Jacobs: Burress wanted to play for Giants

BurressBy Josh Katzowitz

INDIANAPOLIS – It’s no secret the Jets team ended its 2011 season in turmoil with Santonio Holmes playing the role of anti-captain, linebacker Bart Scott flipping off reporters and seemingly everybody criticizing Mark Sanchez. And while coach Rex Ryan is intent on fixing his team’s problems, the Jets couldn’t escape the bright lights of Tuesday’s Super Bowl Media Day proceedings.

Though Plaxico Burress, surprisingly, was one of the least-controversial members of the Jets squad this season, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs said Tuesday that Burress didn’t even want to play for the Jets in 2011. In fact, Jacobs said, Burress wanted to return to his old team, the Giants.

"Oh, no question, I know he did,” Jacobs said in quotes recorded by ESPN New York. “I know he wanted to come to the Giants. We just didn't think it was going to be able to be done financially. But he may be (back) next year, who knows?"

After Burress was released from prison, he signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Jets, and he actually performed better than expected, catching 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns in his first action since 2008.

Burress actually visited with the Giants before he signed with the Jets, but they only offered him a guaranteed $1 million. The Jets’ $3 million was fully guaranteed.

But Jacobs also said Burress didn’t want to return to Ryan’s squad next year, because of all the well-documented turmoil that occurred there this season.

"I don't see him back with the Jets next year at all," said Jacobs, who spoke with Burress on the phone recently. "I don't know what he's thinking, but I don't see that. They've got a lot of things going on over there, and I don't know if he wants to be part of that."

Jacobs also added this:

"How many receiving yards did he have last year? How many catches did he have? He's a starting wide receiver -- (45) catches. We got three guys, four guys on our team that have that. He's a much better wide receiver than (45) catches, I tell you that."

But before we start celebrating Burress’ eventual return to the Giants, let’s not forget what he told Men’s Journal before the season began about coach Tom Coughlin.

"After my situation happened, I turned on the TV, and the first words out his mouth was 'sad and disappointing,'" Burress said. "I'm like, forget support -- how about some concern? I did just have a bullet in my leg. And then I sat in his office, and he pushed back his chair and goes, 'I'm glad you didn’t kill anybody!' Man, we're paid too much to be treated like kids. He doesn't realize that we’re grown men and actually have kids of our own."

So, a reunion with Coughlin might be somewhat awkward, eh?

Jacobs: Burress wanted to play for Giants

Plaxico wanted to go where the money was pure and simple....Jacobs (another noted "brain surgeon") is dreaming that Plaxico really wanted to come back with the Giants. There was no loyalty there.  It was about $$$.

Does anyone remember how much he fought to get a bigger contract with the Giants?  How the Giants gave in (very out of character) and gave it to him?  He was still whiney after that and then shoots himself.

I think that Coughlin and the Giants would have been crazy to take him back.  And we may never have learned how great Cruz is.....Good move Giants!

It really tells you something, by the way, about how a player is discarded by classy franchises like the Steelers and Giants.  Plax was great.....and if he was a good guy who kept his mouth shut and stayed out of trouble he would have made the money he wanted, had a long career and.....I think he would have been bound for the HOF.  Not now.  What a shame.

Why in the hell would the Giants want him back with Cruz, Manningham and Nicks on the payroll. Is there really a need? I think they'd prefer to have a health Steve Smith back before Plaxico. Plaxico had it all, great team, great contract, great QB (really great compared to Sanchez) before he shot his career in the foot (or crotch, wherever the bullet landed).

Also real easy to say he preferred the Giants now that they are in the Superbowl.  Bet he would have preferred the Jets if they were in and the Giants were not.

Yeah, he struggled getting off the line of scrimmage.  Sanchez didn't help either with those lazy throws of his.

Who wouldn't want to play with Eli over Sanchez?  As a bonus, he would have avoided Fat Rex too!

Burress wanted the Giants..but the Giants really did not want Burress.  The fact is that now that Cruz has came on the Giants have two #1 WEs and one #2 WR in Manningham.  Probably the best WRs in the NFL.   An old Burress would not have halped at all.

Most of Burress TDs were short passes, he had trouble getting separation.  At 35 next season I don`t see a whole lot of interest in the aging ex-con.

Grown adults don't run around shooting themselves in the leg. I'm all for gun ownership, it's a Constitutional right, but Burress rather showed why NY and NJ are very restrictive with it. I'd much rather live in an area with smarter people who own guns and are spread out. NY/NJ is just too packed in.

People over use the concept of wanting support.  I'm a believer in supporting your family, friends, employees as people... But you can't support certain actions.  To be a real leader, you have to be able to show disgust over bad behavior rather than support it.  Please Plax, don't have a gun on you which you are legally not allowed to have, be dumb enough to put it in your pocket with no safety on, and shoot yourself in a public place, then ask for support. Life doesn't, and shouldn't work that way.  It's also awfully hard to treat somebody as a grown person when they act like children. I'm glad he's doing well know, and think it was a harsh sentence he had to serve for his stupidity, but please don't play the victim here.

Ah!  That explains carrying an illegal loaded handgun in the waistband of your sweatpants.. because you're a grown man..

I'm sorry.. I'm a Giants fan, and I loved what he did for the team in 2007, but things like this make you really understand why he's been called one of the stupidest people to ever play pro sports.
