Roger Goodell recently received a five-year contract extension from the NFL, and according to a report, his salary will "double" up to $20 million annually by the end of the deal.

That news comes from Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, who also reports that Arthur Blank, Falcons owner and head of the NFL's compensation committee, said Goodell's new deal will "bring Goodell in line [financially] with other top sports commissioners."

“If you compare [Goodell] to any of the other commissioners in other sports, we think he would rank very high in that group, and he needs to be compensated on that basis,” Blank said at the Super Bowl.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig made $18.35 million in 2007, per Kaplan, and has since received two contract extensions. It is a logical assumption that Selig is paid more than $20 million annually at this point.

Goodell received $9.89 million in base salary according to federal tax returns filed by the NFL last year. Though we won't know the actual number of Goodell's new base salary until the next time the NFL files its tax returns (which could be as early as Wednesday), it stands to reason that Goodell will see a significant bump in his base, given that he received the extension just a few weeks ago.

And while the response from NFL players on Twitter -- Falcons wide receiver Roddy White wondered "How in the hell can [you] pay a man this much money that cant run tackle or catch" -- hasn't been ideal, it's difficult to get too angry at what Goodell's bringing in.

The NFL successfully navigated a potentially brutal lockout, came away with new television deals and is poised to continue growing exponentially between now and the end of Goodell's newest contract.

Neither Goddell, nor Selig, nor any player in either league, nor the NBA, or any sport should be making that much money. There's absolutely no sense in it.

When the states (tax payers) pony up 3/4 of the cost to build a stadium, then they should keep the prices at a respectable level.

Right.  Because building these stadiums and keeping professional sports teams around doesn't do enough for the community.

You act like the taxpayers don't benefit from contributing to these stadiums being built.  I think because of these stadiums a few jobs are created and I'm going to guess a lot of money is pumped into the local economy that otherwise wouldn't be but hey, you're right. The owners owe you......  you guys should email them.

So a guy who ruining the sport of football is getting a raise? He allows cheating, allows the promotion of felons, allows the Patriots to set the rules, allows stupid rule changes, supports stupid rules, is anti-Steeler, is totally unfair and never balanced on discipline. He favors the East coast teams, and is basically about an motivating as a pimple. Do the NFL owners have a clue thta their fan base is eroding? I realize the NFL has great ratings and a great following, but it costs so much to attend a game and the loyaolty of the players is gone due tot he stupid salary cap and Goodell alienating palyers and franchises. This man is a bad leader and an absolutley terrible commissioner. He should be removed from office not promoted. Sad day for the league.

dont think it's a point of wing being a company man i think he is simply explaining reality to you and that is the business of it.

and Dr you dont need to give your fanbase a break... you just create new fans with more$$$  - after all "they are obsessively loyal"!

dont forget this isnt just about the owners making money, there is a HUGE trickledown effect here, right down to the guy letting you park in his front yard for 10bucks. There are a lot of jobs create by the ownership/franchise so i dont think for a second this as a piece of art??

cold hard reality of pro sports and us crazy fans!

You know if they built their own stadiums, then they could charge whatever they want. When the states (tax payers) pony up 3/4 of the cost to build a stadium, then they should keep the prices at a respectable level.

This is hilarious!  The man can't live on $9.89 million a year (in base salary) now?  If his salary goes to 20 million a year then the fans are going to have to pay more for the right to subsidize his 20 million dollar a year lifestyle!

Of course he can live off 9.89 million dollars.  Heck, I'm betting that if he wanted to he can live of 90 thousand dollars because another bet I'm willing to make is 90 percent of the people on these boards aren't making 90 grand but still find a way to live.   That being said he doesn't want to live off 90 grand or 900 grand or 9.89 million dollars, and why shouldn't he take what he can get?  The players do...... players come and go yet the game continues to grow and revenues continue to increase, so why shouldn't the commissioner be fairly compensated?

Do some research and then come back to me.  Try to find many if any companies out there at all that gross 9 billion dollars in a year but don't pay their CEO 20 million dollars.   Do some math for me.   Take 20 million dollars and divide it into 9 billion and see what you get.   One percent of 9 billion is I believe 90 million dollars.  Goodell's top salary in his new agreement is going to be less then 1/4 of one percentage point of today's yearly NFL revenue.   And that's TODAY'S gross.. forget what the NFL will be grossing in a few years.

Redwings 1969 is a company man, through and through.

Everybody gets supply and demand. But at some point you need to give your fan base a break, to keep the fan base. Pushing the envelope until you start losing fans, wouldn't seem like a smart business model either. There needs to be a happy medium.

This has nothing to do with being a company man, it's just common sense.  What you're asking for is insane in my opinion.  What you're saying is it doesn't matter if the demand exceeds the supply, owners in businesses like this should just be nice guys and give their fan base a break?  What?   The "happy medium" you speak of is exactly where the NFL is at right now.  The league is profiting in a big way, they make a fortune.  Fans are going to games in record numbers and TV contracts have never been more lucrative.  That's where your happy medium is...

There is a school of thought out there that people shouldn't  on sports teams.

That's the craziest thing I've ever read in my life, and that says a lot because I've read some pretty crazy stuff on these boards.  It's so crazy I have no further comment on what you just said.... except that it's the craziest thing I've ever read in my life.  WOW.

Public or Jane Doe, all they care about is themselves and their bank account!  Football was started for the little guy, the factory worker, the coal miner, the union guy who even though didn't make a lot of money could go and see a great sporting contest without it costing too much.  NOT ANYMORE!
