INDIANAPOLIS -- While much has been made of Bill Belichick’s seemingly happy mood since the Patriots arrived here for Super Bowl XLVI, at least one of his former players has to be mighty upset with him tonight.

Latest from the Super Bowl
That’d be wide receiver Tiquan Underwood, who was released from the squad about 24 hours (!) before New England faces the Giants at Lucas Oil Stadium. In his place, the Patriots have signed rookie defensive end Alex Silvestro to the active roster.

As the Boston Herald points out, Underwood almost surely would receive a Super Bowl ring if the Patriots win and that the move was not disciplinary.

Speculation has centered on the Patriots perhaps wanting an extra defensive linemen to move into the rotation and that, without Underwood in the lineup, Chad Ochocinco most likely will be active for Sunday’s game.

Underwood’s classy reaction, via Twitter? “This Is Nothing But MOTIVATION.... I Been Thru A LOT...But There Are Ppl In This World w/ More Serious Problems So I Cant Hang The Head....Thank You Lord … Good Luck To The New Enland Organization, The Coaches, & All My Teammates... #PatsNation”

But even though the Giants can't claim Underwood via waivers (they couldn't do so until Monday), I honestly love the idea presented by the New York Post’s Bart Hubbuch, who writes “Giants should ... hire him as a "quality control coach" like Josh McDaniels. I'm serious.”

Pats release Underwood day before Super Bowl

The Pats could have opened the roster spot by putting this guy on IR, instead of cutting him the night before the SuperBowl. I understand the reasons around it, but this is low.

RILawman says

Class nothing, this is about winning the biggest game of the year and if Belichick feel that Silvestro will help him more then Underwood then make the move.  I have alot of respect for Underwood and the way he handled the situation but lets face the guy has caught three balls for 30 yards all season.  All you fans of other teams crying about how this is such a classless move, maybe that is the reason why your team is home and the Patriots are not.
The NFL is a business. Look at guys like Chris Johnson, wines like a bitch then holds out until he becomes the highest paid running back in the NFL.  Then what, goes on to have his worst year of his career because he "Got Paid".  There is no doubt Underwood will be taken care of it the Pats win this game but instead of bashing Belichick because one player isn't playing, how about the one that is.  Silvestro spent the year on the practice squad and got promoted how about feeling happy for him.

RLawman i guess that is why you are a Super Star and I am a lowly Rookie.  You hit it right on the head

Being a long time Giant fan I was unhappy the day that George Young decided to give the Giant job to someone other than Bill Belichick.

If you give BB two weeks to prepare for a team  he will find a way to beat them.

I feel bad for Underwood, the guy is a class act.  The reason why it was done, makes sense.  And folks, this is the NFL.  Adding an extra D lineman to add to the rotation IS a good move.

But why not cut that fool Ocho what ever his name is...

I can tell ya most of Pats nation, me included would have applauded that.  Tiquan, thanks for all your contributions this year.  You deserve a ring, and I hope you get one if we win.

Does this mean the Patriots are in the Super Bowl?  I thought Super Bowl was in Indy with Irsay/Manning versus the Giants? Belichick may have UNDER estimated UNDERwood by throwing him UNDER the bus?  That's my UNDERstanding UNDER the circumstances.  This will certainly come UNDER review by NFL and NFLPA :-)
