Goodell: If NFL expands, it'll add two more teams

It’s no secret the NFL wants to expand to Los Angeles. And while so much of the attention has been focused on which franchise would relocate to L.A. -- whether it’s the Chargers, Vikings, Jaguars or Rams -- we haven’t discussed much the possibility of the NFL expanding.

Apparently, that’s an option.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday on Costas Live on the NBC Sports Network that if the league places a team in L.A., the NFL probably would add two more franchises to make it an even 34.

Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams” and “we probably don’t want to go to 33” if the NFL decides expansion is a good choice.

The last time the NFL added an expansion team was the Texans in 2002 to move from 31 teams to 32. Goodell told Bob Costas that there is no timetable for putting a team back in L.A. for the first time since the Rams left for St. Louis and the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1994.

Besides all that ... 32 teams - 2 conferences of 16 each w/ 4 divisions of 4 teams each is mathematical perfection!!  Leave it be ... see what teams might want to relocate ... start w/ talks w/ the Raiders as their deal of going to LA way back when was the promise of a new stadium ... which the city has now allotted a location AND the $$$ to build it.  I'd say they deserve 1st dibs!  My 2 cents worth!

Aren't there teams failing because of poor fan bases and poor attendance?  Why in the world would they expand.  Goodell is trying too hard to make a legacy of himself.  He needs to just let the NFL go the way it is.  Too much changing will hurt it.

In addition to LA, I'm thinking Portland OR would likely be the other logical place to add if they decide to expand. Too much gambling/temptation/curruption in Vegas and not enough fans or money in Memhpis or OK city.

Goodell: If NFL expands, it'll add two more teams

There have been some pretty smart people who have analyzed US cities as sports markets and have determined sport-by-sport whether they have the demographics to support a franchise. One easily accessible one is from (

SportsChart.pdf). Cities that at least look on paper like the strongest potential candidates for the NFL are Austin; Birmingham; Bridgeport-Stamford or Hartford or New Haven, CT; Honolulu; Las Vegas; Louisville; Los Angeles; Montreal; Providence; Richmond; Riverside-San Bernardino, CA; Sacramento; San Jose; and Tulsa. (Portland, San Antonio, and Thousand Oaks, CA are almost as good.) Some NFL markets are oversaturated with pro sports teams (looking at you, San Francisco-Oakland).

If you go throught the list of attractive candidates, you can mark some off the list completely for cultural and political reasons (like Montreal). Some will give the NFL pause because of the cost of doing business there (Honolulu). A number of them are simply very close to existing markets, and there's little chance that the local owners will approve expansion there (Austin, Richmond, or pretty much any city in New England). I'd say that all things considered, the best expansion candidate to pair with Los Angeles would be either Las Vegas, Riverside, or Birmingham. Some other cities would come into play if there is a relocation some day.

That's my back of the envelope brainstorming. ;)

Ugh.. The NFL is right where in needs to be with 32 teams. If you go to 34, eventually you're going to want to expand to 40 to give all of the divisions 5 teams.. Bad idea.

Munich... Munich didn't even get an NFL Europe team. Doubt they'd be on the NFL's radar. London and only London probably is any time soon. Berlin maybe. They had a decent following when they had a team. Not going to happen either way. They would never get the support from enough owners to make it happen. Not to mention, unbalanced schedules galore. 36 is the only way to go and then re-align again to 6 6-team divisions.

Send the Rams back to LA. Then they actually make sense in the NFC West with Arizona, Seattle, and San Francisco and we can pretend the last ~20 years didn't happen. Win!

Ok, first of all....get all the ideas out of your heads about Toronto getting a team. Too many legal issues with the CFL and their leases and contracts. If you think the CFL will let the NFL infringe on their business you're crazy..lawsuits will be filed and it'll take billions of dollars and years of recourse to get a team there. Canada...OUT...unless the NFL buys and absorbs the entire league. Next, relocation....seems like the most obvious and speediest way to get a team in LA but it doesn't really affect anything except locale. The final part of all this is Kommandant Goodell's desire to make his permanent place in history by making the NFL global. This will be how it happens...London, Munich or Berlin, Barcelona come first then two here, two there until 48 teams around the globe. Of course it wont happen in my lifetime (im 48) so who really cares?
