Pawngo made it rain Butterfingers. (
By Will Brinson

Wes Welker took the Patriots loss harder than anyone else, primarily because he blamed himself for "The Drop" (that's what they're calling it in Boston now, apparently).

So he's probably not going to take a stunt from Pawngo very well: the Denver-based pawn shop company decided to dump thousands of Butterfingers candy bars in Boston's Copley Square with a note.

"Thank you Wes Welker," the note read.

So, yeah, it really makes no sense. We get the "joke," but why are they thanking Welker? Because they got to give away candy? Because the Denver-based Broncos beat the Giants for the Super Bowl? Perhaps it's because their PR firm, 5W Public Relations, was in charge of the stunt and resides in New York?

Maybe that's the logic here, but why wouldn't they sign the note from 5W Public Relations? Did Pawngo authorize this? Why did Pawngo authorize this? It's not like by goofily burning Boston-area sports fans they're going to get any business in New England.

And it's not like New Yorkers, in a rush to appreciate someone being rude, are suddenly only going to do their pawn shopping at Pawngo.

Pawngo CEO Todd Hills released a statement where he said he "thought Boston fans might at least get a laugh out of it."

HaHA! Sigh. Sorry, Todd. Now Pawngo is just "that annoying company who tried to make Boston sports fans mad by giving them free candy." Fortunately they were fined by the city for commercial dumping.

And were it not for Gisele's ridiculous comments, it'd be the single dumbest thing anyone's said/done regarding Welker's drop.

Not quite that easy a catch, dap-perry. He didn't so much screw the pooch as he just failed to make a play. So did not a few Patriots that day. Including Tom, who didn't get a single ball square on target down the stretch. And Branch, even if he did get the make-up. The truth is, a lot of guys made plays for both teams on Sunday, Tom especially. Just not enough of them. It won't haunt anybody more than it will them. Least of all Boston sports fans, who've been living high on the hog for some time now. Hope they don't start acting like Yankees fans, as if God surely meant for their team to win. Or L.A. fans, as if they'd never heard of the Rams. (Or, soon enough, the Lakers.)

I agree that its poor class to continue to dump on Welker with stupid kokes like this. However, Welker did indeed lose the game. If he catches a ball that any high school player could catch, the Pats could have at the very least kicked a FG, made the Giants lose their final timeout, and force Eli to go the full length of the field for a TD with just over a minute left, and no timeouts. If the Pats get one more first down the game is over. If the Pats score a TD the game is over. Is it a 100% a Pats win - No - but it would have made it much more likely. Most Pats fans knew that as soon as they punted the ball to the Giants that the game was over.

Welker didn't lose the game. The media is blowing this up to make a story. The game was well played by both sides. You can talk about a drop, or drops, or missed tackles, or some other bad play that would have changed the outcome of any game. This isn't baseball where a idiot drop doesn't end the 9th inning like it should and the other team hits a homerun on the next bat and wins. The outcome of the game, if Welker catches that ball, is unknown! If you give that to New England, you have to give the Giants back a bad play to make it even. Now where are we? I doubt Boston fans are angry with Welker because he is one of the best recievers in the NFL and has contributed a great amount to the Patriots. IF they are, it shows poor class, and he should move to another team. I high doubt that is the case.

We haven't heard anybody around here call it "the drop" but what we are saying is "what about Branch's drop, Hernandez," well, I think you get  the point.  We're not blaming Welker, at least not in my New England town right down the street from the stadium.<br />PS-I'll never buy another Butterfinger. Serious.

Welker is a great receiver. He's proven that over the last few years and he'll likely reinforce that assessment over the next few years. But he should have caught that pass. He knows it...he's already said, 'the ball was right there...I had both hands on it...It's a catch I've made 1000's of times". That's his assessment. For a HS receiver, it would have been a outstanding catch. For a collegiate receiver, it would have been a very good catch. For a pro receiver, it's more or less routine. It wasn't near as difficult as the one Manningham pulled it. It wasn't even in the same ballpark as the one Gronk caught in the Ravens game. It was on the correct shoulder because the safety was closing from the inside. It was maybe 2-3 feet further outside than optimum, but Welker got both hands on it cleanly and knows he should have had it.

All that said, none of these guys are perfect. Receivers drop easier catches all the time. They drop them when they are on the numbers, right on their hands. Welker did so much this year...the Pats wouldn't have even been in that game, but for his year-long contributions...something Brady pointed out after the game. Welker does not deserve the ridicule.

the throw would have been called 'perfect' if there was a defender shadowing welker.

any completion over a wr's shoulder, thus over the defender, is usually regarded as a great play.

the drop is BS - its the DROPS, hernandez's was an absolute choke and so was branch, i dont care if it was tipped.

Whats the chances of getting Bill Bukner and Wes Welker to come to New York for an Autograph session. I would love to have them both sign a portrait side by side of " The Drop" and the " Squibller" and hang it in my office..

That was not an "easy catch" ....  it was behind him and to the other shoulder ...still he catches that pass most of the time.

It was not a very good pass!!!
