INDIANAPOLIS -- There are many people in the Patriots organization suffering the pains of losing a Super Bowl right now; Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and Robert Kraft all certainly feel an inordinate amount of pain over the loss. But no one's taking it harder than Wes Welker.

It was Welker who had a shot at closing out the game, but dropped a critical catch on a high-but-catchable pass from Tom Brady.

"It's one of those plays I've made a thousand times," a somber Welker said Sunday. "Just didn't make it."

Take a look at the play. Brady misses the throw. If he hits Welker in stride, it's a touchdown and it's ballgame. But it's still on Welker to make that catch.

"The ball is right there," Welker said when asked if he was looking for it on the other shoulder. "I've just got to make the play. It's a play I've made a thousand times in practice and everything else. It comes to the biggest moment of my life and I don't come up with it. It's discouraging."

Welker even went so far as to say that he held himself personally responsible for the dropped pass. Brady didn't exactly refute him, but he also pointed out how important Welker is to the team.

"Wes was running down the field and it looked like they messed the coverage up a little bit and I threw it to him," Brad said. "He went up to try and make it, as he always does, and we just couldn't connect. He's a hell of a player. I'll keep throwing the ball to him for as long as I possibly can. He's a phenomenal player and teammate and I love the guy."

Bill Belichick echoed that sentiment, shrugging off any potential for making Welker the goat.

"I didn't get a real good look on it," Belichick said. "I'm sure he did his best. He's caught a lot of passes for us."

Belichick's right, because the Patriots don't make the Super Bowl in either 2007 or 2011 without Welker. He has been their most consistent offensive threat for the past five years, catching 554 balls for 6,105 yards and 31 touchdowns in that time.

That he could suddenly become a goat for the Pats because he dropped one catch isn't realistic. Just don't try telling him that.

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

man, Im sure welker is just sick. unfortunately that is a play he'll remember for the rest of his life. Nightmare material right there. Is he the goat? no way BUT that was as big a moment as they come. I was simply shocked he dropped that pass. After that play you jist knew Eli would get it back and seal the deal. all they needed was a fg to win it and the g men had been moving the ball all night. Great game an da hell of a heart breaker for Wes.

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

I'm certainly not a Partiots fan by any stretch, but WW didn't lose this game, it was a team loss. Wes, you're human man. You've won more games for them with your phenominal YAC's... live, learn, move on.

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

It's all the mustache's fault.  If he doesn't have that ridiculous mustache, he makes the catch.  The curse of the mustache.  If Flaco would have shaved his crazy stache, the Patriots wouldn't have even been in the Super Bowl.  Whichever team has a player with a more ridiculous mustache ALWAYS loses.  Stop the bad staches.

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

there is no way it;s a td for sure but when it;s 1 and 10 from the twetny cuz yes the giants were going to make the tackle cuz if you forget he jumped and as soon as he went to catch he fell too the ground so your good angle stuff you can joke on it cuz i know everybody hate NE, but after that im betting the pats would have scored cuz lets not forget how the giants fumbled three times only to recover two and have the one that should of been a tournover negated because of a dumb pats penalty. sports is a gmae of inchesand the superbowl is the hardest of championships to even get to in the sports so brady and bellichick along with wleker gronk, hernadez, wilfork chung anderson and alll of are team will be even hungrieer next year, you guys all think were headed downhill now, i think the opposite this is what we need after spygate i'll admit we diserved bad karma, but you people act like teams werent doing this for years, come the fuck on guys the pats were just the first team to get caught and after coming close now the last two years and closer each year we will take all that hurt and all that lost pride bring it to the practice feild and be a team on a mission .you dont think our players are going to hear the talk and want to prove you guys wrong so bad ,who think we could only win by cheeting think again, cand dont be surprised if you see New Enland play with alot more heart and fire th,an they usually do cause i head a comment, they are bullies, they are one of the teams who dont dance when they score dont call out other pkayers or get involved in trash talk they are a class organization with class players, so you guys can hate but the good lord knows who tries the hardest and he and myra kraft will lead us on tho bigger and better things, you have to learn how to lose before you can win and brady won before losing so now in order to win again he has to feel that pain of what it;s like to be so close and lose on the last plays of the game twice, so for you guys who think the dynasty is done, keep thinking that and we'll talk this timme next year. you name me how many players have three t=rings and then tell me the lagacy is hurt. the only that hurts brady bellichick and the rest of these warrior pats is the fact they now lost two s BOwls on the last drive that hurts not this legacy crap, we know that a new year is on the horrizon and i gaurentee if brady stays healthy his lost sleep and pain of losing two big games now will haunt him till he steps back on that practice feild and if i know tom andf bill this will only make them work even harder and hard work breeds success so you guys might want to rethink this garbage your talking about how  that there is no legacy. cuz another season  brings another shot at winning the big game which means the pats have just as good of a chance to regain the respect around the league as they do to lose it, so like a good sports fan ill wait and see without making any predictions, at ,all except for one, this loss makes the pats even hungrier and if you guys keep trtash talking you might want to be carefull of what you wish for, I love my team and as mush as it hurts to read are your assholish comments and disrespect to a class organization like the pats I will forever remember how the giants won this game and for the media it wasn;t all eli like you always make it out tyo be

