Roger Goodell recently received a five-year contract extension from the NFL, and according to a report, his salary will "double" up to $20 million annually by the end of the deal.

That news comes from Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, who also reports that Arthur Blank, Falcons owner and head of the NFL's compensation committee, said Goodell's new deal will "bring Goodell in line [financially] with other top sports commissioners."

“If you compare [Goodell] to any of the other commissioners in other sports, we think he would rank very high in that group, and he needs to be compensated on that basis,” Blank said at the Super Bowl.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig made $18.35 million in 2007, per Kaplan, and has since received two contract extensions. It is a logical assumption that Selig is paid more than $20 million annually at this point.

Goodell received $9.89 million in base salary according to federal tax returns filed by the NFL last year. Though we won't know the actual number of Goodell's new base salary until the next time the NFL files its tax returns (which could be as early as Wednesday), it stands to reason that Goodell will see a significant bump in his base, given that he received the extension just a few weeks ago.

And while the response from NFL players on Twitter -- Falcons wide receiver Roddy White wondered "How in the hell can [you] pay a man this much money that cant run tackle or catch" -- hasn't been ideal, it's difficult to get too angry at what Goodell's bringing in.

The NFL successfully navigated a potentially brutal lockout, came away with new television deals and is poised to continue growing exponentially between now and the end of Goodell's newest contract.

Report: Goodell's salary to 'double' up to $20M

Ignore previous post, meant to post the stuff below:

What about CEO's for large world wide corporations that are paid 20 or 30 or even 50 million dollars per year or more?  Maybe we should stop paying them and divide those funds amongst the employees or maybe even that company's clients
Two wrongs don't make a right. So if some CEO is making $50m, then Goodell should make $20? Depends on who the CEO is. If it's Bill Gates, or Larry Ellison, or the late Steve Jobs. I'm OK with that, because the actually BUILT their respective corporations. If its some slob who takes over Pepsi and does nothing appreciable to improve the product or sales, then no, they shouldn't get $50m.

Report: Goodell's salary to 'double' up to $20M

Praising Dick-Tator Goodell is like praising the Emporer who had no clothes. Let's look at some facts, rather than just giving this empty headed dolt credit for growth of the NFL that he has nothing to do with.
1.Goodell is a company man, slob with no original thoughts of his own. There are probably a hundred thousand people in middle management across the country, that could do his job and do it better. He didn't build the NFL like Pete Rozelle. He didn't guide it through tough times like Tagliabue. He just a dolt who took over a smooth running machine.
2. Goodell is simply a spokes-dummy for the owners.  He has a bachelors degree from a liberal arts college, good accomplishment, but for Pete's sake, he's not some kind of financial or entreprenurial genius with an MBA or PHd from Wharton or Stanford or Chicago. He's a cog, company man, lap dog. He is now way, shape or form does what is in the best, long term interests of the league, it's all about what Jerry wants, today!
3. Goodell is the son of a US Senator, he had every advantage in the world, grew up in a bubble so don't give me this bullcrap about him getting to where he is through hard-work, etc, etc. It's all BS. He is where he is because of connections and privelage. If he wasn't the son of a US Senator, he'd probably be the night manager of a fast food joint.
4. While in the short term the NFL is growing, he is seriously mismanaging the biggest issue that threatens the league, player safety and future litigation from players claiming harm. His half-baked, half-ass, biased, wildly inconsistent attempts at trying to do something are useless. And at the same time he makes these half-ass attempts to improve player safety, he advocates for an 18 game season? This man is one insincere, transparent, SOB.

Report: Goodell's salary to 'double' up to $20M

This whole thread reminds me of the guy that works in the mailroom for 3 months and then thinks he can run the company better than the CEO that founded the company and built it from the ground up!!

It's amazing how many idiots post on here bashing Goodell or Stern and their credentials are "Night clerk at local gas station"...Seriously, rather than bashing Goddell why don't some of you freaking idiots post your ideas to make the NFL a better league...And making tickets free is not a good idea!!

Redwings 1969 is 100% correct on every statement.  The fact is, Goodell has earned the pay raise, and earned it in the eyes of his peers.  It doesnt matter what dumb fans or dumb players think.

I also want people to think about this, David Stern, who compared to Rodger Goodell, is a joke of a comish, has been getting paid over 23 million a year for some time now.  Bud Seileg, who is an OK comish, has been getting 18.5mil.  Rodger Goodell runs a sport that finacially, and from tv ratings standpoint, is bigger than both sports COMBINED!!   Yes, he deserves the money. Period.

Disgusting. I almost can't stand anything about sports anymore. Nobody loves any game anymore. It's all about $.

It's always been about the money, that hasn't changed.  I'm guessing you're a fairly young man?  If not, maybe you love sports so much you were naive to the fact money is all that matters and you finally woke up?

Either way, remember something.  It's ALWAYS money first, everything else in the sports world comes second.  That won't change in your lifetime or mine.

Whether you were on the players side or the owner's side when they were negotiating you had to at some point wake up and understand it was all about money for both sides.  They were fighting over 9 BILLION dollars in yearly revenue, soon projected to become 13 or 14 BILLION dollars.

The fans ?  Too bad so sad if we didn't like what was going.... in the end we'll be there, and they know it.

$20 million dollars to oversee the NFL, where are the applications.  Seriously, the teams have salary caps why doesnt the commissioner have a salary cap? That is an absurd amount of  to make in one year. Goodell think of all the starving and homeless people out there that lost everything because of the economy, yet the NFL is paying a man who doesnt even play and entertain people $20 million. WOW this country can be sad and ridiculous at times. Shaking my head.

There are team caps, not much of a cap on a player's salary though.   You're ok with players, sometimes thugs including wife beaters, drunk drivers that kill people, accused rapists, drug dealers and players with ties to gangs in their past being paid crazy money to play a game, but not ok with the guy at the top leading the way being fairly compensated?

What about CEO's for large world wide corporations that are paid 20 or 30 or even 50 million dollars per year or more?  Maybe we should stop paying them and divide those funds amongst the employees or maybe even that company's clients?

Ridiculous thinking... you guys are brutal.  You don't understand a thing....

Report: Goodell's salary to 'double' up to $20M

Unless he invented Fantasy Football, None of this growth can be accredited to him.  In fact he is hurting the game by not changing the way it is refereed.  they need younger guys and more help from the booth like in college.  every play reviewed then stopped if questioned.  And what is with all this offense help?  and overtime rules?  All his FAULT!!!!!

Just when I think I've read the dumbest thing I'm going to read on these boards somebody like you comes along, unbelievable.

Let me spell this out for you in a way even the dumbest people on the planet can understand it.  When any large business on this planet does well,  leaders ( in this case Goodell) get compensated very nicely for their time and efforts.  When a large business fails, profits decrease rapidly and in this case if viewership decreases leaders in most cases lose their jobs or take pay cuts.

The NFL is thriving, it's by far the most popular and profitable sport in North America, thus Goodell gets paid accordingly. Is that so hard for your little puny insect brains to understand?

Second of all not ALL decisions are solely Goodell's doing, he's employed and reports to the owners.  If the owners of these franchises weren't delighted with the job he's doing trust me, he wouldn't still have a job let alone be getting a big raise.

I hope I made myself clear... then again I doubt it.  But, I had to try.

As long as the league continues to grow Goodell will continue to get massive raises, prices will continue to rise and small markets that can't sell out will continue to be blacked out.
