Belichick: Gronk hasn't experienced setbacks

Gronk got a question or two about his ankle Thursday. (Will Brinson, CBSSports.com)

By Josh Katzowitz

INDIANAPOLIS -- Another day, another couple of questions about the status of Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. After Gronkowski was limited in Thursday’s practice -- the big news, of course, being that Gronkowski and his high ankle sprain actually did practice --coach Bill Belichick said Friday morning that he didn’t have setbacks and that he “was OK this morning.”

Considering Gronkowski participated in drills for the first time since his ankle injury in the AFC championship game and came away feeling fine is obviously good news for New England. The fact he didn’t have any negative effects this morning is even better news. The next step: practicing again today and, again, not experiencing any setbacks.

“Rob has worked extremely hard,” Belichick said. “He’s been in treatment morning, noon and night. Hopefully he continue to progress. He’s coming along, and he’s moving in the right direction.”

Asked to elaborate on what exactly Gronkowski did at practice, Belichick said, “He was limited. He did some of the things that we did in practice, but not all of them.”

Then, a deadpan: “Is that what you were looking for?”

Gronkowski was slightly more verbose after Thursday’s practice.

"It's definitely huge, significant," Gronkowski said. "Obviously I want to get out there, I want to get some practice in before the Super Bowl. I want to do as much as possible, whatever I can do before the game. We'll see how I am feeling, talk to the training staff, talk to the coaches, put it all together."

Belichick: Gronk hasn't experienced setbacks

Let us all stop talking about one person or out coaching there all professionals, i am a Patriot fan and deep in my heart i want them to win w/o saying but bottom line is if you cant stop Manning with his wide recievers it could be a blow out i seen it with bad teams all year, and the Patriots have not played a team that is very good like the Giants on both sides of the ball, the Giants lost 7 games those are in the past but they've been playing like Superbowl Champs. Brady will have to make quick decisions and if the Giants can read him need i say more. I dont expect a close game, and i wont make a prediction.

Belichick: Gronk hasn't experienced setbacks

No excuses. let's see if Belichik can outcoach Coughlin. It may come down to his ingenuity because their regular season oatsy schedule and bungles by the Ravens got them in.  The Patriots may be the team of eestiny this year- playing all of their opponents on their bad days and having  afew luck pkays that squeeks them by. Certainly, the 2011 Patrots are not even clowe to the 2007 Patriots with the exception of the tight end position. New York, on the other hand, looks to be stronger on most fronts relative to their competition this year comoared to the 2007 NYG

I haven't checked the point spread today (I believe its -3 Pats) but I wouldn't be surprised if wagering has been changing daily based on Gronkowski's health and likeiness of playing Sunday, whether at 100% or not. Considering this is THE biggest sports event for the betting community outside of March Madness, his health is a key to the game. Just look at how much media attention it has received. Has any othe player been discussed more than Gronk? Bettors like offense, not defense. A healthy Gronk on the field could mean another 3-10 pts from the Pats. This from a Fox sports artice yesterday on Super Bowl odds - "Everyone loves to bet the favorite and likes to see a lot of points,” said Jay Rood, vice president of operations for the race and sports book at MGM Resorts International."

Belichick: Gronk hasn't experienced setbacks

Gronkowski is all of 22 years old and I'm sure in exceptional shape. The fact he has been off the ankle for nearly two weeks will lead me to believe he's healing up just fine. THis guy was so imstrumental in the success of the Patriots ( and my Fantasy team ) that there is NO WAY he doesn't take the field. If he isn't at full strength he will still need to be covered. With that said the guy nobody is talking about is Aaron Hernandez. He could be in store for a MONSTER game a la Gronkowski all season. I am looking forward to a great competetive game that I have no rooting interest in other than being a football fan. Have a good weekend everyone. Be safe out there and enjoy the game.

I said the same thing about Ed Reed when he was helped off the field after the divisional game with a rolled ankle. Couldn't even walk on it.

He was not only playing the following week, you'd never even know he was in pain.

Didn't he come back into the game like two plays later as well?