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

I love hearing how "lucky" the Giants are and the worst champions. I guess they were lucky DOMINATING the Falcons, then going to play the 15-1 league MVP lead Rodgers IN Green Bay to beat them thouroughly then go to San Fran and beat them in a real close contest only to limit Brady to 17 points while just getting it done is lucky. Well if they are the worst champion in history how bad are the Pats? If it wasnt for a missed field goal or a non-chalant pass catch the Pats wouldnt have even made it. Hey PATS fans do the right thing and just say congratulations.
Also, Welker is such a class act. That wouldve been a highlight catch if he made it. I love an athlete who looks inthe mirror and thinks they couldve done more. That is what makes great!

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

Welker's a pro.  He didn't get where he is by making excuses.  He knows he could have cost his team the game by not making the catch.  The Giants got lucky again.  They put the ball on the ground four times and never had to pay for it once.  The only time they should have, yet another Patriots mistake bailed them out with a 12 man on the field penalty.

Really, all hype aside, this was one of the worst Super Bowls in history, and the Giants are one of the worst "champions" in history.  I'm happy for Tom Coughlin, because maybe now he will get the respect he deserves, and it was great to see Mario Manningham justify his position on the roster, but this year's Super Bowl fell far short of being the "showcase" it is supposed to be.

Put the blame on Brady, Welker, Branch, and wihichever guy wasn't supposed to be on the field when the Pats recovered a Giants fumble.  And ask the "football gods" why on earth they allowed the Giants to put the ball on the ground so often and never pay for it once.
There is one main question here: Do the Patriots have enough horses to help Brady bring home one more Super Bowl, or are they getting ready to blow it up and start over?

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

Even if he catches it and the Giants hold them to a FG, then its 20-15.  And Eli would have driven them down the field, final TD drive, and either a 21-20 or 22-20 game.  GIANTS STILL WIN if they hold them to a FG

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

Wes makes that catch the game is over.  He had to make an adjustment because of the throw but it hit him in the hands.  As a wr if the ball hits your hands you have to make that catch.  With that said he didn't lose the game for us either.  Wes has the most receptions in the nfl this year and without him we aren't even in the Superbowl.  You win as a team you lose as a team.  As bad as the Patriots played they were still winning until 1 minuite left in the game.  The ball just bounced the Giants way.  They recovered their own fumble and Brady gives up a saftey on the 1st play then after getting the ball on the 50 yard line Brady throws a pick downfield.  That turnover cost the Patriots.  All the Patriots had to do was keep the clock running and the Giants wouldn't have had time to come back.Cool

Welker takes Super Bowl loss the hardest

"How would that have been a TD? There were plenty of Giants defenders with good angles around him. It's not like Welker is really fast, he runs great routes and has great timing, but he's not going to just outrun everyone when he gets the ball. Another dumb article from the peanut gallery."

It may or may not have been a TD, but it likely would have won the game since it would have been a first down and allow the Pats to run down the clock.
