Report: Bucs want to hire Schiano; Jerry Gray out

Greg Schiano apparently has been offered the Tampa Bay job (US Presswire).By Josh Katzowitz

While the Buccaneers coaching search has turned somewhat disastrous -- a flip-flop rejection from Oregon’s Chip Kelly will do that for you -- it seems like Tampa Bay also is getting closer to naming their next head coach.

And that new head coach is reportedly Rutgers coach Greg Schiano.

620 WDAE in Tampa reported (via the Tampa Bay Tribune) that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano also is a candidate, and ESPN's Adam Schefter later reported that team plans to hire Schiano and that the two sides are working out a contract agreement.

The Newark Star Ledger reported earlier this month that Schiano wouldn't have an interest in coaching in the NFL. Schiano was a secondary coach for the Bears from 1996-98, and he's been at Rutgers for the past 11 years. In the past, he's turned down potential head coaching opportunities at the University of Michigan and the University of Miami.

But like the Chip Kelly story, this potential hire has seemingly come ouf nowhere.

As CBSSports.com’s Will Brinson wrote Wednesday, former Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman and Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski were reported to haved received second interviews with the team. On Thursday, Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray told the Tampa Bay Times that he’s officially out of the running.

"Told me they were going in a different direction," Gray told the newspaper.

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

Gray found out he was no longer in the running during an early-morning call from Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik, and the paper also reported that a source said the team is planning to continue paring down the coaching candidate list today.

Other than Chudzinski, Sherman and Gray, the team also was connected to Marty Schottenheimer, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips (who pulled his name out of the search a few weeks ago) and Packers quarterback coach Tom Clements.

Gray also had been a candidate for the Colts job that went to Chuck Pagano on Wednesday.

Ole Dey Grey has an ok point, but really,  who's gonna want a job at Rutgers when the Big Nationwide East and probably gonna lose an automatic bid anyway. Rutgers will just have to settle for another mediocre co-ordinator...

i think greg should stay with rutgers, he'll be appreciated there, while the bucs after 2 or 3 years will discard him for the next flavor if he's not 10-6 or 12-4 + playoff success or superbowl win! he should stay where he's built a great football program and graduates young men with character!

Report: Bucs want to hire Schiano; Jerry Gray out

As both a Rutgers alumni/fan and lifelong Bucs fan, I think that Rutgers is getting the better end of this. Schiano only had 1 big year, and that's because he had Ray Rice, Brian Leonard and a big time defense. Other than that it's been nothing but dissapointment. And I don't care about winning bowl games in Canada and Yankee stadium. I'm talking about top 25 finishes and BCS games....which he never came close to. Combine that with the long history of college coaches going to the NFL and failing, and it's a recipe for disaster. At least Rutgers will finally have a chance to get a big time coach.

The Bucs need to stop looking for a college coach and hire a proven NFL coach. The only two we can choose from that will not embarrass us now as 1. Marty Schottenheimer and 2. Mike Sherman. Shott is a PROVEN winner. Sherman will definately get our guys playing. The other coaches are decent, but we would still go to the games wondering WHAT TEAM WILL SHOW UP. For my money it's 1. Marty or 2. Mike.

What the heck are the Bucs thinking?  Don't they know the sucess rate for college coaches becoming pro coaches is very low.  Look at Saban and Spurrier!!!  A fan since their inception in 1976, so I have been aware of bad moves, but one would think they would know better after 36 years!!!!  What was wrong with Marty Shottenheimer?  Call me a very unhappy Buc fan.

because he is the only man in history to ever make Rutgers a decent program.  Because he lead Miami as a DC wtih GREAT defenses.  Because he was an awesome DB coach at Penn St.  Because he is a no-nonsense, stress the fundementals, organized guy.

Stupid question really.

Did the Patriots fans ask why they wanted to hire belicheck after he failed in Cleveland?

I know Gruden has been there and done that, but I would have pushed hard to bring him back in there.  There is alot of good young talent on that Bucs team and they need a good experienced coach.  Schiano is not a good choice with all of the other options out there. Oh well.  I don't like the Bucs so I really could care less, but just seems like an odd hire for a team with so much young talent, needing experience
