UPDATED 8:21 p.m. ET: According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Steelers sources are saying that no decision has been made regarding Hines Ward and his future.

We already knew big changes were coming to the Steelers, whether Ben Roethlisberger wants it or not. Former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is out; former Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is in as the man who will run Pittsburgh’s offense. And we wonder how much power Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin really has.

Now, it seems like a distinct possibility that one of the organization’s all-time great receivers won’t return for 2012.

That’s according to’s Jason La Canfora, who said Friday that with all the contract and salary cap maneuvering the front office is doing, Ward’s $4 million salary and declining productivity might be too much bear and that he won't be back in Pittsburgh next season.

Already, Ward has said he will not retire and that he’d be willing to take a paycut with the Steelers because he wants to stay in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh's offensive upheaval
"I'd probably have to restructure my contract," Ward said last month. "That's fine with me. I recognize that. I'm telling you I want to be here, I'm telling you I'm willing to do that. And I understand the ramifications -- we have the cap number and stuff, but I want to be here."

Even with his reduced role in the Steelers offense -- Ward lost his starting position to Antonio Brown -- the team means so much to him that he’s willing to return for less money and less playing time.

"I'm just looking year to year, but I do want to play next year,” Ward said. “If they decide to part ways, I'll be devastated, but life's not over. I'm still young.

"My thing is, I want to be a Steeler, I'm here, I'm willing to restructure, do whatever. I don't want to be seen in another uniform but, if they decide to part ways, or whatever, I don't know, I'm not even thinking like that. I couldn't even fathom myself [in another uniform], but I still want to play football.”

Look for something to happen with Ward soon. If he’s still on the Steelers roster on March 1, he’s guaranteed to earn his 2012 salary. It’s seeming more likely, though, that if Ward wants to continue his illustrious career, he’ll have to do so somewhere other than Pittsburgh.

Report: Ward won't return to Steelers in 2012

Bringdanoise another idiot on here. Hines Ward has Six 1,000+ yard seasons and Six 75+ reception seasons, 2 super bowl titles, and the man has put just about every good DB on their ass one time or another. Yeah the last couple seasons he hasnt done too much cause of age but still has been a great asset to the Steelers and most definitely deserves to be in the HOF. BOOM!!

Report: Ward won't return to Steelers in 2012

Name me the first wr that played in the Northeast, with no dome, on a run first team for his first 8 years but has 1,000 catches, the all-time leader in his team's storied history in just about every statistical important WR category there is,  oh and he is considered the BEST blocking WR ever.  Yep, Hines Ward.  Also, Calvin would need to win at least one super bowl and break most of rice's wr records to even have a shot at the HOF.  With the passing fad and the rules relaxed, he should be getting those stats.  Chris Carter was always considered a top 5 WR when he played, where is he now?  Yup, still can't crack the HOF.  Everyone has different opinions about who should make it and who shouldn't.  i don't think Chris Doleman should have made it.  I never considered him "elite" but he did make it.  You use stats as the end all be all to make the HOF.  Where's Kevin Greene?  Isn't he the all-time leader in sacks by a linebacker?  Yep, in fact he is 3rd all time total.  bruce smith and reggie are in front of greene, yet doleman and randle are both in and behind greene.  This is not an attempt to start the Greene for HOF rally but merely to point out the despite playing the same positions, stats aren't always the number one reason to let a player in.  If Calvin never gets to the super bowl but has the best stats ever (ala Marino) then he could get in.  Ward has both the stats and the 2 super bowls to be in the HOF.  You don't have to like it, but you need to acknowledge it...

LMFAO way to delete my post. AGAIN. Pathetic..
Look, Hines has never been elite. Ever. EVER! He has never in his entire career ever been considered one of the 5 best WRs in the league! HOFers should be elite. One of the best at their position when they played. Hines had been good for a long time, and even had a great season or two. But if that is enough to get him into the HOF, then yeah guys like Rod Smith, Eric Moulds and Chad Johnson are gonna have to get looks as well. Each of those guys were good for a while, but were any of them ever considered truly elite? Probly not.. Hines is in the same boat.
Calvin Johnson is an example. This guy has been considered elite for a few seasons, and was the best WR in the league this season HANDS DOWN. If he can put together maybe 7 or 8 more solid seasons he's a HOFer. Calvin Johnson the past 3 seasons > better than Hines has ever been. Hines has good numbers, but he has had so much time to get them. And he's always been part of a good team. Never been one of the best in the NFL = shouldn't be in the HOF.

Niners!!!  He would be great as a a leader and mentor to our young recievers.  Only problem is that Crabtree has too similar of a style.  We need a speedster.

he probably won't  get in because the hall doesn't like recievers any more.  Look at Andre Reed, Chris Carter and Tim Brown in this year election!!!!!

Stats aside, He is one of the best blocking recievers of all time, thus making his team better.  Another reason steelers has been a great running team for so long.  There is more to a position than just stats.  Look at your big nose guards that require doble teams every down.  They don't gat the sacks or credit but they are the reasons why others excel and make the team around them look better.

Report: Ward won't return to Steelers in 2012

Hiney Ward is a showboating tool who got pulled over in the late hours of the night...partying with a lady friend that is NOT his wife...much like what Morgan Freeman did when he got busted up in an accident with a lady "friend". The difference is that Mr. Freeman has talent whereas Ward has none..whatsoever. Having said that the Steelers need Ward back. He is the best receiver on a team with receivers more pathetic than the 49ers. Perhaps Ward will take his "talents" to South another major showboating tool has done.
"A" for trolling effort, but an "F" for trolling talent...
