Irsay, Peyton issue statement: No 'hard feelings'

Last night we chronicled the third step in the Jim Irsay-Peyton Manning semi-feud that began out of an interview Manning did on Monday. Irsay called him a politician and Manning responded by clarifying his comments and backing away from the center of the storm.

Now the two have, quite oddly, issued a joint statement. (You'll remember these from the halcyon days of the lockout.)

"We would like to dispel any misperception that there might be any hard feelings between us," Manning and Irsay said in a joint statement released by the team. "Since 1998, we have enjoyed a great relationship, based upon mutual respect and trust. We have always been able to talk and address matters we’ve faced over the years, not just as owner and player, but as friends.

"We had a long talk today and we want to assure Colts fans everywhere that we are both committed to maintaining our close relationship and to working together through any challenges the future may bring."

Now, without applying an ill-fitting metaphor, doesn't this kind of sound like parents addressing kids right before a divorce? ("We still love each other, but ...")

The Manning Saga

Maybe it is -- if during the long talk Manning and Irsay basically acknowledged that Peyton's going elsewhere, there's a good chance they've found some resolution to their issues. Or maybe Irsay doesn't know if he's paying Peyton or not quite yet; it just seems obvious that he won't.

Regardless, while this is a weird move, it's also a smart one: the NFL media is descending on Indianapolis in three days and the timing of Irsay's barbs on Twitter were terrible, particularly given how omnipresent he'll have to be with the NFL's biggest party going down in his city for the next seven days.

This statement should do at least a little bit to quell all the questions about the relationship he has with Manning these days.

Irsay, Peyton issue statement: No 'hard feelings'

When Brady sat out for a year, Pats did very well. They have much better coaching and always a ton of weapons for Brady or whomever. Manning played 209 straight games and was in playoffs 9 of 10 years. Both QB's are great, but for many different reasons. Peyton also just simply broke records, didn't chase them like a madman. Just happened without trying to prove something. He's just a very natural talent who has been seriously injured and simply trying to get better. He's also very intelligent, sees the writing on the wall and is most likely at this moment having serious discussions with his wife and family. He doesn't need money, nor does he need to be hit repeatedly until it's too late. He covered so many flaws in the system, it showed when he was not active. Time for the big rebuild, so do it. Quit delaying and making everyone squirm. Not fair to the players, fans and most important not fair to Peyton. Run Peyton Run.

Aliens509...I'm not a big time Colts fan but attend a game every now and then and disagree,Matt Painter led the Colts most of the season and the Colts were the worst team in the league and the stands were full.Bob Irsay ran the team pre Manning and that was the biggest problem with the Colts. When Harbaugh was the QB they were competetive and sold out many a game and almost made the SB before losing to the Steelers.Yes Manning is very important but not the only reason their are Colts fans.

Irsay, Peyton issue statement: No 'hard feelings'

I'm a big Colts fan and of course no one should be making tons of millions by not playing a single game BUT that tons of millions is nothing compared to tons and tons and tons of millions the Colts will end up losing once Peyton is gone. I think Irsay is forgetting what the Colts was like before Manning came into the picture. I think Irsay forgot why they left Baltimore in the first place. If Manning is not a Colts next season, guess they'll be losing lost of fans too. Can't wait to see Irsay's face when the stadium is half full. I think Irsay is putting all his eggs in one basket with Luck.

It's not about Irsay not paying Peyton this year.  He should not pay him 28 million to watch.  What he should do is handle the whole issue with more class.  Peyton Manning is Indianapolis Colts Football.  Irsay ran around telling his boyfriend, Rob Lowe, inside info that he and Lowe are too dumb to keep to themselves.  Peyton is aware of his pending situation, and he commented on the low morale around the facility.  Irsay is a moron, and he should feel lucky that Peyton didn't say that!  I will say it for him.

I'm A big Peyton fan, but even I can see paying a guy millions of dollars to not play just can't happen.  He signs one of the biggest contracts ever and hasn't played since.  I can see where Irsay is coming from here.

Good popint there Gosox. With the older Giants SB teams, receivers were their wekest links except for Bavaro. It was the D and running that were the keys
