By Josh Katzowitz

Late last month, we told you that new Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano reportedly would hire former Browns coach Butch Davis. We called it a good move, because Davis, formerly at the University of Miami before moving to the NFL, could help ease Schiano’s transition from the Rutgers head coaching job to the pros.

NFL Offseason Begins
Now, Foxsports.com is reporting that the Buccaneers hired Davis on Thursday and named him a senior defensive assistant. The Tampa Bay Times, however, writes that the deal is not yet completed.

And what does a senior defensive assistant do? As Alex Marvez writes, “Davis will work closely with new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano and whomever the team ultimately names its defensive coordinator.” The Times also writes the new job could be more of an advisory role for Davis.

Schiano worked as Davis’ defensive coordinator at Miami, so the two obviously have a relationship.

Considering Davis was fired from the University of North Carolina last July, Schiano has provided Davis a nice landing spot to resume his coaching career.

Report: Schiano hires Butch Davis as assistant

No, he was the D-Line coach under Jimmie for 1 SB.  I think he was the DC for 1 SB...  not sure.

Either way, he was also in charge of D-Lines and defense with phenominally talented Miami Hurricane National Title teams and put together someawesome talent and defenses at UNC.

The defense seems to be in good hands w/ Schiano and Davis................

now the offense.........

Report: Schiano hires Butch Davis as assistant

Several reasons for this title:

1.  It leaves the "coordinator" role/title open to grab someone else in a "promotion scenario"
2.  It enables Davis to continue to collect his 2 million + from UNC
3.  If they don't have a "coordinator" they don't have to let anyone talk to the media except the HC.

All speculation courtesy joebucsfan .com

Anyway we look at it:  good hire.  I am sure Davis has had input with Schiano on the assistants they have already hired.

The defense looks to be in good hands.... not sure about the offense.  I really think they had their eye on McNulty and the Cardinals would not let him interview.

Can someone explain that:  I thought the rule was:  if it is a promotion to a coordinator or HC position, the team is supposed to let the person do it?  I guess that is not true

I think this is a great hire. Let's not forget he was the Browns coach in their lone playoff appearance since returning to the league in 1999.

Troy Fleming - need to correct you, he was the DC in only one of their Super Bowl wins (93). He was the defensive line coach on the 92 team and was coaching the Hurricanes during the final SB championship.

Not sure how good of a move this is for the Bucs. Butch Davis has only proven that he can run a shady program, and has never been much of a winner except in Miami. I think the Bucs would have been better off saving their money and hiring someone else.

The Bucaneers hiring Butch Davis as an assistant is probably a good move for them & also a low risk one. They most likely didn't have to lay out major bucks to snag him. Davis is a coach whose main concern right now is simply trying to rehabilitate his image. And, with the severence package he got from UNC, Butch definitely isn't hard up for cash at the moment. Not many NFL teams can say they have an assistant to the defensive coordinator who's had head coaching experience in both the NFL & major college football. And, what undid the last gig Davis had (head coach at UNC) won't be a problem in this job.The obscene financial compensation NFL players routinely receive doesn't break any rules. And, that pesky "making players keep up with their classes" stuff isn't a part of an NFL coaches life either.I'm sure that Davis is happy to get back into coaching, and he's leaving one nice city (Chapel Hill) for another (Tampa). This sounds like a win-win situation for all parties concerned.

I thought the Greg Schiano hire was an attempt to clean up the mess.... Butch Davis creates the mess.

The Bucs have become a team of spoiled kids and criminals, these coaching hires don't inspire confidence that things will change.
