Football is more popular than ever and Commissioner Roger Goodell deserves a lot of the credit for that. The owners apparently believe so too, as they extended Goodell's contract for five more years, through March of 2019.

The news, as first reported by Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal, means that Goodell will remain the NFL's commissioner through the 2018 season.

"It is a privilege for me to serve the NFL," Goodell said in a statement. "It is the only place I have ever wanted to work. I am grateful for the contributions and counsel of NFL owners in managing our league, the talented staff that supports us, and the players and coaches that perform their magic on the field. It is truly a team effort. I am eagerly looking ahead to the challenge of building on our momentum and doing all we can to improve our game for the fans and everyone that is part of our league."

Goodell took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006 and his original five-year contract was extended in 2009 through 2014.

"I speak on behalf of 32 NFL club owners in saying we are fortunate to have Roger Goodell as our commissioner," Falcons owner and Chairman of the Competition Committee Arthur Blank said. "Since becoming commissioner in 2006, the NFL -- already the leader in professional sports -- has gotten even stronger. As evidenced by this contract extension, we have great confidence in Roger's vision and leadership of the NFL. Our clubs, players and fans could not ask for a better CEO."

Highlights of Goodell's tenure include a 10-year labor agreement, a rise in popularity of the NFL, a new merchandise agreement with Nike that begins in 2012, bananas television ratings, and new television contracts. Additionally, the league has placed an emphasis on player safety and expanded the league's popularity to Europe.

"I speak on behalf of 32 NFL club owners in saying we are fortunate to have Roger Goodell as our commissioner," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement, via Breer.

The NFL, despite suffering through a lengthy lockout in the offseason, had one of the most successful years in league history in 2011. There's little question that professional football will continue to grow and Goodell, who's been a major part of the NFL's success over the past half decade, will continue to help it do so.

Roger Goodell gets five-year extension to 2019

I echo all the unhappy fans with this news. What a joke.

Who made the decision on this? What is the NFL's standard procedure in place that makes the decision to extend the commissioners contract?
I'm asking because I don't know... anyone? I find no info on this in the article.

Shouldn't the players get a say in who gets voted in? The commissioners decisions impact them directly in their pocketbooks, playing time, etc.

This guy is slowly wrecking the league - FACT not opinion. I've stated before that if Goodell was the commissioner of boxing, there'd be no punching in the nose and there'd be no "unsuspected punches" because punching a "defenseless opponent" could lead to injury.

I bring up boxing as an example because VIOLENT CONTACT IS PART OF THE GAME! You can't just remove it. Players getting fined/suspended for:
1. TOUCHING the QB's helmet... literally
2. Hitting a "defensless receiver" too hard. This makes NO sense. Since when is someone on offense, DEFENSLESS??
3. Leading with your helmet ON DEFENSE ONLY! Offensive players do it all the time.
4. Hitting too low OR too high, depending on the position.

The NFL needs to consider INTENT when giving out these fines. It's is USUALLY clear (in replay anyway) when someone ducks thier head down and slams it into the ball carrier but don't fine/suspend people who are simply being reactionary in such a fast paced game. Maybe if Goodell PLAYED THE GAME, he could understand this but his ignorance is messing things up.

Can't hit a QB too high OR too low, you're getting hit, shoved, pushed aside as a D lineman as you're rounding the corner towards the QB and you need to find a TINY little window (again, not too high or too low) to tackle the QB with your 290 pound frame... OH, and don't TOUCH THE HELMET!

I'm taking the NFL on a year by year basis. If they continue to wreck the game and it gets to a point where the offense is just too pampered due to over regulation, I'll just drop it... and I KNOW I'm not the only one.

Roger Goodell gets five-year extension to 2019

A league on the verge of collapse?  You're joking right?  I dislike the NFL because it has gotten way to FANTASIZED with fantasy football and commercialized however this league could gobble the MLB, NHL and NBA up with the revenue it pulls in and that's a fact.  It is by far the most dominant sport in the country and the only reason they are looking to Europe is because they realize they can't get any bigger then they already are in the US.  Saying this league is collapsing or worse off because of him is just plain ignorant.  You the fan might complain about rule changes making the league wimpier but at the same time all the former players are suing the NFL for not taking action years ago.  All Goodell is doing is what should have been done a long time ago.  These guys get paid well, but your not paying a high enough price tag on those seats, dogs and beers to explain to these guys kids why the 70-100 bucks you paid on a given Sunday was worth their dad not being able to formulate a sentence 25 years down the line.

Roger Goodell gets five-year extension to 2019

The man should have been fired not extended. This horrible news for a league on the verge of collape. The NFl is worse now than ever under thr rudderless ship thta goodell drives. He favors certains teams, his penalty process is borderline illegal and makes no sense. He hates certain teams, does nothign about bad officials, and allows his own league to promote criminals. He the worst commissioner in hostory of pro sports. He allows team to cheat. He is a terrible person and terrible leader. A very sad for the NFL.

Roger Goodell gets five-year extension to 2019

I am ok with it unless he wants an 18 game regular season and 2 game preseason.  Everything is working well so leave that alone.  The only thing he should do now is expand the roster to 60 and the game day roster to 53 to give teams more depth to make it easier for teams to replace injured players who have concussions.  Also, we need a weekly inactive list for guys with minor injuries (non season ending injuries)  with a recovery time less than 8 weeks instead of them occupying a roster spot while they recover.

well, he doesn't suck as much as David Stern (which isn't saying much).  I don't understand why any of the NFL's success can be fairly attributed to him.  Seems more like the success is in spite of him.

Roger Goodell gets five-year extension to 2019

WOW there is a TON of casual football fans and/or know-nothings posting here.

Newsflash for you guys that have spent the past 2 years CRYING at Goodell

Roger Goodell has NEVER made a single Rule in the NFL.

The NFL Rules & Competition Committee is responsible for every change you people are yammering about.
Goodell is NOT a part of the process. Rich McKay & Jeff Fisher are Co-Chairs of this 7-9 man committee. The owners and this committee are the ones responsible.

Goodell enforces the rules he is told to enforce by these people.
He is not a law maker, just the executioner.

Stop being so foolish and ignorant everytime you post about Goodell changing this or that.
