This much we know: Tebow's got the starting gig heading into training camp. (Getty Images)

Back on January 17, three days after the Broncos' 2011 season ended with a playoff loss to the Patriots, executive vice president of football operations John Elway said that Tim Tebow "has earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp next year." It's a curious comment in that Elway acknowledges Tebow's against-all-odds accomplishments in 2011 but with the clear understanding that should he struggle early, the Broncos are free to find a starter elsewhere.

Cornerback Champ Bailey, one of Tebow's biggest supporters during the season, even admitted that the former Heisman Trophy winner "still has a lot to prove."

“He’s proven he can win some tough games," Bailey said shortly after the Broncos lost in the playoffs. "Now it’s just being consistent. One thing about him, he’s going to work at it. And I’m behind him 100 percent.”

Whether Elway is that committed to Tebow beyond training camp is another matter. Either way, Denver has quarterback on the to-do list; Kyle Orton was released during the season and Brady Quinn will be a free agent in March.

"We will be in the market to find more quarterbacks," Elway said according to the Denver Post's Jeff Legwold. "That's our approach with Tim being our starter as we go to training camp, that we'll look at free agency and the draft."

We've written previously on the available free-agent quarterbacks who could piqued Denver's interest, but this is about more than sheer talent. There's also the little issue of public opinion; Tebow is insanely popular among Broncos fans and as Orton found out, working conditions can quickly deteriorate for those who get between Tebow and the starting job.

That reality aside, Elway is insistent that there will be competition at every job -- including quarterback -- leading up to the 2012 season.

"Anybody who comes in at any position is going to think they have a chance to compete," he said. "Any free agent or anybody that comes in here when we start training camp is going to be competing for jobs. Obviously with Tim's reputation, if the guy is afraid to come in and compete for that job, then maybe he's not the right guy."

Just ask Orton.

For now, Tebow's the guy although the depth chart appears to be written in pencil. If recent history has taught us anything, however, it's that we should never ever underestimate the Power of Tebow.

Elway: Broncos in the market for more QBs

sure is a good thing elway had a strong arm ... not the smartest butter knife....

ya friggin think JE? this is a good year for QB's and there should be no reason that Denver should not be able to find another bust QB in the draft!

also, lets not forget donovan mcnabb is still out there and after all they could pick up garcia or ryan leaf to keep the good times rolling... hmmm makes me think???? what about jimmy walker/ tall skinny can run errr i disgress just sign peyton hillis and go with the wishbone and no QB!who frickin cares about a 6-10 team?

Manning mentoring Tebow is not a very good idea.  Certainly, Tebow needs to improve his passing and ability to read defenses, etc. but Manning and Tebow are pretty much polar opposites as qbs.  Tebow is never going to be a qb like Manning.  If you go with Tebow, you have to adjust your offense to fit his unique skill set.  Allow him to do the things that he does well, and expand from there.  Certainly, developing him into a viable (not great) pro style qb should be part of an ultimate goal, but that is likely a few years away.  For now, Denver should commit to a hybrid offense that includes an expanded spread option influence.

Of course they're in the market. You certainly don't think Brady Quinn is going to be running the option at any point do you?
Even if they work on getting Tebow to be more of a pro set QB, they're still going to require quite a few plays with him running the ball.

Kind of making a story out of nothing.  Of course Denver will be in the market for more qbs...as it is Tebow is the only qb on the roster going into next season.  Nothing has changed.  Tebow is the qb as long as he continues to give the team it's best chance to win.  If he starts out 0-4 next year, someone else will get a shot.

If the Broncos and Elway were smart they would go get Peyton Manning and let him mentor Tebow for the next two years.  Either way they would have proven QB who can win immediately and if in the first year, PM tells them that Tebow is not going to be who they think, they can then go out and draft a rookie prospect to learn for a year or two under Manning and/or get a free agent to back up Manning until he retires.

Denver looking for QBs..................big suprise.  Elway knows he'll go nowhere with what is currently on the team.

I am from the central ohio area where Brady Quinn went to high school. Ive watched this kid for years now and i am also a broncos fan. NEVER HAS ONE TEAM HAD 2 QBS THAT CANNOT THROW A 15 YARD OUT ROUTE! Period. Neither of Denvers QBs are worth a damn. Should trade the farm, get RG3 so Denver can have another overrated nonthrowing QB. YAYY.

Don't they still have Brady Quinn? I thought he was a can't miss QB prospect just a few years ago?
free agent, he will likely leave, wont be shocked if he ends up in Washington.
