Report: Browns now want Peyton Hillis back

2011 wasn't Peyton Hillis' year. But maybe 2012 already got him clear of the Madden Curse, as the Browns reportedly want to re-sign the running back, despite his injuries during the previous season.

That's according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, who reports that Hillis "worked his way back into the team's good graces" over the final six weeks of the season, and that Cleveland would like him back in 2012.

Hillis struggled with injuries, a belief that he was soft, playing time, and all the other things that accompany the Madden Curse in 2011. After busting out for 1,177 yards in 2011, Hillis took a major step back in 2012, rushing for just 587 yards in 10 games, nine of which he started.

At one point, he was the embodiment of Cleveland athletics, a blue-collar guy whose style of running fit perfectly with the way Cleveland sees itself. Which is precisely why the Browns kept saying they'd re-sign him.

That they're now interested in locking up Hillis again is interesting, but perhaps the timing of the interest is obvious, given how much cheaper  Hillis will be to sign than he was a year ago at this time.

His injury isn't the problem, his attitude is.  If you combined Hillis' body with Ogbonnaya's worth ethic and mental capacity, you'd have a HoF running back.

This should be a no-brainer for Holmgren to bring Hillis back because he'll be cheaper, more motivated to be able to sign a bigger and better deal, and because this kid is a workhorse.  I don't think that Hillis had a major step backward in 2011 - if you look at his statistics for 2011 he was putting up yards at a higher pace than he was in 2010 but he got injured which shortened his season significantly.  The Browns rode Hillis hard in 2010 just like Tampa Bay rode Cadillac Williams into the ground his first season.  The rookies' bodies are not conditioned to play a 16 game season so when they do play a 16 game season position players like Hillis (among MANY others) had a wheel come off.  If I were Hillis I would test free agency and force the Browns to tend him a signing sheet or be compensated by the signing team with a draft pick.  Hillis is a STEAL for any other team in the league to steal away from the Browns for little cost.  Hillis looks like the kind of running back that Bill Belichick would like to employ who could function as both a running back and a fullback.

Please, don't sign him!!

I've been a Steelers fan all of my life and I would take Hillis in a heartbeat! I'd love to see him in Pittsburgh's black and gold next year, where the fans would appreciate him.

I'm a diehard Browns fan and you guys kill me with how you keep backing Colt McCoy. The guy has a little girl arm and can't make NFL throws, especially in windy and cold weather games in Cleveland... We need to draft RGIII at #4. What don't you guys understand about that? There's a reason why Colt slipped until late in the 3rd Round in the NFL Draft. WE NEED a quarterback. Some of you are so blind, it's sickening.

Report: Browns now want Peyton Hillis back

Am I missing something here?  This article says that "Hillis too a major step back in 2012, rushing for just over 587 yards in 10 games, nine of which he started."  My question is, it is January 31, 2012 today.  How did Hillis play 10 games in 2012?  I mean I'm just a little more than a casual football fan and I did just wake up from a nap, but please tell me that I didn't sleep an entire year while napping?

If so you are the ultimate napper. My props to you in doing that.

Since you look like your new here. Its common for these morons at CBSSports to fuck up spelling. While they all lack any sports intelligence, majority of them lack the knowledge of proof reading what they write. Pretty much every day, some times multiple times a day. You will notice how awful they are in writing.

The Browns know what they have in Hillis and need to keep him. I hope they fous on getting a #1 outside reciever and some decent O line guys for the R side. Colt is the guy they need to give the keys to but he needs playmkers who can scare the opposition. They need to draft a nasty ball hawk linebacker with some speed on the outside...take guys who have brains and want to win....team guys with killer instincs.

With Hillis and a healthy Brandon Jackson the Browns can focus on the rest of the teams needs, Hardesty is a bum and needs returned to the hospital he was born in. The Browns need to get Blackmon with 4 Nick Perry22, then take Minnifield in second round, Jake Bequette in third. Keep Colt surround him with great playmakers, not lead the league in drops, get Steinbach 100% and win some games. Maybe take Case Keenum or Kellen Moore with a late round pick, and sign some free agent lineman...
