Roger Goodell recently received a five-year contract extension from the NFL, and according to a report, his salary will "double" up to $20 million annually by the end of the deal.

That news comes from Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, who also reports that Arthur Blank, Falcons owner and head of the NFL's compensation committee, said Goodell's new deal will "bring Goodell in line [financially] with other top sports commissioners."

“If you compare [Goodell] to any of the other commissioners in other sports, we think he would rank very high in that group, and he needs to be compensated on that basis,” Blank said at the Super Bowl.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig made $18.35 million in 2007, per Kaplan, and has since received two contract extensions. It is a logical assumption that Selig is paid more than $20 million annually at this point.

Goodell received $9.89 million in base salary according to federal tax returns filed by the NFL last year. Though we won't know the actual number of Goodell's new base salary until the next time the NFL files its tax returns (which could be as early as Wednesday), it stands to reason that Goodell will see a significant bump in his base, given that he received the extension just a few weeks ago.

And while the response from NFL players on Twitter -- Falcons wide receiver Roddy White wondered "How in the hell can [you] pay a man this much money that cant run tackle or catch" -- hasn't been ideal, it's difficult to get too angry at what Goodell's bringing in.

The NFL successfully navigated a potentially brutal lockout, came away with new television deals and is poised to continue growing exponentially between now and the end of Goodell's newest contract.

Whether they need it or not is not the issue. I think athletes are overpaid (and don't even get me started on Goodell) but people are willing to pay to see them and people are willing to pay them these salaries. It's called capitalism and it's the greatest system on earth.
Yep, people don't seem to get that public opinion does not determine financial worth. Actual results do, and the immutable rules of monetary success. You bring in money you get your cut, if you're worth more and someone wants to pay that to you, then that's just what the market sets.

My main problem with the current US system is that isn't the system we actually have in place. We have so many government subsidies and regulations that absolutely trash the free market principle, we don't actually have capitalism. In sports it's kind of there at least. Although the salary cap is a compromise.

It's rediculous how much these athletes and everybody assossiciated with the sport makes.. Does Goodell really need 20 million dollars? Did Michael Vick need his 100 million dollars after one good year.. no, they are all overpaid

What is sad is that he can make $20 million every year and still not be able to afford to buy a football team for at least 20 more years

Hey Roddy, In what world do you live in where it makes sense that guys WHO CAN RUN, TACKLE AND CATCH makes more money than our soldiers, firemen and policemen?  Get a grip dude, and realize that no matter how much you make, you are still and employee and Goodell is still The Man.
Wait, Roger Goodell is also a soldier, fireman and police officer? Hell, he deserves that money then! I had no idea he did so much

Good lord!! As a lowly science teacher, I can't even process this! I realize that Goodell is the CEO of a very sucessful business and deserves to be compensated as such. The issue I have with this is most fans will never be able to afford to attend a real NFL game (even pre-season is out of reach) while this guy gets more money in one year than most people could spend in a lifetime. A better use of that money would be lower ticket prices, do some real research on player health, donate to NFL 60 program or other charities, help with middle/high school programs, or do anything that benefits more than just one man. I love the NFL but feel the fans are being gouged.
