Goodell: If NFL expands, it'll add two more teams

GoodellBy Josh Katzowitz

It’s no secret the NFL wants to expand to Los Angeles. And while so much of the attention has been focused on which franchise would relocate to L.A. -- whether it’s the Chargers, Vikings, Jaguars or Rams -- we haven’t discussed much the possibility of the NFL expanding.

Apparently, that’s an option.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday on Costas Live on the NBC Sports Network that if the league places a team in L.A., the NFL probably would add two more franchises to make it an even 34.

Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams” and “we probably don’t want to go to 33” if the NFL decides expansion is a good choice.

The last time the NFL added an expansion team was the Texans in 2002 to move from 31 teams to 32. Goodell told Bob Costas that there is no timetable for putting a team back in L.A. for the first time since the Rams left for St. Louis and the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1994.

Goodell: If NFL expands, it'll add two more teams

Why would Los Angeles want to add a team?  Currently we get three televised games on Sunday afternoon.  If the NFL puts in a team here, the NFL TV rules for the home team would apply which reduces the number of games from three to two, because no game can be televised in the same timeslot on the other network.

I think LA should maintain the fight to keep a team out unless the league changes its TV rules.  When the Rams and Raiders were here, we only saw Rams and Raiders games unless one of them played on MNF.

The NFL is perfect as it is and there is no reason to fix something that is not broken.  If the league really believes it is important to have games here, it should use LA as a neutral site instead of having teams endure the 10,000 mile round trip flights to London.

There are a lot of places to put a team. OKCity would be great choice... possibly Toronto as well. More the merrier. I cant wait to go to see the Erie Lakers play some NFL..lol but a few more teams would work do not know about 6 more.

How stupid is that? What conference, division, and scheduling? In this case, more is not better. Almost as ridiculous as thinking about playing the Super Bowl in the U.K. We have a good thing. Don't screw it up Roger or the powers that be. I'm with you YankeeH8r.

I think that it would not stretch the talent to thin. There are a lot of guys out there who don't get a fair shot because of someone who are at the end of a long career and are just living off of their name (M. Strahan said Justin Tuck was better then him). And even new teams will be good in new markets and wont just be push overs. The Texans remember did beat the Cowboys in their first regular season game.

The only other place to add an NFL team besides L.A. is in Dover, Delaware. It's the only logical choice!

Unless, of course, you wanted to consider Las Vegas, or Honolulu, or San Jose, or Orlando, or Salt Lake City...I'm guessing they want a team in London, though.

LA and .... Portland?  San Antonio?  Oaklahoma City?  Memphis?  a third team in NY?  Birmingham? where?    - the big problem that it would make is that it would eliminate the "alternative" city for an owner to threaten to move to if they were bargining for a new stadium!

How many times does an NFL team need to leave LA before Goodell realizes that maybe LA does not DESERVE a new team there anytime int he near future.  Open up some other areas of the US to NFL teams.

34 teams? That's ridiculous. Let's water down the league some more why don't we?
