Not breaking news: Michael Vick is an unpopular athlete when it comes to public polling. This has been true since Vick went to jail for dogfighting and it remains true to this day. But it's a bit surprising to see Lions defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh climbing the charts (sliding the chutes?) of the most unpopular athletes in the world.

According to a survey done by Nielson and published by Forbes, Suh checks in as the fourth-least-liked athlete in the world, behind only Vick, Tiger Woods and Plaxico Burress.

Latest NFL News, Notes

It's not entirely shocking that Suh would end up on this list. He's easily recognizable as the second-overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and someone who has a pile of endorsements. He also stepped on an opponent on a nationally-televised Thanksgiving Day game against the Packers and drew a two-game suspension.

He's regarded in some corners as "dirty" and in many places as a "bad boy" of the NFL, regardless of whether or not that's accurate. According to Forbes, Suh's lack of popularity is a total 180-degree turn, as he was on the list of most popular athletes just four months ago.

"He went from being so popular to being a pariah in one season," says Stephen Master, VP of Sports for Nielson.

Fortunately for Suh, an incident-free 2012 will go a long way towards cleaning up his image. Guys like Plaxico and Vick, who served actual prison time, as well as Tiger, who suffered through a public infidelity scandal the likes of which we've never seen, have a much higher hill to climb if they want to regain their popularity among the general populace.

Dropping out of the top-10 most-hated list from the NFL this time around? Al Davis (passed away), Jerry Jones (must have become sympathetic with the Cowboys missing the playoffs?), Ben Roethlisberger (was never actually charged?) and Randy Moss (retired).

The lesson as always? Time heals all wounds. Some times it just takes longer for some people.

Oh, I forgot to put Kobe Bryant on my list.  For everything from throwing his teammates under the bus at every opportunity, such as saying they should trade Bynum for Jason Kidd a few years back, to never taking responsibility for his actions, to being one of the biggest choke artists when his team has faced elimination in history.  Less than 38% shooter in those games and a turnover machine.  One win, when Pau Gasol covered for Byant's disappearance, but a solid reputation as "clutch".  Too funny, when he's folded up like a house of cards when his team every time his needed him most.

73jaglover, why would a bunch of guys who aren't playing be on the list of most disliked athletes?  How far back do you want to go?  Can I include Ty Cobb and Roger Clemens?

Gilbert Arenas is the only one you mentioned who can remotely be called an athlete, and he's still looking for work as far as I know.

Mista P, you don't make one bit of sense.  You ask people which athletes they like or dislike, what are they going to base their opinions on?  The actions of the athletes.  What else is there?  Then you chastise people for disliking someone based on their actions, because after all, guys do dumb things at 25?  So?  People are defined by their actions, and even though I can't figure out why I still like Suh, it's completely understandable and justifiable that the majority don't.

My own NFL list includes:

- Albert Haynesworth, just for being a slug.  I'm over the kick to the eye - I just hate to see a player get paid then quit.
- Michael Vick, for everything since he was a punk in Hampton Roads to becoming the most overrated QB in the NFL in Atlanta, to his criminal history.
- Donte Stallworth.  Probably obvious why.
- Ray Lewis.  Hate that he bothers to pretend that he's not a dirtbag and that people buy it.

Suh doesn't make my list, but I can't explain why.  I hate the Tim Tebow hype machine, but can't find anything I dislike about him personally, so he didn't make my list either.  Plaxico doesn't bother me.  He did something stupid and hurt himself, so I guess justice was served.

Outside the NFL, Javaris Crittendon, for the gun incident with the Wizards and pending murder trial.  Even if he wasn't the trigger man, he's scum.  But I guess he shouldn't count since he's not actually an athlete right now, so outside the NFL, I can't think of anyone I just can't stand.
