season and allowed the Broncos to win the AFC West and beat the Steelers in the first round of the postseason.

Glazer writes that the two sides still have to negotiate a deal, but with Allen, the Raiders will get a coach whose defense finished in the bottom half of the league standings but who was lauded for the improvements his unit made in the final half of the season.

Although Moss -- who knows new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie quite well from their days together in Green Bay, leading to the speculation that he had a good chance of landing the job -- seemingly fell out of favor during the interviewing process, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg reportedly had a good shot at landing the job.

The Raiders also interviewed Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice and former Dolphins defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, while Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy declined his chance to interview.

Considering former owner Al Davis was such a big proponent of hiring offensive-minded coaches (see: Hue Jackson, Tom Cable, Lane Kiffin, Art Shell, Norv Turner, Bill Callahan, Jon Gruden, etc.), seeing a defensive-minded coach hired is an interesting concept.

It shows that Mark Davis, Al Davis’ son who is now in charge, will take a different tact than this father. Only time will tell whether this new path is the beginning of a Raiders resurgence or if Al Davis had the right idea the whole time.

Damn you Black holers! U keep takin our guys! This one hurts more than Jarvis Moss...U got a good coach hope he doesn't end up like Shanny. This guy has talent. But real talk Good Luck Dennis Allen it was great while thank you for your time here. All Broncos fans wish you youd've stay 2 more years but your talent is needed in the Black Hole. Raiders got a great coach and guy, if Seymour puts a hurtin on Tebow..Hats off, I can assume its a David Allen call since he watches film in the summers. Something Tebow hasn't done yet. But Dennis Allen is a big lost, Hearing Jack Del Rio as the DC is cool but I think Larry Coyer would be a great fit. He has the same kind of 4-3 blitz scheme but the Broncos are a MLB and DT away from a great LB group and a conversion back to the 3-4 and picking up a guy like Winston Moss...GO BRONCOS!

Oh yeah Why couldn't you take Tebow with him! Raiders running game would be harder to stop than clogged toilet!

"... will take a different tact..." The correct word is "tack" not "tact" when used in this manner.

Let's analyze this

1) this hire I don't believe has any "Raider heritage"
...potential

2) disclipline minded guy

...potential

3) to the author

did you seriously just write maybe "Al Davis had the right idea the whole time?"

not as much potential

-Seriously though- good for Mark... I hope he turns the ship around

This guy was an undersized safety in high school that went on to a pretty good career at Texas A&M. You don't do that if you don't understand how defense works. He comes from a school that has put several men into the NFL, including the great Tommy Maddox and Redskins strength coach Ray Wright. He'll be fine for the Raiders. If he is as much of a disciplinarian as mentioned in these comments then that will bode well for the quit-first Raiders mentality. They need toughness. So much talent on that team to think of quitting. Good move by Oakland.

Denver players thought of him as having been in the military or raised by someone that was. They said he is a strict disciplinarian. They said they had to go at full speed during practice and jog through walk-throughs. Well, one thing you can say is Reggie found the kind of coach that the Raiders needed most. Someone to get them disciplined. Someone to get this team to end their penchant for penalties. If he can do only that he can improve the teams record enough to win the division. Now, if he hires coaches that share that philosophy, and I can only assume he will, this will change the entire culture of the Raiders that's been permeated over the past few years. This is, in fact, what the organization needs. So, with that Reggie McKenzie has put his stamp on the direction of the Raiders.
I commend him for it. In the past it was same crap, different coach. Nothing ever changed. Fans got sick of seeing the same old Raiders no matter who the coach was. It may take time but I like the approach Reggie is taking. So far, so good.
