Rodgers 'embarrassed' by NFC effort in Pro Bowl

A. Rodgers said he was embarrassed by the NFC's players effort in the Pro Bowl (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

The Pro Bowl, as we all know, is a joke.

We tried making some suggestions last year (um, hello, running clock?!?), and this year, we described why the changes the NFL did make didn’t improve the quality of the game.

Not only do we see this game as an exercise in irrelevance, mostly because the players’ effort is lacking, but apparently so does Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

During his regular appearance on ESPN Milwaukee, Rodgers said  the NFC players “embarrassed themselves” during the game last Sunday. He also said he was "disappointed in the lack of pride.”

Said Rodgers: “I feel like there should be some pride involved in a game like that, and I was just surprised by some of the efforts of some of the guys. This was my second Pro Bowl. (I) played in the one in 2010. It was down in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. I felt that that one had a lot more energy.

“The AFC side obviously had more energy. I think they were upset about the second onside kick (called by Packers coach Mike McCarthy), and at that point they played a lot harder than we did. But even in the early going, they were playing definitely harder than we were.”

Obviously, there’s no reason for the Pro Bowl selections to go all out and risk injury, and the NFL enforces special rules in the game to decrease those chances as well. But when the defensive linemen are basically shaking hands with the offensive linemen each time the ball is snapped and when would-be-tacklers let ball-rushers run right by them for touchdowns, you have to ask yourself, what’s the point of watching this?

And maybe now Rodgers is asking himself, what’s the point of playing?

Did not have to read the article, did not have to read the various posts  -  only going by what I saw on Sunday.    That had to be the MOST "putrid" exhibition of football I have ever seen in my life.

Unbelievable - and may not watch another "All-Pro" game again !   The guys who went should not accept a penny !!!!

He's not that upset at the loss to the Giants at home. It just gave him more time to do the "Raji" and the Discount Double Check!!

This game's been a joke for years. Just another paycheck and vacation for the players!

There's nothing on the line except the winners each get 50k and the losers each get 25k.  The game is simply an acknowledgement to the players and a "must be present to win" paid vacation.  That's all it can be and all it should be.   The risk of injury is always present in football moreso than other sports where an all-star game can be utilized with incentives such as home field advantages for a conference/league etc.  Perhaps Rodgers may have been alluding to having to play with other players with hangovers or whatever.&nb
sp; And yes--- there is absolutely no incentive for a fan to watch the game unless said fan is vacationing where the game is played.

Do the players OWE the fans a competitive game when their contracts are NOT guaranteed and the "Pro Bowl" is a glorified scrimmage? I don't blame the players at all for mailing in their performance rather than risk their LIVELIHOOD on an exhibition game. The game of football is a brutal game at the NFL level. A career ending injury at an exhibition game would be tragic.

Maybe he's just still upset and 'embarrassed' by that loss to the Giants..

Nobody tries in the Pro Bowl. Everybody on the planet knows that. This guy is just making himself look dumb.. So you're upset about losing at home to NY,.Get over it. Nobody tries to win this pointless exhibition game, so quit calling out your teammates who dont give a damn. For real.

I don't remember the year, but the last Pro-bowl that was fun to watch was when Bill Cowher coached the AFC. They could have kicked the xtra point to tie, but they chose to go for 2 for the win. He said later that the players talked about it before thet game and that they agreed that if they were in a situation where they could tie or win, they would go for the win. It was a very entertaining game.

I am not sure what the payouts were at the time, but I think it was 50K per player on the winning team and 20K per player on the losing team.

There has to be a way for it to mean something. The MLB uses it to decide who gets the home field for the World Series. I like that.

The NHL is a joke, if you ask me, but the skills competition is great. That's the best part of All Star weekend. The game is awful. Nobody plays defense, so all you see is the best scorers out there. I would like to see the best possible team out there, with a checking line, some 2 way forwards, etc. I would like them to pick the all star team like they do the Olympic team, but that's just my opinion. That would make the game better to watch.

I don't have any answers, but the all star games are almost a huge waste of time and money for everyone IMO

The came is a joke!  They should go back to the old days when the Super Bowk champs played a team of college All-stars.  Cancel the pro bowl and start the super bowl champs-college all-star game again. Just do it during the preseason like they use to.   The last game between these two teams ended with the Super Bowl champs Pittsburgh Steelers beating the All-Stars 24-0 in a rain shortened game. (flooded field).

What to do about the Pro- Bowl???? Make it a 3 day event.  Day 1 -  Beach Vollyball.  Day 2 - Golf outing scramble style.  Day 3 a football skills challenge (sort of like the combine).  Add the totals from the 3 days and see who wins AFC or NFC.  All players must play in all 3 events.  Who wouldn't love watching some of these guys try to golf????
