Football is more popular than ever and Commissioner Roger Goodell deserves a lot of the credit for that. The owners apparently believe so too, as they extended Goodell's contract for five more years, through March of 2019.

The news, as first reported by Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal, means that Goodell will remain the NFL's commissioner through the 2018 season.

"It is a privilege for me to serve the NFL," Goodell said in a statement. "It is the only place I have ever wanted to work. I am grateful for the contributions and counsel of NFL owners in managing our league, the talented staff that supports us, and the players and coaches that perform their magic on the field. It is truly a team effort. I am eagerly looking ahead to the challenge of building on our momentum and doing all we can to improve our game for the fans and everyone that is part of our league."

Goodell took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006 and his original five-year contract was extended in 2009 through 2014.

"I speak on behalf of 32 NFL club owners in saying we are fortunate to have Roger Goodell as our commissioner," Falcons owner and Chairman of the Competition Committee Arthur Blank said. "Since becoming commissioner in 2006, the NFL -- already the leader in professional sports -- has gotten even stronger. As evidenced by this contract extension, we have great confidence in Roger's vision and leadership of the NFL. Our clubs, players and fans could not ask for a better CEO."

Highlights of Goodell's tenure include a 10-year labor agreement, a rise in popularity of the NFL, a new merchandise agreement with Nike that begins in 2012, bananas television ratings, and new television contracts. Additionally, the league has placed an emphasis on player safety and expanded the league's popularity to Europe.

The NFL, despite suffering through a lengthy lockout in the offseason, had one of the most successful years in league history in 2011. There's little question that professional football will continue to grow and Goodell, who's been a major part of the NFL's success over the past half decade, will continue to help it do so.

Roger Goodell gets five-year extension to 2019

I hear he has plans on adding to the Name of the League.

WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE.....ARENA STYLE

New Rules

Only 5 Rushing plays per half
Defenses can only attempt to block the ball and must remain no closer then 2 feet from any receiver until the ball is caught.
Quarterbacks have 1 minute to throw the ball
Defensive linemen will be flagged for unsportsmenlike conduct if they breathe on the QB
Time clock will no longer be required.  !st team to 50 is half time and game is over when the 1st team reaches 100
4 plays for ten yards is obsolete and now the number of plays will be 6 plays per possession.  Teams must score in 6 plays.
Pad will be no longer be required and tackling will be prohibited.  The player will be downed when the flag from his waist is pulled.
No players over 250lbs.

Goodell is a bum and the product he has is far worse than ever before.
Goodell has reversed the Salary Cap by hand picking his favorite teams and instructed REFs to DO ALL POSSIBLE to help those teams win.

What a sad day for NFL football.

WHAT?

Are you kidding me, Brady ruined the NFL?  How?  Because he's a good QB?  So are the Manning Bro's and Rodger's, did they ruin the NFL?  Goodell had to change the tackling rules, heck the NFL is already getting SUED by guy's long retired.  Then just yesterday I saw a spot on ESPN about how NFL players will fake a knee injury when the have a head injury cause they don't want to leave the game, they'll sit out a fe plays and go back in.  We live in a litigious society, Gooodell's job is to protect the owners - and he's doing a good job of that.  I HATE some of the calls and some of the fines that are given but...

I'd be willing to bet that he didn't get Mike Tomlin's vote! He ruined football along with Tom Brady.

Nowhere, but thats my point. The best players will play here regardless, so if a fan wants to watch the best players you have to watch the NFL. You could put a blind monkey in charge and the game would still be getting more popular for various reasons (most of which have to do with the spread and growth of technolgy).

Yes, he's done a good job of promoting and expanding the NFL to mainstream America.  Making the game softer has brought in mom's to their family rooms and their kids as well.  Mechandising has gone up, with this new tolerant audience.  However, it's the true NFL fans who have been alienated, but I guess we're now in the minority and not as important.  Either that, or we're taken for granted as the dick most of us will continue to watch.

The non-wearing of orange shoes was a major point in this decision.  Remember fans, we want an 18 games season.  Owners may like him, but players questionable and at least this fan thinks he has ruined football.  He has inprove player safety but wants 2 extra games added to a tough 16 game schedule.  By the way what are "bananas television ratings".  I must have a concussion because I do not remember that one.  I hope he was not told by cell phone!  And the celebration not over done!

I'd like to see which teams voted FOR and which teams didn't....  That'd be interesting.
