John Harbaugh speaks out on Scoreboard-Gate

Cundiff

By Josh Katzowitz

Since Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff badly hooked the game-tying 32-yard field goal that would have sent last Sunday’s AFC title game vs. the Patriots to overtime, there have been a rash of conspiracy theories about why Cundiff sprinted to the field as the play-clock wound down and looked out of sorts while missing the kick.

One report said Cundiff wasn’t paying attention and that, although the Ravens coaching staff called for him six times, he didn’t respond until it was almost too late. Another said there was a discrepancy between which down the scoreboard displayed and which down the officials were counting and that Cundiff thought it was third down when it was actually fourth down.

Some believed somehow the Patriots had cheated and forced Cundiff (by sheer willpower or telepathic mind bullets, I suppose) to blow the biggest kick of his career.

Frankly, Ravens coach John Harbaugh is tired of the conversation, which is why he released this statement from the Senior Bowl (via ESPN.com): "Any suggestion that the wrong down information was a deliberate effort to affect the outcome of the game is nonsense.”

Harbaugh might have felt compelled to act after Ravens kicking specialist Randy Brown made mention of Spygate during a recent radio interview and how you couldn’t automatically acquit the Patriots of cheating.

“The scoreboard was one down behind, the entire last three plays, from what we understand,” Brown told 94 WIP radio in Philadelphia. Asked if he thought the mistake was intentional, he said, “I don’t think you can rule anything out in New England, can you?”

Said Harbaugh: “We knew what the down and distance were on our last series. The scoreboard was not a factor for us."

Hopefully, Harbaugh’s statement will calm down the conspiracy theorists. Somehow, though, I doubt it.

John Harbaugh speaks out on Scoreboard-Gate

Hey Mr. Katzowitz,
Learn the friggin rules before you write such a joke of a story. There ain't nothing like you $chitt stirrers trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

The scoreboard is NOT run by the officials but in fact run by someone hired by the home team. The officials control the time, down and distance from right on the field. They have nothing to do with the scoreboard. There's these little sticks that represent D&D right on the field.

Any coach or player thats watching the scoreboard for any reason other than called replays is STUPID!!

Do some research before you writew this crap, gawd you must be desperate for a story...ironic considering its Superbowl week.

Your just plain lazy.

John Harbaugh speaks out on Scoreboard-Gate

Wiki has a rather extensive article on spygate which is very damning to the Pats.  The reality is that NFL fined them because the evidence was so clear but then destroyed it all because it was probably much worse than what was made public.  The press and the fans who pay money should have been able to see all the evidence and judge for themselves.  It was a slap on the wrist and a whitewash.  The Pats trophies ahould have been taken away and given to the losers and Anyone involved at the coaching level should have been expelled, like they do at West Point when you cheat.

@Glosso...  spygate is old news and the only people who hold on to it, like an old stuffed bear they had as a kid, are just jealous that during that span they won 3 superbowls not just 1 and are very jealous of it.  Cry all you want but it wont change the fact that they have the rings to prove they were there and the Panthers, Rams and Eagles dont have those rings.  Brady...hall of famer right now, BB...hall of fame coach right now.  Records...they have many of them broken.  Practically the last dynasty the NFL will probably have and spygate is just a blip in the past that in a few years wont even be remembered by anyone except those who wont let go.  Angered by the fact that they "cheated", when it was a blown out of proportion non-issue.  Maybe every team didnt record...maybe they did, we dont know for sure but you cant say they didnt just like anyone cant say they did.  Remember Stick-em, Jets were accused of stealing signals before the Patriots were,  piping extra crowd noise into domes have came up in the past and other instances where a team tried to gain a competitive advantage over the other team has been part of football since it became commercial back in the 60's.  Its going to be a really good superbowl between 2 teams that match up pretty well, maybe you can catch the game once you return from the past and get over it.

I always thought the clock operator was an NFL referee.  Anybody know for sure?  As far as spygate goes only the haters keep mentioning it I mean I let it go in "08".
