Goodell: If NFL expands, it'll add two more teams

GoodellBy Josh Katzowitz

It’s no secret the NFL wants to expand to Los Angeles. And while so much of the attention has been focused on which franchise would relocate to L.A. -- whether it’s the Chargers, Vikings, Jaguars or Rams -- we haven’t discussed much the possibility of the NFL expanding.

Apparently, that’s an option.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday on Costas Live on the NBC Sports Network that if the league places a team in L.A., the NFL probably would add two more franchises to make it an even 34.

Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams” and “we probably don’t want to go to 33” if the NFL decides expansion is a good choice.

The last time the NFL added an expansion team was the Texans in 2002 to move from 31 teams to 32. Goodell told Bob Costas that there is no timetable for putting a team back in L.A. for the first time since the Rams left for St. Louis and the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1994.

The league is missing a good bet in Tucson.  We don't have a REAL nfl team in Arizona, and could pull from all of northern Mexico

Please tell me you are kidding about expansion.  The league already does not have enough NFL caliber players to fill all the rosters, now they want to dilute the league even more?  If the fans in L.A. wanted a team and would support one, don't you think they would still have a team in L.A.?  What does it say about the fans in L.A. if the last team that was there left for St. Louis.  Please no more teams in the league, 32 is already too many.  I would rather see 24 good teams with talent up and down their rosters than 34 teams with players who would not even make most teams practice squad.

"an even 34"...

good bye divisional football.  an "even" 34, split into conferences goes to 17 teams, which is a prime number.  you can't evenly divide it anymore.  If the NFL wants to add teams and keep it's competitive balance that it has enjoyed for the past 10 seasons (including this one), they'll need to add at least 3 teams, do away with conferences and have 7 5-team divisions...or 5 7-team divisions.  Simple math.  Unless of course they want to do what they did from '99-2001 and just have the one extra weak team in a division that is usually mediocre after the 1st team and sometimes the 2nd.

Adding 1 more team will throw things out of whack of one of the most percect competitively balanced and scheduled leagues there is.

Posting strictly from the point of view of a fan, I would love to see an expansion team in London. Don't know how the drafted players would feel about that, though. If soccer is making inroads in America, why not try to make our style of football more popular in Europe? I think it is worth a try and you know the NFL has interest in that possibility with all the preseason game that have been played there.

i would say long term Jacksonville is a much more viable market than Buffalo. Buffalo already has to farm out some of their games to Tornonto .

@SNACKS33  You need to get your information right. There's already a hand shake deal in place between the League, Mr Wilson and the Rogers Corporation.Wilson wants the team to stay in the Buffalo area for his fans.Rogers has the last bid and even if they out bid whoever by $1 the team is Torontos.History lesson. In the 80's the CFL was in such a bad situation the NFL helped fund it to keep it going. The CFLs history of producing NFL stars runs deep.Bud Grant, Joe Theisman, Doug Flutie, Brandon Browner etc etc etc!The CFL will be conpensated by the NFL and will generate such an interest from young people, that tryouts for high school teams will triple(look at all the Canadians playing in MLB since the Jays won the World Series) and the college game will get better and lead to a larger pool of players for the NFL.So look forward to hearing(Buffalo like Clevland will keep its name) THE TONTOS WIN THE SUPER BOWL, THE TONTOS WIN THE SUPER BOWL!

In addition to Los Angeles, San Antonio, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Oklahoma City would be good locations.
