INDIANAPOLIS -- There are many people in the Patriots organization suffering the pains of losing a Super Bowl right now; Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and Robert Kraft all certainly feel an inordinate amount of pain over the loss. But no one's taking it harder than Wes Welker.

It was Welker who had a shot at closing out the game, but dropped a critical catch on a high-but-catchable pass from Tom Brady.

"It's one of those plays I've made a thousand times," a somber Welker said Sunday. "Just didn't make it."

Take a look at the play. Brady misses the throw. If he hits Welker in stride, it's a touchdown and it's ballgame. But it's still on Welker to make that catch.

"The ball is right there," Welker said when asked if he was looking for it on the other shoulder. "I've just got to make the play. It's a play I've made a thousand times in practice and everything else. It comes to the biggest moment of my life and I don't come up with it. It's discouraging."

Welker even went so far as to say that he held himself personally responsible for the dropped pass. Brady didn't exactly refute him, but he also pointed out how important Welker is to the team.

"Wes was running down the field and it looked like they messed the coverage up a little bit and I threw it to him," Brad said. "He went up to try and make it, as he always does, and we just couldn't connect. He's a hell of a player. I'll keep throwing the ball to him for as long as I possibly can. He's a phenomenal player and teammate and I love the guy."

Bill Belichick echoed that sentiment, shrugging off any potential for making Welker the goat.

"I didn't get a real good look on it," Belichick said. "I'm sure he did his best. He's caught a lot of passes for us."

Belichick's right, because the Patriots don't make the Super Bowl in either 2007 or 2011 without Welker. He has been their most consistent offensive threat for the past five years, catching 554 balls for 6,105 yards and 31 touchdowns in that time.

That he could suddenly become a goat for the Pats because he dropped one catch isn't realistic. Just don't try telling him that.

"The pats need to find an outside threat to go with the two tights and welker."

Pats are a class act especially after a very tough loss.

Impressed by their comments and have new found respect for them.

Can't win them all.

Anyone else ready to man up?
Who held when the NYG could have driven in for a huge lead in the first half?

Bradshaw??? Not only did you not stop at the one... you fumbled earlier at your own 10.. You were a healthy Gronk away from the biggest goat in NFL history.

Gronk? Waving at your QB it's mine... Throw it in the air and letting a MLB intercept.....

Lets give a mancard to Welker.... The others man up!

Welker takes Patriots Super Bowl loss the hardest

Anyone else want to remember how Brady's INT to a linebacker downfield gave the Giants new life? How about that saftey at the start of the game? Think about the final drive where Branch and Hernandez dropped passes as well that hit their hands. This was a team loss. Any assumption that it was soley on Welker is asinine. He was a big reason the Patriots even had a shot to win the game today with Gronk playing on one leg. Lighten up on the guy.

Love welker, but Brady thru pass to outside shoulder away from safety and welker turned toward safety then had to adjust. If welker looks over left shoulder he catches it in stride for a huge play. Possibly game ender. tyrees catch was much more difficult and he made it. Hit him in both hands u gotta catch that. But there were other chances. The pats need to find an outside threat to go with the two tights and welker.

Welker takes Patriots Super Bowl loss the hardest

So let me see if I am understanding this correctly: Tom I can do nothing wrong Brady can make a poor throw, but Welker is the goat because he couldn't come up with the catch. Suppose Welker did make the catch, would he be the hero? NO he would not. Everybody would be creditng Brady. How in the hell is that fair? I don't like the Pats but if you want to blame Welker then maybe you have to think about blaming Brady too.

How would that have been a TD? There were plenty of Giants defenders with good angles around him. It's not like Welker is really fast, he runs great routes and has great timing, but he's not going to just outrun everyone when he gets the ball. Another dumb article from the peanut gallery.

Welker did not lose the game. It is a team sport last time I checked. The defense played tough and got beat on some lucky/executed plays.

It was a good game. I feel the T.E. being injured weighed more on the outcome for the PATS offense. It caused the Giants to pay more attention to Welker. Welker is a beast and will be a beast next year. Good game.
