Chuck Pagano only spent one season as an NFL coordinator with the Ravens, but it was enough to land him a head-coaching gig with the Indianapolis Colts, Mike Freeman confirmed Wednesday.

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

The team since announced the news and will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. CT on Thursday.

"It's difficult to leave the Ravens but I couldn't pass up on this great opportunity," Pagano said in a statement released by the team. "I'm just thrilled and so excited."

The news, as first reported by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, means that the Colts have now almost completely re-booted their organization.

Pagano took over as the Ravens defensive coordinator in 2011 when Greg Mattison left to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan. Pagano had previously been the Ravens secondary coach for two years after a season as the University of North Carolina's defensive coordinator under Butch Davis.

It was Davis who gave Pagano his first gig in the NFL, when he left Miami University to become the secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2001.

Pagano becomes the latest in a long line of folks working on the Baltimore defense to leave for a head-coaching gig in the NFL.

He also becomes yet another defensive-minded coach to take over the Colts, coming directly after Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell. Pagano, however, isn't from the "Tampa 2" school, and is likely to shift the defense to a 3-4 style, a la what the Ravens run.

Chuck Pagano hired as next Colts coach

Love reading these fools post from Baltimore.  Cry babies for life!  Irsay made a smart move getting out of that town.  Your name is Ravens2007 that cracks me up even more since that was the Indianapolis Superbowl.

Teams move! Get over it!

Chuck Pagano hired as next Colts coach

Have fun in the new Abyss of the NFL, Indy.  It couldn't have happened to a more deserving Franchise and Pathetic Owner.  The Irsay's are scumbags, the old man was a daily Drunk, and Jr. is a complete A-Hole, period.  You were pathetic from the time you left Baltimore until Peyton Manning, and now you are just going to throw him in the dumpster.

Indy has no No GM, no QB, no O-line, no Linebackers, no Safeties (that can stay healthy), no special teams, etc...  Andrew Luck is going to be the next Ryan Leaf, mark it down.

Here's to Indy being a bottom dweller for years to come.  10-15 years easily. Pagano was only a coordinator for 1 year, and he is not bringing Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, Ladarius Webb, Terrell Suggs, or an understanding of how to run a 4-3, he has been in a 3-4 system for years.

Freeney isn't going to be a good OLB in a 3-4 because he doesn't know how to cover the pass, period....

Chuck Pagano hired as next Colts coach

Just as many said Peyton was the OC for the Colts, Ray Lewis is the DC for the Ravens. It will be interesting to see what Pagano can do without talent and a Ray Lewis led defense.

Chuck Pagano hired as next Colts coach

not too many past stars make good coaches???

peyton has been the offensive coordinator for years...not only is/was he one of the best qbs ever, he is/was one of the best COACHES EVER. thats pretty ignorant to thing peyton cant coach or work with anybody since hes been doing it for years

I LOVE the hire. people keep commenting that the new colts coach is part of the ed reed and ray lewis system but... tomlin and harbaugh had no head coaching experience and i think this hire is perfect for the rest of the house cleaning they are doing in indy

im excited.  they will get a top qb, start drafting solid d players and add an offensive lineman along with another reciever. the GM pick along with the selection of the new coach is NOTHING what the idiot media predicted. that is the key.  irsay knows he had to start completely over and i love that he is hiring solid people that fit the indianapolis colts and not just big name retreads.  little by little the denial of other teams and their fans  pretending the colts wont be a force without peyton manning are going to get scarier and scarier.

while the end of brady, rothleisburger and brees will be coming to the horizon sooner than you think...the colts will be the team ready to take over AGAIN.  they will be ready when the other collapses start

i love irsay not following the script everybody thinks is going to happen or were going to happen. GOD ALMIGHTY this is so much better than say...hiring a mike malarkey... not only a past bust as a head coach but a bore as well....with names like brad childdress???? and other flops that were supposed tops on the list the media reporting. you might as well leave caldwell as the coach if you are going to go the way of the retread.

not only are MOST of the indy fans happy but i think the players are very hungry with this hire and happy as well. i think peyton dons the blue longer than you think too. it may not be as a player but in another form.   i also think peyton retires and all this talk of peyton to...fill in the blank...some team...  is like the media and who they thought the colts were going to hire as their coach

Chuck Pagano hired as next Colts coach

Well, it was thatt the Colts needed some sort of shakeup on defense this year.  For the players to have an attitude that they were always used to playing with a Manning-led offense means that there was a definite attitude problem.  Who knows what Pagano's success/failure prospects are?  Now that the drama of the choice of a new coach (and ensuing staff change) are over, everyne now holds their collective breath to see what wil happen with Manning.  It's only six months until trianing camp opens.
