Rodgers 'embarrassed' by NFC effort in Pro Bowl

A. Rodgers said he was embarrassed by the NFC's players effort in the Pro Bowl (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

The Pro Bowl, as we all know, is a joke.

We tried making some suggestions last year (um, hello, running clock?!?), and this year, we described why the changes the NFL did make didn’t improve the quality of the game.

Not only do we see this game as an exercise in irrelevance, mostly because the players’ effort is lacking, but apparently so does Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

During his regular appearance on ESPN Milwaukee, Rodgers said  the NFC players “embarrassed themselves” during the game last Sunday. He also said he was "disappointed in the lack of pride.”

Said Rodgers: “I feel like there should be some pride involved in a game like that, and I was just surprised by some of the efforts of some of the guys. This was my second Pro Bowl. (I) played in the one in 2010. It was down in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. I felt that that one had a lot more energy.

“The AFC side obviously had more energy. I think they were upset about the second onside kick (called by Packers coach Mike McCarthy), and at that point they played a lot harder than we did. But even in the early going, they were playing definitely harder than we were.”

Obviously, there’s no reason for the Pro Bowl selections to go all out and risk injury, and the NFL enforces special rules in the game to decrease those chances as well. But when the defensive linemen are basically shaking hands with the offensive linemen each time the ball is snapped and when would-be-tacklers let ball-rushers run right by them for touchdowns, you have to ask yourself, what’s the point of watching this?

And maybe now Rodgers is asking himself, what’s the point of playing?

HAHA - Not sure if you meant that sarcastically or not ColAttar. Brees did seriously dislocate his elbow in pro bowl a few years ago!! I knew the game was a joke when Brandon Marshall caught his 4th TD pass. The guy caught 6 TD's in 16 games this year for god sakes!!!

Drew Brees drop kicking for a PAT? This was ridiculous. Give them the honor of being selected a pro-bowler, but please DO NOT PLAY THE GAME. I am one of the few the NFL has lost as a big fan anyway. I think the NFL is boring compared to the college game-no comparison.
I totally agree with Rodgers.

I heard the Pro Bowl used to be the Super Bowl Champions vs. All-Stars from the rest of the teams. That sounds SO much more interesting!

This game has stunk for years and with all the money that is involved in these players I CANNOT believe they still play this thing. Get rid of it. Could you imagine if a player like Drew Brees dislocated an elbow?

Take off the pads make it a flag football game. When you are out or done for the game i.e back ups in this one are startes, go into the stands and sign autographs for the fans, get the fans in the game. To be honest I could care less about effort in the pro bowl. They are there as a last hooorah for the season sort of a come out wave you hat and go back type game. Show the fans you apprectiate them.

I understand that teams do not want to risk injury to their best players. Now the N.F.L. needs to understand that the fans do not want to watch a Pro Bowl like this one. I watched about 10 minutes of the game, got sick to my stomach at the show, and turned it off. If this is going to be the future of the Pro Bowl, let's just vote the players onto the team as an honor, and not even play the game.

You must be a youngster because the conferences have not ALWAYS taken it easy on one another. Back in the day, when players stayed with one team / conference for their entire careers and the AFC was considered an inferior, up start product - they played hard for reasons of pride. Not at full speed but with pride. The mobiility of today's players has broken down the sense of membership in any particular conference since many of the players have played for multiple teams in multiple conferences and are personal friends with players on nearly every team. The league got parity but it lost pride and player/coach loyalty to their franchises.

I believe being a Pro Bowl selection is a great honor. However, there is no real reason or benefit to playing and most of time a large number of players are alternates or additions. Plus playing the week before the Supe Bowl is really lame. Don't play the game and let the guys collect their bonus money.

The only thing of value in the Pro Bowl is to the players themselves: being named as Pro Bowlers. There is no value to the fans unless you are a resident of Honolulu.  Truly, being named as a Pro-Bowler is an honor, or at least should be given the kind of fast-paced, high-risk, contact sport that it is.  The Pro Bowl game itself will never be played in the manner in which the players played during the season in order to get there.  That is the appeal to the public and anything else is an exercise in futility.  The NFL needs to suck it up and stop playing this meaningless, unwatchable and virtually inaccessible game.  The NCAA has it right when choosing their All-Stars or "All-American Team."  The NFL should follow suit.

They should make pro bowl selections , skip the game and just have an award ceremony to raise many for the old timers who didn't make the sic money these guys do. Then you also wouldn't have 18 guys making the team as fill ins and saying thier all pro.
