Report: Jack Del Rio could be next Broncos DC

With Dennis Allen now headed to Oakland as the next head coach of the Raiders, the Broncos now need to fill a big void at defensive coordinator. According to one report, Jack Del Rio could be the guy to take over for Allen in Denver.

Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network cites sources on Wednesday who believe that Del Rio has "emerged as a possible replacement" for Allen after he departs for the Raiders.

Del Rio was axed from Jacksonville in late November and since then's been ripped by former players, been basically called "not as good as Tom Coughlin" by his former owner, and he was reportedly mentioned as a candidate for the Chiefs job.

Defense is JDR's calling card (along with lumberjacking and leather jackets) and the Broncos could particularly make sense given the success he had in 2002 as John Fox's defensive coordinator with the Panthers. That year the Panthers finished first in yards per rushing attempt allowed, second in total yards allowed, fifth in points allowed and seventh in takeaways in the NFL.

Del Rio parlayed that success, along with his work as the Ravens linebackers coach before that, into becoming the replacement for Coughlin in Jacksonville. He only compiled a 68-71 record over nine years, but his defenses were typically stout. 2010 and 2011 were the exception, not the rule.

whoever is the broncos get as dc is very important. if they hire a good qb coach there is a cjance they can make tebow a decent quarterback. people can assumetha tebowwill never be a thrower, but that may not be the case. he is not stupid, it does not seem impossible to me that tebow cannot learn to identify defences and start to make some good plays. tebow was not the reason they lost. that defense lost the game. only a healthy manning would have been good enough to keep the in the game.

I think Jack is basically a good coach, but not a head coach.  He had a reputation in Jacksonville of leaving early and not being the first in.  That was a big difference after Coughlin, who came in early and stayed late.  Del Rio wasn't thought of as a hard worker.  There is little doubt he can be just as good a defensive guru in Denver as he was in Carolina and Jacksonville.

Del Rio sounds like he could be the next Wade Phillips...a good DC but a bad head coach. Him and Fox together could make out to be a good combination for the Broncos

Funny thing is, Del Rio is a lot like some pretty good coaches. It's just that that intensity and uncompromising focus needs to be reined in, but it's hard for these guys to learn to dial it down sometimes. Always on the prod, never able to let the people who work for you figure it out on their own. Impatience in a boss is a killer in the work environment. You've GOT to give guys time and space. Who and how much of each is the art of managing. First step, use the full-length mirror in the executive washroom.

Johnny, it's not as if either the NFC or the AFC East Divisions have it much better. One each versus none. (And no, I do not mean the Foot Whisperer.)

Wow..they're throwing some really big names around in the NFC West...lol
When Norv Turner is the best coach in the division...you've got issues. LOL
