INDIANAPOLIS -- There are many people in the Patriots organization suffering the pains of losing a Super Bowl right now; Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and Robert Kraft all certainly feel an inordinate amount of pain over the loss. But no one's taking it harder than Wes Welker.

It was Welker who had a shot at closing out the game, but dropped a critical catch on a high-but-catchable pass from Tom Brady.

"It's one of those plays I've made a thousand times," a somber Welker said Sunday. "Just didn't make it."

Take a look at the play. Brady misses the throw. If he hits Welker in stride, it's a touchdown and it's ballgame. But it's still on Welker to make that catch.

"The ball is right there," Welker said when asked if he was looking for it on the other shoulder. "I've just got to make the play. It's a play I've made a thousand times in practice and everything else. It comes to the biggest moment of my life and I don't come up with it. It's discouraging."

Welker even went so far as to say that he held himself personally responsible for the dropped pass. Brady didn't exactly refute him, but he also pointed out how important Welker is to the team.

"Wes was running down the field and it looked like they messed the coverage up a little bit and I threw it to him," Brad said. "He went up to try and make it, as he always does, and we just couldn't connect. He's a hell of a player. I'll keep throwing the ball to him for as long as I possibly can. He's a phenomenal player and teammate and I love the guy."

Bill Belichick echoed that sentiment, shrugging off any potential for making Welker the goat.

"I didn't get a real good look on it," Belichick said. "I'm sure he did his best. He's caught a lot of passes for us."

Belichick's right, because the Patriots don't make the Super Bowl in either 2007 or 2011 without Welker. He has been their most consistent offensive threat for the past five years, catching 554 balls for 6,105 yards and 31 touchdowns in that time.

That he could suddenly become a goat for the Pats because he dropped one catch isn't realistic. Just don't try telling him that.

Adolescents sure build up a lot of angst and hate, don't they steelpit45? LOL. No worries. In a few years you'll calm down and be able to respond like a rational person.

Welker did not lose this game. What about the guy who threw the ball to no one from his own endzone ? Oh, I forgot it's a federal crime to say anything against the football God himself. His wife knows who lost this game (why all the spin after the game to cover her husband's arse ?) What about the play calling that allowed a NY fumble to be overturned with 12 men on the field ? Notice that none of them were trying to run off the field when it was called. Maybe in future games there will be a special rule for N.E. (like the tuck rule) that allows the Pats to field up 14 players. The Pats played a sloppy game and the Giants did just enough to squeak by. Welker was the only reason that the Patriots were in Indy to begin with . The blame starts and ends with T.B. and B.B

That ball was very catchable. Welker had both hands on it. He knows he should have had it. If he catches that ball, it's likely the Pats win the game. OTOH, the Pats would not have gotten to the SB without Welker's contributions. He caught a lot of balls for a lot of yards and had some amazing catches throughout this past season.

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

Yes, Welker usually makes that catch but call it like it is. Bad pass. Hernandez had the only "real" drop and Brady missed Welker and Branch on a few throws and he made 2 HUGE mistakes in the safety and the underthrow INT to Gronk. Tom Brady was the reason the Pats lost. Even their defense played well enough to win. Not a hater, just stating what game I watched.

The Patriots lost the game.  It doesn't fall on on player.  Welker should have made the catch but he didnt.  Our offensive line should have played better.  Brady was not as sharp as he normally is.  Give credit to the Giants for making the plays when they had to.  No one should ever question if Eli Manning is an elite quarterback ever again.  This one hurts, but the truth is that our defense must get better.  I would imagine Belichick is taking today off, but will be doing early scouting as early as tomorrow for help in that secondary.

Good job Giants...got us again.  Giants are starting to annoy me. lol

That's a poor statement by Brady.  He'll keep throwing to Welker?!  How compassionate!  Welker has personally added percentage points to Brady's completions numbers.  Brady clearly saw a hole in the coverage, got overzealous and didn't put the ball on target.  Catchable?  Yes, but not a sure thing especially in light of the situation.

Dude you are such a tool.  That was a great game.  Why do people feel the need to rag on a guy ot the other team after they win?  If you are a true Giants fan enjoy the win it is a good moment for you.  But after a few days no one will care but you until next year.  Both teams played great.  Now it is another long wait til the season comes again.  And you are just another douche bag that no one cares about.  But hey I am sure your friends think you are cool.  Hold on to that.  Its probably all you have.
