Chip Kelly's brief flirtation with the Buccaneers job was just that: brief. Reports emerged on Sunday night that Kelly would take the Tampa Bay gig. But while most of the world was sleeping, the situation was flopped and Kelly bailed.

Unless he didn't; Kelly went on KUJZ in Oregon and said that he never accepted the Bucs gig and that he never "flip-flopped."

"The only decision I ever made was to not accept the job," Kelly said, via Rob Moseley of the Oregon Register-Guard. "I never changed my mind; I never committed to the job and then flip-flopped.

Latest Coaching News, Rumors

"It was nothing more than, I'd like to hear what they had to say."

Well, the Bucs are unlikely to comment on the situation, especially since they "found their man" in Rutgers Greg Schiano. So it's unlikely that Kelly can be proven incorrect. And he did admit that he talked with Tampa Bay, and that he came upon their interest via Oregon's Athletic Director Rob Mullens, who was approached by the Bucs.

"They presented to me what their plan was for Tampa Bay, and it was extremely attractive," Kelly said. "But at the end of the day ... I got into coaching because of the relationships. And the relationships I have with the current coaches on our staff and the players was the underlying reason why I came back."

Kelly also pointed out that the Buccaneers offered him a raise. What he didn't point out is that he absolutely has to say that he never took this job. If he were to say that he took the gig, it'd be an utter disaster for recruiting. His current players would wonder how close he was to leaving, and other coaches would be able to play the possibility about Kelly leaving against him. And they would.

There are ample reports of Kelly taking the job and then bailing that emerged from this whole erstwhile debacle. But neither the Bucs or Kelly have any motivation to confirm them, so it's unlikely that you'll hear any story too different from what Kelly offered on Thursday.

And we have one report from the person in the room that says it ain't true.  CBS has squat.

Chip Kelly says he never took Buccaneers job

These CBS hacks just got the story wrong and don't like to admit it.

If Kelly accepted the job he would be in Tampa Bay right now.  Am I missing something?

Chip Kelly says he never took Buccaneers job

Kelly probably realized that the NFL would be totally close-minded to his system, from the front office to the media to fellow coaches.  He would have been mercilessly hammered for every loss, and every win would have been trivialized.  For example, Steve Spurrier's "Fun and Gun" offense was deemed a failure in Washington, but Spurrier won more games than the coach who preceeded him with basically the same roster his first year.  So, how is that a failure?

It's going to take a few more teams being successful with a New England-type hybrid attack before anyone in the NFL will have a mind that is half-open enough to take the spread seriously.  Either that, or Tim Tebow is going to have to go off the charts in Denver.  Either way, the time is not right for a spread coach to go to the NFL.

Chip Kelly says he never took Buccaneers job

Although, I think it is really great that Kelly didn't become the head coach of the Bucs (as a Bucs fan, I would not have enjoyed his spread option), I can almost see the writing on the wall. With Oregon's ascent, the media will soon have a hard on for him and try to bury the Oregon program for some less than above board dealings with recruits. This is something every school does. It amazes me who the media goes after.

WHO CARES??? We still going to be hearing about this next week also? Does anyone that lives outside of Tampa or Oregon give a damn about this? Highly unlikely. In other news, the chicken did indeed cross the road.

Chip Kelly says he never took Buccaneers job

Isn't this really old news by now?  Does it really matter whether Kelly ever "accepted" the job at Tampa Bay, since he is definitely not going there in the first place?  Who really cares anymore to find out how serious Kelly's "flirtation" with the NFL was?  It's over, the original reporting was wrong, for whatever reason he's staying at Oregon.  Tampa Bay has certainly moved on, so should the media.  Don't waste any more time or cyberspace confirming/denying anything about this storyline.

Well said, lee3022.  Far too little accountability in journalism these days.  Anyone who throws out every rumor they hear can call themselves a sports writer apparently.

Chip Kelly says he never took Buccaneers job

I forgot to ask; How did the Trojans fair against the #1 team in the country the last two years? The ducks lost. Are you in a position to talk about it trick? Are you telling me the win on a missed feild goal against Oregon means USC would have beat LSU or Auburn? This is interesting.... So you talk crap the whole time about everyone. Okay, I'm done.. Answered my own question there. Thanks anyway.

I love how U$C dynasty appears on every thread related to the Ducks just to hate and whine like a U$C fan would do. Have you familiarized your sad little brain with the term HATER? The kicker missed. wow. Great win finaly. How big of a deal. The trojans won a game against the ducks. I am proud of you. Get over it and stop trolling Jacky. How do I know you aren't actually a duck fan trying reverse psychology on me? You follow the ducks like you want to deepthroat the whole team and are supposedly a Trojan fan? Get fkut
